Battery technology is looking brighter (and more futuristic) than ever as researchers at MIT recently announced they have successfully engineered viruses to build both the positively and negatively charged ends of a lithium-ion battery. These virus-built batteries can be created cheaply using an environmentally benign process, tout the same energy capacity as state-of-the-art rechargeable batteries, and may one day be used to power everything from personal electronic devices to hybrid vehicles.

One of fifteen finalists in our Spring Greening Design Competition, this cozy looking chair was made by Camilla Hounsell Halvorsen, a Norway-based furniture designer. Dubbed the Drops chair, it features a four-legged stainless steel frame that holds an inner tube covered in recycled upholstery material. The inner tube isn’t attached to the frame so the chair can be adjusted to the desired position of the sitter, or it can be taken off and placed on the ground to be used as a pouffe. If you’re a fan of this design, show it some love and vote for it in our DIY design competition!

Phone Book Coffee Table

7 Apr

When we kicked off our Spring Greening DIY Design Contest we didn’t expect our intrepid innovators to take the call literally! We’re thoroughly impressed that Rodrigo Jaroseski of Porto Alegre, Brazil did just that and fashioned a remarkable corrugated coffee table out of several old phone books. Everyone seems to have a couple of these outdated directories collecting dust somewhere – every year in the United States alone 500 million directories are printed, and the E.P.A. estimates that they account for nearly 5% of total landfill waste. By carefully folding and gluing together the pages of several phonebooks, Rodrigo created an inspired re-use for these antiquated tree-pulp products. If you’re a fan of this design, cast your vote below!
