Sculptural Furniture : The "Orb" by Peter Rolfe

19 Jan

Our Friends over at Dornob recently revealed the sculptural furniture designs of craftsman Peter Rolfe to which I say “wow”. The same old boxy designs we see over and over again are not part of Rolfe’s game plan. Instead shapely and complex and sometimes lifelike pieces that break away from norm offer function and conversation are. The “Orb” is one of my favorites and definitely shows a lot of creativity. See more of the Sculptural furniture series from Peter Rolfe here.

Habachy Heating it Up in A-Town!

10 Jan

There are some designers whose work I am just left speechless over- a feeling of awe, respect, and admiration for the designer’s work comes over me.  I am left wondering how I have never come across their work before and also excited that I have been introduced to a design firm with such talent and creativity.

Atlanta’s Habachy Designs is a dime a dozen in my opinion!  I visited their site the other day and was blown away.  Their designs are innovative, fresh, bold, unique, and downright stunning!  This Atlanta design firm focuses on both commercial and residential projects- each project with a personality all its own.

Polished Salon_Lounge

I have to say that although I love all of their work, I am most captivated by their commercial work.  Who wouldn’t want to get a mani/pedi in a sea of turquoise and hot pink bliss (perfect for the MG in all of us!) or have cocktails under neon lights? (hand raised over here!)

Their project photos are such delicious eye candy that I couldn’t wait to showcase them here.  Sit back, relax and get inspired!

Nueva Esperanza School / al bordE

9 Jan

Architects: al bordE arquitectos – David Barragán & Pascual Gangotena
Location: El Cabuyal, Manabí, Ecuador
Collaborators: Xavier Mera, José Antonio Vivanco y Estefanía Jácome
Client: Felipe Gangotena, The Teacher
Contractor: al bordE arquitectos, Pascual Gangotena, volunteers and the community of El Cabuyal
Design Year: 2009
Construction Year: 2009
Project Area: 36 sqm
Photographs: Esteban Cadena, Francisco Suarez y Pascual Gangotena

“For all of we, who belong to the Puerto Cabuyal Community, it´s been a cause of pride to have our new school. Our community is located on the beach, on the field, in a far away site, been fishing and agriculture the basis of our daily meals. Until 4 years ago there was no school in the community and because of that, most of its inhabitants were illiterate. We began with our school in a small cottage, but as the time passed, the space was got smaller because of the number of children, that’s why we undertook the construction of a new place”.

The Teacher

Most of the schools near the area are made of concrete, with a rectangular shape, with window bars that make it look more like a jail than a school, and the level of defection is very high. That is the reason why the project is looking for solving not only immediate problems but generate long-term solutions.

It was extremely necessary to design the space according to the principles of an active school. The project must be intimately closed with the natural environment nearby. A space were kids can wake up their imagination, their creativity, their desire of learning new things, and not an space were kids feel repressed.

construction process

The project uses the same materials and building patterns the community has been using for building for years. A timber basis above the foundation piles, bamboo walls, wood structure and a roof made of knitted straw scarf or “cade”. The difference lies in the conception and conceptualization of the space. A place for education that encourages learning through action.

“A huge change in the children´s learning process has been made since the very beginnings of the school. The action of opening the entrance door is a physics lesson. The space is generous in every way, which is why the kids feel freer finding each one their own place in which they are going to develop their activities. The model and the structure transmit a freshness and imaginative environment that has favored the development of artistic and academic activities through the lessons that gives the best teacher ever, nature”

The Teacher

Now, the children and their parents are proud of their school. Proud of the change that this school has made, been a motif of union and self-esteem for the whole community. When people from outside admire it, when they see it and know it.

“In our Fisher community, It´s the prettiest thing, having a school with a boat shape in where every day, kinds jump into it and get ready to sail and discover new worlds from their very own intern world full of abilities and potentialities. In where children learn science and technology, valuing the life of the field as an starting point, through the lessons given by the best teacher of all, the nature”

Khyber Ridge Residence by Studio NminusOne

5 May

NminusOne may not be the most innovative name for a design office, but the creativity of the architects definitely got us sold. Commissioned for Marc Morisset— a professional snowboarder, the five storey house is built like a shredder following the line of a steep mountain. Perfectly blending with the green environment, the Khyber Ridge Residence adds a tinge of “floating” and a bunch of unconventional details that get the eye. And although it looks old and worn, the interior is all about contemporary shapes and elegant furnishings, for more warmth (maybe during winter?). That’s nothing short of cool.

Black S-House 2 Residence by Tamizo Architects

29 Apr

It is always heartening to see creativity in “effect”, but this S-House 2 Residence close to Namyslow in Poland, takes the whole concept to a new level. Designed by the young and talented architects from Tamizo, this doubled-storied structure proves an ambitious project which features a black styled exterior that follows an elegant minimalist theme. And although it achieves a small contrast with the heavily vegetated lot, we sure miss one of those stylish pools just to have a place to hide from the sun when summer settles at the command. – via

Small Apartment Ideas by Tori Golub

22 Apr

When it comes to interior designing, it’s always easier when you get to deal with larger spaces rather than small apartments to stuff everything you have. However, interior specialist Tori Golub is here to assure us that with a little creativity and imagination, even lofts with limited space could look nice and cozy. All you have to do is pay much attention on the furniture you buy and the furnishings you apply. Some can make the room look larger, some will add the modern twist it needs and some will just make you feel comfortable when you step inside. I for one, definitely love the bed close to the window with a street view. Must be amazing in the morning and at night with all the lights, don’t you think? – via

Innovative Design: Nestle headquarters in Queretaro

16 Apr

After creating a tempting chocolate museum for Nestlé, Rojkind Arquitectos have been challenged to put up a new design a new facility in Querétaro, with laboratories, offices, an auditorium and a tasting area. That’s not much of a deal unless you consider the fact that in 1996 the center of Querétaro was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. But much can be done with a little creativity, isn’t it? The innovative architects managed to work around the conundrum by excavating a series of intersected spheres from orthogonal buildings, excavations which repeated through an open and continuous space. This along with simple use of semi-spherical domes ensured that the latest “nest” for Nestlé, turned out as an absolute masterpiece. – via
