Flea market style

11 Mar

Whenever I see “flea market” on the cover of a book or magazine I instantly become giddy like a school girl. Jo and I are HUGE suckers for flea markets and thrift shops so when our stylist/photographer friend Matthew Mead (whom we’ve featured a zillion times) emailed us about a new magazine called Flea Market Style he and his thrifting pal Ki Nassauer put together, we were stoked to get our hands on it. It arrived while I was on holidays and what a treat to come home to. I devoured it the first chance I got and I love it. Anyone with a passion for thrifting should run to their nearest bookstore and snag a copy. Anyone with a passion for crafting and turning ordinary flea market junk into beautiful and handy objects for around the house should do the same. The ideas are SO fun and creative – like turning a side table into a dog bed, 8 ways to decorate with your fav dishes and a bunch of uses for vintage funnels (who knew?) and your granny’s old lace. There are some really gorgeous spreads – one of a 1933 country-modern decorated farmhouse, a girly playhouse, a beachy garden shed, a stable given a 1950s retro facelift and more. I snapped a few shots of some of my favourite photos from the mag (90% of which were shot by Matthew himself) to give you all a bit of a sneak peak. Check out the blog set up for the magazine for more info. (Thanks Matthew!)

More from Mexico

11 Mar

I had such a blast in Mexico that I thought I’d share some more photos that I took. These are again from some of the shops (plus a couple extras) in the town of Sayulita. I was so in love with all the ethnic/global/wordly items that I was devastated knowing I had only part of a suitcase to fill instead of a shipping container.

ELM & Willow House, An Inside Out Design from Architects Eat

11 Mar

The residence in the images below is a restoration of a Edwardian building in Australia developed by Architects Eat. The project team stated that their intention was “to create an Inside is outside is inside environment, where inside and outside spaces were interchangeable elements”. The construction took 18 months to finish, but is was worth the wait. The property also features a beautiful courtyard enclosed by the “U”-shaped building. We really like the natural feel of this place as well as its amazing location. Surprisingly enough, a part of the house was suspended not to damage in any way the roots of the near-by trees. The architects not only redesigned an existing home, but also added an extension. The interior also applies to the “outside is inside” rule, featuring materials and elements that are not usually found indoors. -via MOOD

“Tout Va Bien Cabinet” from Antoine+Manuel

11 Mar

We here on Freshome love to show you furniture items that break the patterns and bring a plus of originality to an interior. Recently we ran into this interesting cabinet. It is called “Tout Va Bien Cabinet” -in translation “everything will be alright”- and belongs to Antoine+Manuel, a team of graphic designers from France. We liked its shape and tiny feet which we consider to be quite unusual. Further more, the carvings are very interesting.  They are the focus point of the cabinet and an distinctive element. The item comes in both white and black and can be integrated in a minimalist interior with simple arrangements. The price is available on request on the manufacturer’s page here.

10 Amazing Leather Designs, Good Alternatives to Wallpapers

11 Mar

Studioart is a company in Italy specialized in leather design. Their works are truly impressive and we would like to present a few of their latest collections today. It is hard to imagine that these amazing wall ideas in the pictures below are soft and cuddly. When we first saw them we thought that these were tiles like any others, made from sand stone. We were wrong. Pieces of leather are combined with other types of shiny or mate materials in order to create beautiful and innovative patterns. The color palette is either peaceful or very bold, depending on the interior they will serve.  We hope we’ve given you an inspiring alternative for conventional wallpapers or for wall painting. You can find more information on each collection on the site of the producer. How do you like them?

“Window” from Jonas Forsman, A Sound Absorbing Magazine Display

11 Mar

Jonas Forsman is a designer from Göteborg, Sweden who works in the field of product design, creating “ingenious solutions with simplified shape”. Today we would like to share with you one of his latest projects. “Window” is a sound absorbing magazine display which is a great solution for noisy interiors. Jonas noticed that the need for such devices is growing faster than ever before, which is the reason for creating such an original design. Public spaces like libraries or office rooms are the main beneficiaries of the product. However, a similar item could be placed in the kids’ room where a sound absorbing system could help parents have a good night’s rest.

A Breathtaking Residential Project in Peru by JSª Architects

11 Mar

JSª is a team of architects from Mexico City. They recently developed this breathtaking residential project situated by the beach in Lima, the capital of Peru. The location couldn’t be better- a peaceful area located not far away from the urban madness, where all the major events take place. A white and captivating exterior, with large windows draws attention to the building that houses 4 apartments. Stone stairs connect the levels on the outside.  A beautiful pool completes the mystical feel of this residential wonder. The interior design is modern and minimalist, with interesting furniture items and original color arrangements. We don’t know why the building is called “22″, but we really like its name. -via Platforma Arquitectura

Gary Hutton

11 Mar

With a degree in fine arts it’s easy to see where the sculptural influences in interior designer Gary Hutton’s work come from. It’s about volume and form, about material and finish. It’s also about the art and the art of living. Clean lines with minimalism tempered by luxury. Think contemporary interiors complimented by contemporary art. It’s his trademark. Had to include the toilet roll wall. Clever but I’d be a little too obessive about keeping it full.

Fashionable Home in Denver, A Showcase of Luxury And Style

11 Mar

Located in Cherry Creek, one of the most “trendy” neighborhoods in Denver, this property amazes through luxury, style and design. The fashionable home catches one’s attention from a great distance, due to its large windows and the combination of stone and stainless steel used to style up the exterior. The overall costs of this building were $4,695,000, a striking sum, but one that justifies what the place houses. When stepping inside, a live-life-to-the-fullest interior is revealed. The residence features an impressive wine room, a library, an indoor office and of course, a well defined entrainment area. We also like the interior design of this house, with interesting furniture elements and the inspiring decorating ideas. We are waiting for you to highlight the things you enjoy seeing and the ones you dislike in the pictures below. -via DigsDigs

Imposing Residence From Shun Hirayama Architecture : “Les Aventuriers”

11 Mar

Les Aventuriers” comes from Shun Hirayama Architecture and is an imposing hillside residence located in Kanagawa Prefecture, an area with beautiful surroundings. The owners wanted a peaceful home that would be integrated in a natural environment. However, when it came to design and architecture, the land was not as peaceful. The house is built on a slope which means you will find angled walls and various ceiling heights. We really liked a concept put together by the developers of the project, as it brings an unique interpretation of the overall design. And here it is: “We produced a path that possesses comfortable straight eyesight, analogous to walking between trees. The path connects the inside and the outside, and again backs to the inside without a dead-end.” We hope you will like the “tree-house feel” of this place and we are looking forward to your comments.-via Design Boom
