Egg carton crafts have never looked so good. Designed by Dan Hochberg and Odelia Lavie, ‘Pulp Furniture’ adapts the same process used to create protective pulp packaging to fashion stylish and modern furniture. The series, which consists of a coffee table, complimentary seating and a wall clock, may maintain a fragile look, but is far from flimsy.

Furniture Friday: Lucite Coffee Tables

7 May

First of all, before I digress AGAIN about how much I love lucite/acrylic tables, I HAVE to share this Austin Craig’s List posting that my friend Katherine so kindly sent to me.  I mean the title KILLS ME.  Amazing.  Someone in Austin please buy this table and report back on the buying experience because I bet it would be well worth the trip to Leander.

Okay, back to business.  The above two images of my mega t.v. producer Ellen Rakieten’s apartment decorated by both Nate Berkus AND Anne Coyle is home to my DREAM coffee table.  A 1960’s mix of lucite and gold…sigh.

I stopped dead in my tracks when I saw this in the Wisteria catalog today…the thought literally crossed my mind, “okay, but how would I add gold to it?!”   If you’ve seen my living room, you know I do not need anymore gold!

Online Consign!

6 May

Dallas Design Guide has recently launched the DG Consignment Board on their website.  Here, you can fine furniture and accessories from Texas consignments.  These include things that came from showrooms, galleries, and designers themselves!

What’s funny is that I have spent the last three weekends going from consignment shop to consignment shop in Dallas looking for a unique dresser and a coffee table.  When this email popped up yesterday, I was so thrilled to see that there is now a virtual consignment shop that has Dallas treasures compiled into one place!  Imagine the gas money (not to mention time and energy) I could have saved just sitting at my computer.  Hopefully more consignment shops will follow this trend- wouldn’t that be nice?

Some of my favorite finds from the DG Consignment Board-

Wayfarer Side Chair

Calypso Chair and Ottoman

Sofa Lounge with Acrylic Base

Mies Bruno Chairs

Coming soon…I’ll be posting my Dallas consignment shop adventures and those amazing objects I’ve come across (at a steal), that someone out there needs to snatch up!!  Times like this, I wish I had a big storage unit for those “one day I’ll need this” finds!

Grand Central Folding Center Table for Small Spaces

4 May

Here are the before, during, and after shots of the Grand Central table that folds out from 22 pieces to reveal a surprisingly large coffee table. Designers Sanna Lindström and Sigrid Strömgren offer two options for this compact folding table design that goes from a small accessory drink or end table to the much larger round coffee table. Perfect for those who are challenged by space and need the extra room on command.

Monday’s pets on furniture – part 2

3 May

If you’d like to send us photos to include in next week’s “pets on furniture” post, please ensure your photos follow our basic rules: First, the pet must be on a piece of furniture. And said piece of furniture must be clearly visible in the photo, so it takes center stage rather than your pet. (Think of it more of a photo of a great piece of furniture…and your pet happens to be sitting on it). And second, the photo must be of decent quality. If it’s dark or fuzzy (from a camera phone) then it may not make the cut. Thanks! (Photos, your name and a brief description can be sent to desiretoinspirekim@hotmail.com and PLEASE don’t send me closeups of your pet!)

This is Jeremiah and he LOVES anything new, so he’s settled down into a new basket on the cocktail table…

These are my feathered babies. My cockatiel was having fun in our living room as she recovered from her sore wing (got caught in his cage, thank god his wing wasn’t broken). The other one is my lovely 14 year old yellow headed amazon, his name is Mauricio.

1 – This is just how Oscar sits all the time.  NEVER on the floor….always like a human, on a piece of furniture….preferrably near a window.
2 – This is Oscar taken on Christmas Day 2009.  I received a copy of Cesar Millan’s “How to Raise a Perfect Dog” book for a gift and it was left on the coffee table.  Oscar claimed the chair beside the table and fell asleep sitting up.  I couldn’t resist this shot!

This is my cat Jake laying on my amazing down filled vintage couch from the 70′s. I found it in someone’s yard with a FREE sign on it (SCORE)! Being strategically placed under a bright sunny window, it’s his favorite place to lounge.

My name is Shannon Ashburn and my Mastiff/hound mix is named Waylon.  My dog loves sleeping more than anything in life and I have a few shots of his weird positions.

My puppy “Pow Pow” on our leopard print coffee table/foot stools, I love the leopard pieces and my puppy so much.

1 – This is Riko.  He’s almost 5 and I adopted him in Kuwait when he was 1.  After overcoming the initial shock of moving from a shelter in the middle of the desert to a house, he decided that the bed is his safe place.  No matter where he is – my house, a hotel, or a relative’s home – he immediately jumps into the bed.  When he’s feeling lazy, he likes to have breakfast in bed.
2 – This is my mother’s dog Bandit who died in 2006.  Visiting me when I lived in Tunisia, he picked this chair as his favorite napping spot because my dogs refused to share their beds.
3 – This is Cashmere (left) and Riko (right) during our first week in Jordan.  None of my things had arrived and our apartment was filled with loaner items.  They picked the bed as the best place to spend time – leaving no room for me – until our furnishings arrived.”
“This is Annabelle, my parents’ darling black schnauzer. She’s a hit with everyone that visits, and gets way too much attention. She’s spoiled rotten, as you can see here.

Crazy Reptile Couch at Salone del Mobile, Milan 2010

30 Apr

This weird couch was the first design we saw at the Milan Furniture Fair. It was situated near the entrance, in a neutral place and we think it didn’t just come with the fair, but this is its permanent location. If there is anyone of you out there from Milan participating in other events at Rho Fiera, perhaps you can enlighten us. This item really captivated Michael who captured it in this photo, but wasn’t intrigued enough to go check out how it feels to sit on it. This curious looking sofa would fit in a large living room, next to a weird shaped coffee table. It doesn’t look very comfy, but the funny/unusual idea behind the design makes up for that.

Horus Coffee Table With iPod Dock

27 Apr

For many of us the iPod is nothing short of a technological wonder and we can’t even imagine life without it or in this case the afterlife! Meet the Horus Coffee Table which pays homage to this modern wonder, in ancient style. This not so ordinary table has an integrated dual speaker system, LED lighting and an iPod dock. French designer Stéphane Thivend will sure win the approval from the Cult of Mac with his creation and we would personally love to blast “Walk Like an Egyptian ” on it.

Pyramid Shaped Multi-Media Table for the Living Room

27 Apr

This multi-media table looks very much like a typical coffee table, but upon closer inspection it contains two speakers and a docking station for an iPhone or iPod. The base of the table is a pyramid which is a rather unusual element as a foundational object in home furnishings. This piece was created by Stephane Thivend. Learn more about the product: here.

Interesting Table Design at Salone Del Mobile, Milan 2010

22 Apr

During the Furniture Fair in Milano there were plenty of connected events all throughout the city. We tried to check out all of them, but only managed to participate in a few. Here is an interesting table design that we happened to come across while casually strolling through the design events in Milan. This unusual but very cool looking item was probably meant to be a coffee table, however its size exceeds the patterns. We really liked its black and white finish- which makes it easy for it to be placed in a variety of arrangements- and we loved the originality of the stacked layers. This sort of coffee table could really spice things up in a modern living room.
