Paul Ryan-Goff

22 Jun

My mediocre day of coughs and sneezes, tissues and head colds is made instantly brighter just visiting Paul Ryan-Goff’s stellar portfolio. This über talented UK-based photographer almost paints his images with natural light, composition is clever and he knows just how to capture that daydream we all need. A cosy room. a warm fire, favourite objects and serenity, beautiful, beautiful serenity. So much more after the jump.

Monday’s pets on furniture

21 Jun

If you’d like to send us photos to include in next week’s “pets on furniture” post, please ensure your photos follow our basic rules: First, the pet must be on a piece of furniture. And said piece of furniture must be clearly visible in the photo, so it takes center stage rather than your pet. (Think of it more of a photo of a great piece of furniture that you want to show off…and your pet happens to be sitting on it). And second, the photo must be of decent quality. If it’s dark or fuzzy (from a camera phone) then it may not make the cut. Thanks! (Photos, your name and a brief description can be sent to desiretoinspirekim@hotmail.com and PLEASE don’t send me closeups of your pet!)

Hi, my name is Ana Ferraz, I’m from Brazil and this lovely pet is Bijou, one of my four adopted cats. She is a delicate white princess, an angel with blue vivid eyes. She is so beautiful (I’m a proud mother…rs) that I consider her a essential part of the decoration.

I’m sending you a photo of my cat Sofia Coppola on my retro furniture.
- Johansen (Olomouc, Czech Republic)

Is this furniture??? The Kitty thinks so. She likes to perch here and look out at the garden…… when she’s not lounging on my floor cushions…. or trying to blend into the sofa. It’s a rustic hand carved bench from Bali. Too big for my house really, but I can’t part with it….or the cat! — We found “Kitty” when she was just a kitten. She’s deaf and was stranded on our roof after a typhoon. She’s 10 years old now and fat!

This is Ponyo, on his favourite look-out spot on our tatami mat. Watching the world go by.

Tale of two cities 1 + 2

21 Jun

I’m stalking Melbourne and Sydney. Daydreaming again. (News on my own house search. We signed on a house here in Brisbane only to have it fall over on building and pest … termites … eek! The search goes on again. See what I bought instead on my page.) The first house today is from Prahan in Melbourne. Love the kitchen counter, the ladder and lights. Love the bones of this house, the bathroom vanities and the practical backyard. The second house, after the jump, is in Redfern in Sydney with recycled timbers, a loft bedroom and clever layout for a tiny space. Funky and fun, warm and quirky. The perfect inner city pad. Oh and I decided to add a third house just to even things up in the competition.

Comma:Daylesford

18 Jun

Jane Martino wanted to share a home with our readers that her husband (designer and artist Matt) crafted in Daylesford, Australia, and is available as a vacation rental. It’s about an hour and a quarter from Melbourne, has the most spectacular views and the landscape is heavenly. This 4 bedroom home is set in the country but the interior has modern touches which make this space a perfect blend of old and new. Additional accommodation is available via the “Stables” which houses a four poster bed and freestanding bath; ideal as a luxury wedding suite or intimate couples retreat. (I’m getting married next month – I’ll take it!!!) It’s so perfectly designed – a nice bright white kitchen, a dark and moody sitting room, cozy bedrooms with country touches. If you want more details check out COMMA’s website.

Brian Andriola encore

18 Jun

Beauty is everywhere … the motto of American stylist Brian Andriola.  He gathers and layers and weaves beauty. The ordinary and extraordinary combine. Everyday becomes spectacular.  It’s not just curating, it’s telling a story, creating a dream. Kim first introduced us to Brian’s work in 2008 via his then rep’s site but now Brian has his own website brimming with all things bright and beautiful. Bliss!

Reader request – small bathrooms

17 Jun

Here is request #2 from Jeffrey and Julia of Stamford, CT: “I found your site when trying to come up with ideas for my small but master bathroom. My wife and I have three kids and are stuck with a bathroom that needs gutting and we have no idea where to start with picking colors and textures to do this project (on a dime, too.) The space is approx. 100 inches long and 60 inches wide. The sink and toilet is on the left, just as you enter this rectangle space and we have about 32 inches of shower space where we want to convert into a tub. I am at a total loss for what to do. I just know the shower wall is rotting and needs to come out. That causes me to loose all the other walls, too so it has become a total re-do, therefore leaving me with a blank canvas. All I know is that it needs storage and I want it to be the center piece of our already black wood furnitured-home, with white walls and ceilings, and natural-colored wood parquet floors. Ugh. So I write you in desperation for inspiration for something to do with our (god-awful) space and need for our simple family of five.” Yikes. That is quite a small bathroom, and a master at that. I personally would try and leave the shower instead of a tub because a shower will save space (plus how do you fit a tub in 32″?). Here are some very small bathrooms that I hope can provide you with some ideas on where to go with your teeny tiny space.

Reader request – masculine bathrooms

17 Jun

Time for another reader request. This time I thought I’d get through 2 of them since I noticed a couple in my list had to do with bathrooms. The first comes from Sandro, who says he’s renovating his bathroom and is struggling to find a very masculine look. Now this post is a bit subjective as some people may wonder what makes a bathroom “masculine”..a lack of pink perhaps? So here is my interpretation of what I think could be categorized as masculine bathrooms. (Stay tuned for request #2)

Wendi Young

17 Jun

It’s in the details you know. Details lift an average space into something special. Icing on the cake is the cliché I believe. Wendi Young creates homes with an understated elegance, classic but not contrived and always with the well considered detail. It looks effortless but of course it is not.  Her beautiful outdoor spaces have me dreaming of summer in the chill of a southern hemisphere winter.  Don’t miss the shoe-a-holic’s idea of heaven after the jump.
