Coates Design is an architecture firm based in Seattle that specializes in sustainable design. Their vision: is that buildings, when thoughtfully designed, will uplift the spirit, nourish the mind and contribute to the health of our bodies while respecting the environment in which they are placed. I would certainly be uplifted if any of the spaces below belonged to me. :) Matthew Coates and his crew are clearly lovers of wood, concrete, and W I N D O W S!!

A Unique Modern Bathroom Design: CORTEN Sink

31 Mar

http://interiordesignsense.com/tag//

We recently received a highly interesting sink design. According to the explanation given to us by the project developers, CORTEN is a bathroom sink designed by a3studiomadrid, a design studio composed by Diego Redondo and Maria Gil. The product is being manufactured by Tuesta Furniture, a Spanish company. CORTEN is a design inspired by architecture and is defined by clean and straight lines. With a highly original appearance, the product is adaptable to a variety of minimalist modern bathroom designs. The project was achieved using solid oak wood and one can choose from several different finishes. Freshome readers, how do you feel about wooden bathroom furniture? Do you think it has a more appealing aesthetic effect than the “conventional” appliances?

Creative Office Inspired by Aircrafts in India by Kamat & Rozario Architecture

16 Mar

We received some photos and information of a highly original office design by Kamat & Rozario Architecture and located in Bangladore, India. Here is the full description from the designers: “Ananya Technologies was an experiment in using atypical materials. This was a workshop corporate office of a company that manufactures miniature electronic parts for defense aircrafts. The products manufactured here became an inspiration for the design of the space. The plan of the space was conceived as an integrated circuit board, which was an integral part of their products. The colour coded pipes crisscrossing the ceiling connect various hubs in the space and are reminiscent of the tracks in a circuit board. The pipes travel along the ceiling and vertically along walls to create a 3 dimensional idea of the circuit board and simultaneously double up as electrical conduits. The coloured pipes in the ceiling also helped in circumventing a false ceiling thereby reducing the cost significantly.

The client needed to document and archive each and every product they manufactured. For this they required huge storage which didn’t need to be readily accessible. They also required about 30% of the floor to be left bare and open for manufacture of larger components. We decided to lift the storage off from the floor and inhabit the space below it. A conference room was envisaged below a metal storage loft hanging from the ceiling. A corrugated MS sheet was suspended from the slab to serve as storage. This served a number of functions – a large amount of floor space got freed up, and the volume of the conference room was reduced enough for efficient air conditioning. It also avoided huge amount of cabinetry.”

Shelf-Pod: An Entire Japanese Home Lined with a Maze of Bookshelves

What do you do when you have a large book collection? And we mean a ridiculously large collection. Well, you could live in an entire house lined with bookshelves like this one! Designed by Japan’s Kazuya Morita Architecture Studio in Moriguchi City, the entire interior of the home, which has been dubbed Shelf-Pod, is lined with an extensive latticework of laminated pine board. The designers even created a mosque-like domed roof for the house since the homeowner’s book collection consists primarily of Islamic history texts.

London Olympic Stadium Could Be Replaced Needlessly With One More “Soccer-Friendly”

9 Feb

The 2012 London Olympics haven’t even happened yet and already plans are in the works to tear down one of the stadiums and build a new one in its place. You may have heard about the dispute between the Tottenham Hotspurs and West Ham United. In a nutshell, they’re fighting over the rights to the stadium after the Olympics, but a lot more is at stake than just who gets to call it their home field. If Tottenham secures the bid, they plan to tear it down and build up a new “soccer-friendly” stadium. New plans by KSS have been released for the Spur’s stadium, but it just seems like a massive waste to us!

Conceived as a future-forward update to the contemporary Chinatown, the Superstar will travel the globe, supplying its host cities with energy, commerce, and cultural activities.
