BIG’s 8 Tallet Grabs the 2010 Scandinavian Green Roof Award

19 Aug

Bjarke Ingels Group, danish green, Danish design, Green roof, Copenhagen apartment, urban design, mixed use building,

We recently showcased BIG’s 8 Tallet mixed use project in Copenhagen and were wowed by its energy-efficient design, so we were excited to hear that it just received the 2010 Scandinavian Green Roof Award for its 1,700 square meter roof! The immense roof descends 11 stories to the ground, making it an integral part of the complex’s visual language — the judges commented that BIG has demonstrated a very clear and conscious use of the green roof successfully integrating it into the visual identity of the building”. The project has offices, apartments and retail all under one roof and it features a walkway that transverses the entire building, turning the exterior into a pedestrian path.

2 Jul

anderson anderson architecture, prefab house, prefabricated construction, chain link, metal siding, animal friendly

Not only is this striking metal-sided house a beautiful example of prefab architecture — it was also designed not just for the people who reside there, but also for their animals! The owners of the home wanted a safe haven for their many animals that would protect them from local predators, so the home was designed with special areas just for pets. Located in the New Mexico desert on the Rio Chama, the Abiquiu House by Anderson Anderson Architecture also utilizes a number of energy and resource-efficient construction techniques.

Fuel Cell Taxis Unveiled for 2012 London Olympics

8 Jun

A prototype of London’s future fuel cell taxi fleet was just unveiled at their city hall yesterday and has us a lil’ jealous of their forward thinking plans. The fleet of water emitting “black cabs” will help Londoners meet their goals of being tailpipe emissions free by 2020 and will green up their image just in time for the 2012 Olympics. It seems that London is trying to make the upcoming Olympic games as sustainable as possible — we reported on the games earlier this year — and these taxis will be no small part of that effort.

Seen over at Arch Daily this morning, Germany and China’s captivating German-Chinese House for the Shanghai World expo is a study in bamboo. The two story art building is the only pavilion in the Expo to utilize the extremely renewable and fast growing material as a load-bearing structure. Designed by Markus Heinsdorff in collaboration with MUDI, the art pavilion is the crowning achievement in the two countries’ event series, “Germany and China – Moving Ahead Together.”
