The most important feature of a home is its ability to perpetually offer the feeling of a comfortable living space. Situated in Lí¶rrach, Germany, the residence you are about to see is a rather simple 651 sqm construction, offering possibilities of further construction in the future. The single family home designed by andOFFICE combines the comfort of an open plan living zone with the compactness of a modern home. A terrace offers fresh air and the connection to the exterior space. The southwest part of the terrace supports a cantilevering first floor that features the option of having up to 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. There is more space in the fully insulated basement for two additional bedrooms. A solid wood cladding protects and beautifies the external part of the building, while excellent wood fibre insulation and triple glazed windows ensure a constant temperature. Featuring heat-recovery ventilation, solar collector and usage of rain water, the residence has a low impact on the environment. An exceptional colour composition completes the interior and exterior design of this amazing architecture, wouldn’t you say so?

For Greener Cities: Urban Bike Hangers by MANIFESTO

13 Apr

http://interiordesignsense.com/tag//

We don’t know about you guys, but where we live there is a dire need for safe bicycle parking spaces. Which is why this concept left us speechless. Called “Bike Hanger“, this ingenious urban bike hanger idea comes from MANIFESTO Architecture P.C. and pays tribute to a greener life in the city. Especially designed for Seoul, the project is looking to increase the inhabitant’s love for this healthy type of locomotion while using underutilized spaces around the city and reinventing them. The Bike Hangers are able to hold between 20-36 bicycles each and are said not to influence the traffic below in any way. We find the concept brilliant in its simplicity and can’t wait for it to be spread worldwide. Freshome readers, what do you think of this idea?

Let’s Play House!

10 Apr

As a kid, I had a life-size playhouse in our backyard. ‘ It was pretty basic: a box, with a pitched roof, one exterior window, a dutch door. ‘ It was painted blue with white trim. ‘ Completely unfinished on the inside with no electricity or running water (joke). ‘ At certain times of the year it was cold and damp inside with a musty smell. ‘ But regardless, it was my little retreat and I played in there for hours with friends. ‘ Or rather, I played for hours, friends stayed for brief visits. ‘ I couldn’t even manage to keep Scamp, our Cocker Spaniel in there for very long, he always wanted out for some reason. ‘ It moved with us about three times and then I finally outgrew it prior to our next move. So my parent’s put it “on the market” and surprisingly it *sold* rather quickly.

Well, the “playhouse real estate” market has changed quite a bit back from the time I had one! I came across these architectural gems of a playhouse from a company called Smart Playhouse. ‘ If you are in the market for a modern and chic life-size playhouse – they sell ones for both indoor and outdoor.

Lets Play House!

The Illinois offers great views and a front porch.

Lets Play House!

The Hobikken is still contemporary, but has a more rustic warm cottage feel.

Lets Play House!

The Kyoto (mini) is much more futuristic looking.

Lets Play House!

The Kyoto (maxi) offers a second story and is inspired by Japanese avant-garde architecture.

Lets Play House!

The Casaforum is made of wood and steel, with a textured facade.

For indoor playhouses, there are two options:

La Belle Juliette

6 Apr

I would LOVE to plan a trip to Europe one day. I went once to Italy when I was 4 to visit family (my mom is Italian). That is the extent of my European travels. SAD. Of course I’d have to visit Italy, but now it looks like I’d definitively have to plan a trip to Paris too, and stay at the new (opened Jan 2011) 4-star hotel called La Belle Juliette. It’s located in central Paris, a short walk from Saint-Germain-des-Prés and the Jardin du Luxembourg where the world of fashion meets Paris’ most luxurious boutiques. It’s chic yet cozy, luxurious yet refined, thank to the decor prowess of Anne Gelbard, the Parisian expert of “home couture” and architecture by Vincent Bastie. I think I’m in love! Canyon Inspired Residence in the Netherlands with Original Architecture Details

6 Apr

http://interiordesignsense.com/tag//

This uncommon looking residence was designed by architects 24H > architecture and is located in Leyden, The Netherlands. According to Arch Daily, the facade of the home is an echo of the “canyon” represented by this project: “the canyon flows through the house and encloses the stairs.” This feature allows light to enter the building and ensure a good illumination for each of the three floors. More explanations from the architects reveal that “the walls of the canyon are used to divide the house into the necessary spaces. No other walls are placed thus the canyon is present in every room. Where desired, the canyon becomes transparent and filters the daylight. Where needed, it’s closed and allows toilets and bathrooms to be placed behind its walls”. To us, this modern residence looks like a playful display of materials and shapes and we salute the originality of its architecture. How do you find it?

Southender Addition is a modern project designed by Shed Architects and located in Seattle, Washington. The clients needed an extra space for a bedroom and a guest bed, as well as for various storing needs. The result? An L-shaped volume which was added to the existing building, forming a tasteful and aesthetic architecture contrast. The new extension houses a bedroom, a dressing, a bathroom and a beautiful hallway with bookcase. Large windows ensure just the right amount of natural lighting needed by the owners. Moreover, the addition provides a shed for the outdoor dining table and creates an atmosphere that is perfect for socializing. Check out the “before” and “after” photo at the end of the post for a better understanding of the project and let us know if you would go for this type of home addendum.

Exceptional Container Home by and for Industrial Designer Debbie Glassberg [Video]

4 Apr

http://interiordesignsense.com/tag//

Who would have thought that containers will serve much more than their original purpose? Industrial designer Debbie Glassberg says she is driven by design and this is what helped her overcome ordinary architecture. Debbie Glassberg’s home is a 2,600 square feet structure made of five shipping containers that has a rather unusual appearance. Located in Kansas City, the extraordinary dwelling has it all: space, light and life. Featuring a white galley kitchen with energy efficient appliances as the heart of the house, Debbie’s home welcomes guests with a radiant ambiance and offers moments of admiration. Other rooms on the first floor have the same open floor plan as the bedrooms upstairs. On the roof of her new residence, Debbie grows a rooftop edible garden. The produce is stocked in an almost invisible pantry, protected by a large, white sliding door, as you can see in the first video below. Apart from having a green roof, the residence also features geothermal heating, plant foam insulation and some passive solar. The good news is that Debbie will be constructing homes for anyone interested. Her project, Home Contained, is one that could turn into a large scale industry, especially if the construction costs are lower than average. Would you live in a container home?

Contemporary University Design: Ravensbourne College Building in London

27 Mar

http://interiordesignsense.com/tag//

The digital media and design section of Ravensbourne College in London can now take pride in their new college building. The project below was completed by Foreign Office Architects in order to meet the shifting demands of 21st century learners. Here is more from the project developers: “The architecture of the building has been designed to express the culture of contemporary production, by using a non-periodic tiling system which symbolises a more diverse and contemporary approach to technology. Gothic rose windows and flower patterns have also been a rich field of inspiration for the project, but in this building they will not be produced as an imitation of nature but as an abstract construction. To achieve this we have resorted to the use of a non-periodic tiling pattern on the façade, which allowed us to build seven different types of windows out of only three different tiles.” Freshome readers, what is your choice-’  traditional or contemporary university building designs?

When Architecture Takes a Backseat to Nature

25 Mar

-and it works. With it’s super minimal (even dark) interior, the Juvet hotel uses modern design elements to bring focus to the natural beauty of the Norwegian fjord landscape in which it is situated. Each of Juvet’s 10 rooms are positioned in the most stunning spots of the topography, and each sports at least 1 glass wall facade with it’s own unique view of the picturesque landscape. A perfect retreat for nature lovers who believe that less is more.
