It has an artistic quality and plays with theme of fantasy and therefore feels a bit surreal. Andy Martin Studio

20 Oct

Gesamtkunstwerk. It’s about a totally integrated work of art, a holistic approach to design. Think about the architectural design of a building combined with interior design, furniture design, art and so on. Everything is considered for the whole. OK enough of the design lesson. Let’s look at this fab modern redesign, the latest residential project by Andy Martin Studio. It’s Andy’s family house in Notting Hill Gate. The existing 2 level mews house was redeveloped into a 4 level family home.  A simple historical facade  opens onto a space that it not expected. A space that is modern and considered, where solid plays against void, light against heavy, smooth against texture. But driving it all is the need for a family space, a workable albeit stylish home.

A Bit Playful & a Bit Deceptive: Splat Mirror

19 Apr

http://interiordesignsense.com/tag//

We recently received an interesting project from Kooyong Design, a young Irish furniture and product design studio run by Davin Larkin. According to the designers, “Splat is a bit playful, a bit deceptive and a bit outrageous but also functional! With its bold colours and striking appearance you will want to look twice in the mirror every day. Splat was developed from the idea of a drop of paint splashing on the floor combined with the idea of a cracked piece of glass. Combining the two ideas we came up with the striking appearance of Splat that works just as well on its own as it does in pairs and more. Splat has been laser cut out of Acrylic and hand assembled in our studio. It is currently available in three colours; red, orange and black.” Enjoy the splash of color below and let us know what you think of this idea!

“Muir” Wall Coat Hanger with Slot for Papers and Envelopes

30 Mar

http://interiordesignsense.com/tag//

If you are the type of person to misplace random bills, here is a way to get organized with ease. This wall coat hanger comes from Amenity Home and at a first glance looks just like an ordinary wooden coat rack. The designers however came up with the idea of adding an extra purpose. This is why the product has a special storage place for papers, bills, envelopes and even newspapers. We imagine this characteristic is very handy, especially when one is in a hurry and needs to drop something off rapidly. Placing a piece of paper in the support does not necessarily imply a fast finding, but ensures the object is safe. The “Muir” coat rack is available online here for $197 (5 Peg) or $233 (6 Peg, larger dimensions). Freshome readers, did you ever come up with an odd design furniture combo ?

Monocomplex

22 Mar

I’m always on the look out for new design talent and many of them are coming from groups, like Monocomplex from South Korea. These four young designers are creating new ideas in the realms of product design, furniture and lighting. Their collaborative efforts have created some of the most interesting modern pieces I’ve seen.

1. Icicle Lighting by Cho Jangwon
When winter comes, we can see icicles hanging.’ ICICLE lamp merges the functionality of a stool/table with a lamp.

2. Spool Lighting by Hwang Eunsang
I love the idea of a spool wrapped in string. And then there’s the idea of warmth associated from memories of moms and grannies sewing in the kitchen table. The illuminated aspect creates a beautiful silhouette.

3. Retro TV Lighting by Park Hyunwoo
This floor lamp takes the form of retro TV’s in Korea. It’s nostalgic yet refreshingly modern. I love the exposed structure – to see how each piece of wood connects to the other.

The Blob Sofa Appears to be Always on The Move

13 Feb

The Blob isn’t your average comics bad guy today as that’s the name of a modern sofa design currently on sale through Furniture Design Market in Norway. Designed by Francois Papastefanou, the Blob proposes us an interesting living room seating solution, a sofa that appears to be always on the move. The Blob has an irregular shape but then again we need some irregularity in our daily lives so why not go for such a couch idea? And it’s exactly that peculiar shape that gives us the impression the couch has decided to slowly move away from its determined position. What would make this design even better would be adding some modular action to the Blob. That way you could actually move each segment of the sofa the way you see fit. Via Furniture Design Market

Swedish Design Furniture by Svenskt Tenn

6 Feb

swedish-design-furniture-svenskt-tenn-modernist-sofa-1.jpg

This Swedish design furniture by Svenskt Tenn is an artful mix of modernist and heritage, old and new, color and pattern. Josef Frank and Estrid Ericsson founded the company and created a blended style boasting Viennese elegance and Swedish functionalism. Not your grandmother’s furniture, these sofas and chairs definitely call to mind that bygone era but with a decidedly modern edge. The funky, vibrant upholstery is trendy yet timeless, while the frames are clearly inspired by the classics, built to last with a look that will never go out of style. The sofas boast plush cushions and a double-spring system for the ultimate in comfort. The chairs, meanwhile, come in a variety of different shapes and details that would look great as an eclectic mix-and-match collection in the dining room or living area. More information on this design furniture is available by visiting Svenskt Tenn.

That’s right, Triumph Motorcycles and students from the Birmigham Institute of Art and Design have created a smart collection of homeware out of recycled motorcycle parts that looks just as good, if not better, than the original bikes did. The result is a line of stylish, unique and very cool household items ranging from bowls to hatstands and even a turntable.
