The 2011 iF concept design Showcase on Yanko Design – Part I

25 Jan

It has been the most fantastic journey to sift through the 300 shortlisted entries of the 2011 iF concept design awards. Yanko Design being the Official Media Partners, was privy to this exclusive list. I call it exclusive because this is the first time the entire lineup will be exhibited anywhere on this blogosphere. Generally the Winning One Hundred entries are showcased and that’s about it. Cheers to the designers & design schools for their encouragement. Here’s a look at the first batch of inspirational, innovative and intuitive designs.

Please note, full details will be updated later.

No Ordinary Ruler

25 Jan

I have been reading message boards for people who suffer from visual impairments and one discussion topic I found was how difficult it is to use rulers. The problem, especially with centimetres and millimeters, is that while the numbers on a ruler can be made bigger, the unit of measurement is fixed, so reading millimeters if you have problems with your sight becomes difficult.

Check out the New Rule. The solution is to have bigger numbered, higher contrast measurement bars that a sliding pointer runs along, displaying the millimeter measurement as numbers on a wheel inside the sliders housing. An arm inside the slider rests against the track and clicks each time it passes over a tooth in the track giving tactile and audible feedback of each millimeter although the designer admits the track would need more teeth than the prototyped version shown here. The second innovation is one edge folds over on a hinge. This turns it into a calliper so that accurate measurements can be taken quickly and easily. This was intended to make it easier for someone with poor sight to measure marks on paper as well as objects.

Speed Demon Powered by Biofuel

21 Jan

As the world moves away from petrol, we have to envisage what the effects will be across all motor vehicles. This concept sport Modenas bike uses biofuel, specifically palm oil to burn pavement. The design is inspired by cenderawasih, a type of bird of paradise. The resulting shape is aggressive yet fluid. It’s not my cup of tea but I know many rocket heads that would love to take this to the tracks.

Touch Cooking

21 Jan

Gorenje+ exclusive built-in appliances premiered at LivingKitchen 2011 featuring the unique iChef+ oven module with a large color display that makes cooking easier with a touchscreen interface. The interface lets you program exactly what it is you’re cooking. It’s designed to be simple but the brains behind the system is incredibly innovative. No cooking appliance has ever had an integrated computer this powerful. On sale in European markets this Spring.

Look Before You Leap, Think Before You Design!

20 Jan

99% of the time we are very defensive about the designs we feature. We tend NOT TO highlight their flaws as long as we know there was effort, and c’mon no one is perfect! Having said that, the Box Cutter falls into the 1% category. It is a simple cargo box with an integrated cutter. The theory being you never find the paper cutter when you really need it, but hold on a second…

You can’t integrate sharp objects into packaging…it is against the LAW, especially in air-cargo! Essentially a very clever design is wasted! This is why we all need to look before we leap and think before we design!

Perfect Cup of Tea

20 Jan

Special Teatime is a braille embossed thermos to aid the visually impaired in making the perfect cup of tea. The fancy art of brewing different kinds of blends is made easier with the help of a special infuser compartment that dips the teabag into the water and lifts it at the right timed interval. Here’s to a refershing cup of tea. Cheers!

Special Teatime is a 2010 Red Dot Concept Award winning entry.

Nude Power Bike in Three Colors

19 Jan

This bike comes in red, white, or black, like any good motorcycle should. Its description is presented to us as a mostly poetic sort of situation, naming “Style&Skills” as a main point, noting soft lines around a technological core, saying that this motorcycle concept, the Ducati Spite, has two souls. One of the souls is extreme simplicity, they say, and the other, a full detailed concept. Like the black and white of the wheels.

There’s several ways you can ride the Spite, a couple of them being City and Sport, both of these thanks to its variable suspension. This bike they say shall get both the extremeness of a one-sit bike, and the comfort of a city maxi scooter. Urban and freestyle, extreme every day.

Classified Trash

19 Jan

Separating rubbish is time consuming and nobody likes to do it. A micro-level system to make the job easy is the Trash Classification Bin. The bin-in-bin is used to put in all your organic waste  while the bigger bin holds inorganic stuff. A very non-messy and quick way to do your bit. I’ll take one for my office, please.

fANTastic Table

18 Jan

In case my title wasn’t obvious enough, this is the Ant Table by Oliver Nikolic – a modern take on a coffee table that emphasizes simplicity and functionality by using simple materials; wood and glass. Two tabletops at different levels are connected with gently curved legs. Look closely and you may see how it got its name. It’s an ideal compliment to any contemporary living space and every aspect of the design expresses a simplicity that gives it a timless qualitty.

Blackbird Mercedes Goes Tron

18 Jan

This is no run-of-the-mill Mercedes. This is a design exercise that pays homage to Mercedes-Benz’s racing history. The streamlined body is supposed to evoke airplanes, speed and movement. I love looking at exploratory sketches because you can get a feel on what designer Peter Vardai was thinking. As he evolved each shape, the decision to “TRON” out the design seemed like a good idea. Audi just released an official concept so why not Mercedes too?
