Interior Design Sense

Prandina showed off four of their new blown glass pendant lamps at the Light & Building 2012 fair. We had to share them with you because these pendants are something to see. The new lamps are called Tiara, Gong, Bloom and Chorus and they all share a smooth, curved appeal. Tiara is pure elegance, and our favorite. The bottom part of the diffuser has a slightly truncated cone shape upon which a perfectly circular shape sits. Only a line of light separates the seamlessness between these shapes and gives this lamp such charm. Gong is like a cocoon; strong yet delicate encasing something beautiful. In this case, it’s light. Bloom is the mysterious one; providing up and down lighting, this lamp gives off a nice diffused light to enhance the ambiance. Chorus is the one that plays with subtle angles on a cylindrical shape; depending where you view if from, its shape can slightly change on you. Go to Prandina for more details.

If you’ve read MG for a while, you know I’m all about “comfortable glamour.”  Lately I’ve been really drawn the style that made me fall in love with Interior Design years ago “California Casual.”  It’s the anti-furniture store look I embraced eagerly as a young designer/student.  Color, a mix of textures, and a general relaxed feel perfected by Peter Dunham, Schulyer Samperton, and Estee Stanley to name a few.

Clean-lined perfection…realistically I could not live with all the white and zero clutter but I do love to look at it.

I know my favorite styles aren’t exactly polar opposites, but it’s fun to analyze.  Ultimately I’m somewhere in the middle and just buy things I love!

Earlier this past week I attended the Hospitality Design Expo & Conference, a three day event taking place in Las Vegas. It was my first time ever attending, and I definitely think it’s worth a visit!

The show was also presented by Hospitality Design magazine one of my favorite magazines for all things on the latest in design and architecutre for commercial spaces, such as chic hotels, restaurants, and bars.

At the show I saw lots of cool lighting, furnishings, and flooring aplications. While I didn’t have the opportunity to see all that was showcased, I am featuring most everything that I did get to see in a short amount of time. Hopefully, I’ll be back in the future to cover more of the show!

It was neat to see Thomasville and Drexel Heritage at the Hospitality Design Expo as I had just toured the showroom headquarters at High Point Market last month.

Bover lighting, a company out of Spain, had some unique and interesting lighting, much of it with an organic flair.

It was good to see Los Angeles based Modernica had a space at the Hospitality Design Expo.

Also, the salespeople from the Los Angeles La Murrina showroom were at the Hospitality Design Expo definitely going to take them up on their offer to visit the Beverly Boulevard showroom for an espresso!

Newly released from Blu Dot are these colorful powder coated outdoor chairs retailing at just $99 each!I want one in every color!

I haven’t seen the movie, but as I was touring the Hospitality Design Expo with CasaSugar, I was told this chair from Philips Collection was featured in the movie “The Hunger Games.”

From Atlas Carpet Mills are some beautiful patterned carpets.

Kohler had some great bathroom vanities on display in their space at the Hospitality Design Expo.

While in Vegas, I also attended an exclusive luncheon hosted by Messe Frankfurt and had the opportunity to learn and hear about the company (which also happens to be the oldest company in history for putting on trade shows and events). They specialize in design, gift, technology, & more related trade fairs worldwide. Messe Frankfurt is also home to the huge exhibitor center located in Frankfurt, Germany and hosts the popular design show Ambiente. Another design show I hope to attend one day!

Ypsilon turns a solid piece of marble into an unusual and contemporary free standing washbasin called Gem. Staying true to their philosophy of blending tradition and modernity, this washbasin is made of an age old, classic material but with such a unique shape, it becomes current and fresh. The design of the interior of the basin is very intriguing, revealing the creativity and expert Italian craftsmanship behind Gem. We love unique designs such as this Cabrits freestanding bathtub by Victoria + Albert. Inspired by and named after the Cabrits peninsula, the shape of the tub is meant to mirror the distinctive shape of the peninsula. You can’t deny the shape is quite unusual for a tub. But that was the idea behind Cabits, it was meant to stir things up a bit in the freestanding bathtub world. Its shape is not only interesting, organic and beautiful to look at, but has ergonomic qualities that promise comfort and support. The Bjhon washbasin by Agape Design embodies elegance and functionalism alike. It’s no wonder then that the man behind the design is Angelo Mangiarotti, who has been called “a freer and more creative Prouve”. Bjhon is simple and clean yet equally expressive and sculptural.
