A’Design Awards – Your Claim To Fame!

25 Feb

UPDATE: 7 Days Left!

Steve Jobs said “Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition, everything else is secondary.” Finding the correct channels to promote our creativity or even get them recognized are very limited. Design Competitions are a good medium, but is recognition from peers and prize money the only push you need? The A’Design Award and Competition fills the void by highlighting, advertising and advocating good design, designers and design oriented companies. They have the knack of grabbing the attention of press, interactive medias, design critics, distributers and buyers for their award winners.

So besides your award winning design being presented at the A’ Design Museum and Gallery in Italy, they also offers an unique ecosystem for designers to sell their winning ideas to sponsor companies. Likewise the companies can bid for the competing design ideas and make offers to buy the designs!

ADesign Awards – Your Claim To Fame!

Registrations are still open and you can submit into 40 different categories, which include furniture, futurist design, vehicle and transport design, young design, lighting design etc. Timelines can be found here, Dates and Fees are here and find the answer to ‘What is A’Design?’ here.

My home renovation – bathroom ideas

22 Jun

I am just DYING to have the work on my house started, but we’ve had to redo the plans to try and save a small fortune so my husband can get an extra 16″ of height for his basement “man cave”. While our plans are being finalized once again, we’ve started the quest for interior and exterior finishes and we frankly don’t really know where to begin. It’s a pretty daunting task for 2 people who have never really done any renovations before (except my kitchen a few years ago). We’re going to need pretty much everything – a staircase, windows, exterior finishes, fireplace, bathroom fixtures, hardwood, tile and on and on… You guys help out our readers when they have design dilemmas so I thought maybe this time you could help me out. I am hoping you can give me suggestions on where to shop, design ideas etc. Since I am located in Ottawa some of the products should probably be relatively accessible locally (ie. staircase).

We also have another dilemma. This renovation is going to cost us WAY more than we initially thought, which means we’re not sure we can complete the finishes in all the rooms (and I’m not even talking about furnishing them – there’s talk about leaving the floors with only the sub-floor, completing only one bathroom…). This brings me to my next call for help. If anyone out there would like to help us with some of the finishes by offering great bargains for materials, even freebies (!!!) I’d LOVE to chat  (email me at desiretoinspirekim@hotmail.com). There would of course be blog mentions/publicity in return.

So today’s post is about bathrooms. We will have a master bedroom ensuite, another full bathroom upstairs, and a powder room next to the front entrance. (For a peek at the plans see this post, keeping in mind the layout of the bathrooms is totally up for grabs). I’d love to have some fun with the powder room and do something really industrial and I have a thing for black and white bathrooms so I hope one of the other bathrooms can be done in those colours. I went through my stash of bathroom photos and found some of my favourites. Any ideas/sources etc. that you can suggest, let me know in the comments or via email! Thanks!

You’ll never seek coziness in your furniture again when surrounded by members of the Lop Lab collections by Lop Furniture, which boast a sweet Icelandic design. Items of the Lop Lab are experimental pieces inspired by things such as animals, troll tales, and cold winter days while seeking innovative design ideas. What they all have in common though is excellent craftsmanship and superior quality. A lot of the pieces retain their own unique charm and can never be reproduced exactly because of the natural materials used, like Icelandic sheepskin, full grain saddle leather and massive oak. We urge you to visit Lop Furniture to find out more.

Playing with Volumes and Perceptions: Tregunter Apartment in Hong Kong

31 Mar

http://interiordesignsense.com/tag//

Designed by Davidclovers, this amazing crib located in Hong Kong seems to puzzle the senses. Found on Dezeen, the project is a renovation of a tower apartment overlooking the Victoria Harbor. Here is a short description from the architects: “Nestled amongst a forest of towers on Old Peak Road above Central Hong Kong, the Tregunter tower holds unique layered views of Victoria Harbour. The abundance of bay windows, structural walls and beams that are common to residential towers would appear to constrain the possibilities of the apartment. However, by turning constraints into opportunities, David Clovers re-works the volumes of this apartment by using the ceiling and the floor. Subtly elongating, pressing upward, and sloping downward, the ceiling produces variable sensations of compression and expansion – making the apartment seem larger than it is, drawing delicate lines that separate dining from living.

Skillfully dodging and maneuvering around air-conditioning units and structural beams, the ceiling integrates artificial light and various materials – re-orienting the apartment toward the exterior. The minimal use of wood and plaster shift the elevation of the apartment (typically on the walls) to the horizontal surfaces – enhancing the outward/upward thrust of the ceiling.” Freshome readers, are you fans of asymmetrical design ideas or do you prefer the more classic approaches?

An Interesting Approach to Residential Architecture: Dalene Cabin in Norway

23 Feb

Delen Cabin was designed by architect Tommie Wilhelmsen and is located in Østhusvik, Rennesøy island, Norway. This project was developed under the motto:  “Good architecture is a place that its never easy to leave”.  Its total surface is 120 square meters, which makes it perfect for a comfortable nature family retreat. The architecture of the residence is original and intriguing, featuring unexpected angles and curves. The association of wood, glass and rock creates great visual effects. The consequences- an appealing exterior design, interesting to observe in detail from every corner of the construction site. Once inside, the guest is welcomed by a unique mix of wood and concrete which, surprisingly, manages to create a cozy living area. The sober color palette and the minimalist furniture create an interesting ambiance and complete the otherwise traditional decor.
