Furniture Friday: Patterned Pieces

Furniture Friday: Patterned Pieces

{Miles Redd as seen in House Beautiful}

Many times clients are hesitant to add a crazy pattern into the mix because they are scared they will tire of it quickly.  My theory is the opposite, I think we tire much quicker of a sea of beige than one a punchy piece.  If you love the fabric, then chances are that’s the piece you’ll love the most.  I love solid color upholstery as much as the next person because it is timeless and versatile, but I’d love to find a place for a colorful settee.

The much blogged about Living Room of Ivanka Trump (which I still love).  Settee upholstered in a LuluDK fabric.

Patterned pieces don’t have to be all crazy-pants either as the above two images prove.

 Have a great weekend everyone!  I think now I’ll spend mine looking for a great vintage piece to recover in one of my favorite prints!

Kelly Deck

24 Aug

It’s been ages since Jo blogged about Vancouver interior designer Kelly Deck. I stumbled across some of her work recently in a magazine and was pleased to find many fabulous spaces on her website crying out for an updated post. I always thought of her as the queen of exteriors but it appears she certainly knows what she’s doing on the inside as well. Her kitchens and bathrooms are what dreams are modern and totally dreamy.

William Waldron update

16 Aug

Back in ’07 Jo blogged about photographer William Waldron a couple of times (here and here). I thought it was time for a long overdue update of his work as I find his photos completely captivating and almost mysterious, as if there were people enjoying these spaces moments before they were captured on camera.

Southern Charm

17 Jul

After I came across the much blogged about “Chatham House” project by interior designer Melanie Turner, I realized that I admired not only her style but also that of her architect/builder husband, Steve Benecki. ‘ Based in Atlanta, this Southern couple has joined forces to create some extremely beautiful, high-quality homes. ‘ Reason I use the term “high-quality” is because new construction does not necessarily mean well-done. ‘ Homes built today do not always stand the test of time, and in 10 years or so can turn out looking dated and weary.

However, these homes are exceptional…they are truly timeless and elegant without being bland. ‘ Between Benecki’s eye for quality construction and Turner’s taste for clean sophistication, this duo is a design force to be reckoned with.

I recently installed two works by artist Todd Murphy, who created the elegant and incredible photography featured on the back wall in the image below, in my designed entryway and grand staircase at the Lake Forest Showhouse. The works ultimately were snatched up and will be installed in one of my all time favorite client projects in Winnetka. Lucky me AND my clients!

Recognize this home? (Chatham House, designs by’ Turner Davis Interiors)

MR Architecture + Decor (again)

3 May

One of the pet entries from yesterday was submitted by Kimberly, who works for MR Architecture + Decor, a very cool firm based in New York. I went through our archives and found that Jo blogged this firm back in ’08 but I noticed many more photos on their website that I was keen on sharing with you all. This firm has a very clean, modern and at times minimalist approach which results in some very serene and sophisticated spaces, but also with the use of intriguing furnishings many are also energetic and funky. I’m a fan.

Antoine Bootz

8 Mar

In our research for the blog we have come across good photographers, and then we have come across GREAT photographers. Antoine Bootz is the latter. I adore his portfolio of interiors, and because of the caliber of his photos I can’t help but fall in love with the spaces at the same time. I want all of the following rooms. (P.S. I blogged Antoine back in ’08 too).

Eva Lindh encore

***Pets on furniture posts will resume next week when I return from holidays! – Kim

Back in ’08 Jo blogged some beautiful photos from the portfolio of Swedish stylist Eva Lindh. I came across her website recently and found more photos of gorgeous Scandinavian spaces that I had to share, ’cause you all know Jo and I can’t get enough of this style…(especially for me during another dull, dark and dreary winter).

From Fabric House to Fashion House

27 Feb

Just a few weeks ago Emily blogged about Kelly Wearstler’s fabric turned fashion, as seen in the picture below. ‘ Over a year ago, I featured a post on an announcement that Kelly would be venturing into fashion design. ‘ And as many of you may have seen, the collection has made it’s debut launching with a Fall 2011 collection that includes clothes, jewelry, clutches, and scarves. ‘ The collection will be sold at Bergdorf Goodman in a space designed by Kelly herself. ‘ Prince points range from $205 to $1,395 for clothes, $155-$995 for jewelry, and $795-$995 for purses (per source).

{A fabric from Kelly’s fabric line at Lee Jofa worn as a skirt.}

Thanks to Kelly’s marketing team, they allowed me access to some additional images of her fashion line to download for the Material Girl’s blog.

Here’s a preview of what will soon be in available!

Heidi’s new pad

24 Feb

Back in May of last year, Jo blogged the awesome San Francisco pad of DTI reader Heidi Lender. It turns out Heidi recently moved to Uruguay, and she gave us a little glimpse of her home in the first photo of this pet post a few weeks ago. She kindly sent us some photos of her new digs, along with a bit of info. She’s done an incredible job and I’m so excited to share it with you all.

Excited about our new digs — a century-old ranch in Uruguay, whose dilapidated little house we are in the midst of remodeling — and wanted to share (even though it’s not completely done). We sent a container’s worth of our belongings from San Francisco, and smattered with its contents, this rundown house felt immediately like home (not without a lot of construction woes and obstacles and dust, of course). You can see all of the furnishings from the San Fran flat that you posted back in May….amazed at how different it all looks down here. We bought the O’Keefe and Merrit stove off of Craigslist and shipped it down too, along with the vintage sink in the bathroom that had been sitting in our backyard forever, waiting for the perfect home.

P.S. Her photos are pretty fab – turns out she’s a photographer! Check out her website here. I freaking love her Once Upon self-portait series (a photo-tale that examines the individual through fashion and environment). A few of those photos are featured after the jump.
