If you go down to the woods today …

22 Dec

If you go down to the woods today ...

… you’re in for a big surprise. Sometimes mother nature wraps you up in her beauty and takes your breath away. Sometimes architects get this. Sometimes they wrap you up in the beauty they create,  in buildings that address the wonder of the site in which they are placed. I think I am in love with this Dutchess County, New York guesthouse by Allied Works Architecture. Located in a mature deciduous forest of oak, hickory, and birch.  A continuous structural steel frame blurs the boundary between forest and house. It seems to meander, to wind in and out capturing views of the changing seasons.

CKR

29 Nov

Those Swedes are some talented folks let me tell ya! The trio behind architecture and design firm Claesson Koivisto Rune are at it again (Jo featured them here) with many more minimalist projects. Spaces like these reeeeeeally make me want to get rid of all my crap and enjoy some sparseness.

Family pod

Family pod

For when guests and extended family stay over. A perfect pod. Part prefabricated, part site built it is the work (again) of Craig Steely Architecture. Sitting lightly on a lavaflow site the modernist lines of the Ohanapod (family pod) provide connection to its surrounds. Tropical retreat with privacy, shading and cross flow. A cool pad in more ways than one.

Serge Mouille lighting

18 Nov

On Monday Jo blogged the interior photography of Hallie Burton, and in that post were a couple of photos of a VERY cool light fixture. A reader named Martha asked about it, and I told her it was the creation of Serge Mouille. She noted that since I had already blogged about Jieldé lights (here and here), that I might be up for featuring another French lighting design. I was certainly up for the challenge, as I have coveted Serge Mouille fixtures for some time now. Unfortunately I don’t think I’ll be owning one of these beauties anytime soon as they are awfully pricey. Damn.

Punta or getting to the point

19 Oct

Stone and drifts of flowers. Wood and water. Formal and casual. Substantial walls and willowing drapes. The stone vernacular of Uruguayan architecture floats on flowers, touches the earth and provides a stylish hearth and home. Martin Gómez and his architectural studio address the site, caress the landscape and reach inwards to create the perfect home. La Pedrera, La Barra, Punta del Este, Uruguay. (You can see our original post on Martin Gómez Arquitectos here.)

Reader request – black kitchens

4 Aug

Today’s reader request comes from Beverly: I am considering painting my kitchen cabinets black, at least the lowers. Most likely will do the uppers, which are doorless, in white to keep the room from being too dark. There is no natural light. Do you have any inspirations? I sure do!! I LOVE kitchens with black, whether it be just an island, or a wall, or cabinets. Now without natural light maybe painting the uppers white is a good idea but if you have a reasonable amount of wall space and you paint that white, then you likely could get away with painting all the cabinets black. Plus whatever you are displaying in the door-less uppers will show so nicely against the black. I couldn’t find many photos with black lowers and white uppers but you’ll see in many of these photos that white uppers maybe aren’t necessary.

Another sweet London pad

25 May

The folks at Domus Nova (the London estate agency I blogged about here) kindly send over some photos of another of their properties. This time it’s an incredible home in terms of it’s architecture, with several glass walls and roofs. The central feature of the 4 bedroom property is a massive 2 story atrium with a glass bridge. I have to say the decor is not really something to write home about. I appreciate the global vibe but the main furnishings are pretty bland and really could be much funkier to blend with the cool, modern architectural details. That’s ok though – the glass walls and roof sections are doing it for me.

La Finca by Uxus

13 May

Uxus crafts experiences that people fall in love with. Brand strategy, architecture and interior design. “We fuse rational design solutions with artistic sensibilities, striking a perfect balance between emotional connection and tangible results.” What they really do is design beautiful dreams … like this farm in Mallorca, Spain. Rustic counterbalanced with sophistication. Historic with new. Cooling, cave-like interiors with dramatic exteriors. Luxury with simplicity. Chiaroscuro balanced with harmony. An undeniable beauty. (Kim featured their Amsterdam canal house 3 years ago and it still sits in the front of my inspiration file … exactly where this house is going too.)

MR Architecture + Decor (again)

3 May

One of the pet entries from yesterday was submitted by Kimberly, who works for MR Architecture + Decor, a very cool firm based in New York. I went through our archives and found that Jo blogged this firm back in ’08 but I noticed many more photos on their website that I was keen on sharing with you all. This firm has a very clean, modern and at times minimalist approach which results in some very serene and sophisticated spaces, but also with the use of intriguing furnishings many are also energetic and funky. I’m a fan.
