Within reach of paradise

20 Nov

Another project by Auckland architects Crosson Clarke Carnachan Architects. I couldn’t help myself. I love their work. New Zealand is such a beautiful country with architecture that celebrates the land of the long white cloud. This alteration and addition to a Queenstown house sits comfortably within its stunning surrounds. Stone and glass and metal. Areas for communing and others for cocooning. Luxury and practicality and all with that view. God’s own country I believe.

Hut on sleds

19 Nov

Resting gently on the sand dune just up from a pristine beach on New Zealand’s Coromandel beach is a hut, a simple yet not so simple beach hut. Only 40 square metres it makes the most of every bit of space to provide a beach side getaway for a family of five. It can be closed to the elements yet with the turn of a wheel and the push of glass walls it opens to the view. Oh the view! Worth it don’t you think. What makes this little self contained hut even more special is that it sits on two sleds that, with a little effort from a sturdy tractor, can make repositioning the home in response to the ever changing beachfront easy. It sits lightly upon the land this simple, clever hut. Beach side living stripped back to its elegant basics. It was time to go back and explore the portolio of  Auckland based Crosson Clarke Carnachan Architects again. So glad I did.

Friday stalking

18 Nov

Friday! Oh sweet, sweet Friday. Let’s end the week with another virtual real estate home inspection (ahem … stalking). I’m in Clifton Hill, Melbourne where architects and designers Branov Design have renovated and extended this Edwardian era house into a stylish, modern home … their own stylish, modern home in fact. Understated drama, fab family open plan, cool bathroom and check out the hallway carpet. Have a feeling you may have seen this house before? You’re right. You have. It was in a recent issue of Inside Out but I will forgive you if you didn’t realise straight away. It certainly doesn’t look quite as fab and funky in the real estate shots. Shows the difference between a real estate listing and a magazine story – the difference is a stylist and a good interiors photographer as you will see in the last photo. Link here while it lasts.

A terrace home in Sydney

3 Nov

Jessica Zavaglia, an interior architect and designer for Danny Broe Architect, emailed about a fun project they completed in Surry Hills, Sydney. Their task was to create a more functional home that was open and bright. The rear of existing ground floor was completely demolished and the top, fully brick floor has been propped up by the new red frame. In addition, we extended the new kitchen into the existing breezeway and we excavated the backyard to create a car space that is not visible from the kitchen. The car is concealed by the planter box. The owner loves colour so making the beam red was a cool idea, and the bright orange in the kitchen is gorgeous with the wood floor and wall. Glen2961

Stone and concrete are warmed with wood accents. Walls slide back blurring boundaries. Multiple living areas welcome social interactions whether cosy conversations or large parties. The hub is the kitchen with family life spreading out to greet the outdoor spaces. Yes we all know we want to call up our friends, mix the drinks and have plenty of towels on hand for when we climb out of the pool. A sense of casual sophistication. Easy going but stylish. A trophy house? Yes but you deserve it. The latest home by SAOTA – Stefan Antoni Olmesdahl Truen Architects and Three14 Architects in Higgovale, Cape Town.
