Interior Design Sense

A good photo isn’t just a frame of film. It’s a frame of mind. A photographer is a weaver of dreams, a story teller, the fairy godmother with a bag full of wishes. I’m wishing, I’m wanting, I’m hooked by these shots by photographer Anitta Behrendt.

We’ve gotten several requests lately for posts featuring photos of small spaces. So today I thought I’d feature some small-ish kitchens for your viewing pleasure.

If you’d like to send us photos to include in next week’s “pets on furniture” post, please ensure your photos follow our basic rules: First, the pet must be on a piece of furniture. And said piece of furniture must be clearly visible in the photo, so it takes center stage. (Think of it more of a photo of a great piece of furniture…and your pet happens to be sitting on it). And second, the photo must be of decent quality. If it’s REALLY dark or fuzzy (from a camera phone) then it may not make the cut. Thanks! (Photos can be sent to desiretoinspirekim@hotmail.com)

“As I was reading your blog on Monday, I realized that I have never grabbed a shot of my Coton de Tulear, Libby, who loves to lounge on anything mid-century modern (really she loves to lounge on anything) for your blog feature.  I grabbed my camera from the bag and snapped off a shot of her relaxing in her favorite Vladimir Kagan chair. She always prefers the one on the left – go figure.“

“This is Piper, our tiny Golden Retriever, on “her” – our Ikea Poang.  Piper adopted the Poang shortly after we adopted her.  She isn’t normally allowed on our furniture – she has a congenital condition called megaesophagus which means basically that she can’t swallow her food properly without a lot of help, making her a very messy puppy to have on a couch…  But she staked out the chair so early on that we have happily surrendered it to her.“

Up on the roof watching the world go by. Nothing like a modern penthouse dropped down slap bang on the roof of an old warehouse complex. Up here it’s just the birds and no pesky neighbours to right or left. Modern simplicity and a pretty cool art collection. Real estate stalking again. Link here while it lasts.

Sensual, sultry and just a little wicked in a very grown up way. New work from Atlanta interior designer Michael Habachy. (See our previous post here.) It’s glamorous and broody, high end and hedonistic, OTT and fab. Michael has shared photos from a Buenos Aires’ bachelor pad, his Holiday House master bath and wardrobes and Atlanta nightclub AURUM. His new website is a visual treat with full screen images and sensuous sounds.

WINKS – weekend links. Here we list what has come in during the week, things we’ve found and things we think you’ll want to see. If you’d like to see your blog or website featured email us and if we think it fits with our readers we’ll link you. So what’s in this week?

• Ali Sandifer Studio – beautiful hand crafted furniture. “The collection largely integrates storage into its form, striving to make furniture that is both intelligent and attractive. We take pride in hand-producing our work in house. This intimacy and knowledge of craft is essential to the way we design.” Environmentally sensitive pieces made to last. I just want to run my hands over those curves!

•  maison et toi – an online gallery of the most gorgeous (and needless to say expensive) 20th century design. I’d most likely sell my soul for quite a few of Raji Radhakrishnan’s “objects of desire”.  A girl can dream! More here as well.

• Another stunning rug range from Designer Rugs. Minnie Pwerle was, until her death in 2006, one of Australia’s most important indigenous artists. Minnie was born in 1910 but didn’t start painting until 1999. Her works are based on the body paintings on the women in her Atnwengerrp country. Stunning modern rugs steeped in an ancient culture. I want to move into that first room.

• The new rustic. Brooklyn based Nightwood reconstructs and reincarnates furniture and textiles with a down to earth vibe. Myriah Scruggs and Nadia Yaron repurpose, re-use and re-love.



“Holy sh*t” was my initial reaction when I came across the portfolio of Gregory Phillips Architects. Based in London, Gregory Phillips (who is an architect AND interior designer) produces modern spaces that startle and delight, with windows that capture and frame the glorious views that eliminate the need for artwork. The trees are the art. And did I mention the windows??? (OH – and that media room is RIDUNCULOUS. I’ve got to show that to the BF).

Dear Dexter (I hope I may call you Dexter),

It’s really not fair. Not only are you a great photographer, you get to hang out in the coolest houses. I know it’s work but look at that view! I mean Dexter your job has perks. I’m trying hard to find fault but it’s impossible. Your work is stunning. The light in your photos is so bright, so white but it only makes the shadows so much more inviting. It’s no surprise you’re based in Spain. No it’s really not fair. I want to be you.
