Interior Design Sense

The old harbour zone of French city of Lyon was adorned with a fascinating orthogonal cube into which a giant hole was carved, creating the proper conditions for light, air circulation and views. The Orange Cube project combines spaces for commercial and cultural developments, like the Cardinal Group headquarters or the Design Showroom RBC. The sustainable architecture contains elements that work together to create a versatile space with offices, design showrooms and a large top-floor terrace with astounding views of Lyon, la Fourvière and Lyon-Confluence. Choosing orange paint, Jakob + Macfarlane Architects made a connection to lead paint, an industrial colour often used for harbour zones. The 5 levels of the structure are penetrated by a hole “piercing the building horizontally from the river side inwards and upwards through the roof terrace. In order to create the void, Jakob + MacFarlane worked with a series of volumetric perturbations, linked to the subtraction of three “conic” volumes disposed on three levels: the angle of the façade, the roof and the level of the entry. These perturbations generate spaces and relations between the building, its users, the site and the light supply, inside a common office program.”

Located in the luxurious surroundings of Campus Bay, South Africa, the villa you are about to admire is a surprising architectural masterpiece. Designed by Cape Town’s most beloved architect, Stefan Antoni Olmesdahl Truen Architects (SAOTA), the rental building was named First Crescent Villa. Showcasing a wonderful open space, with a lot of light caressing the interiors, the villa has a simple design that surprises through quality and carefully chosen materials used for building it. A large outdoor skylight further connects the building to the landscape and the huge windows allow the natural view to contrast with the impressive, contemporary interior. The creator and designer of this astonishing building sees it like “a minimalist home commanding a 270 degree view of Lions Head, Camps Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. All living spaces have a great connection to the covered or uncovered terraces. The living spaces are highly transparent to take full advantage of the views. The architecture is notable for its use of cantilevers, linear arrangement and limited palette of materials.”

The surprising Ribbon Vacation House is located in San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina. Designed by Argentinean architects G2 Estudio, the residence is the vacation destination for two Tahitian families who wanted to be able to spend their free time together in a wonderful setting. The house is a large, relaxing common space that makes the inhabitants feel at home every time they visit. Built on an area of 4,300 square feet, and having a usable surface of 396sqm, the Ribbon Vacation House accomplishes every need of the families, from ample relaxation spaces to extremely beautiful panoramas enjoyed by each member. The juxtaposition of volumes that compose the structure of the house allows the space to be divided into different spaces with different functions. Avoiding damage from earthquakes, the architects decided to reinforce the building with a concrete support system. The rustic stone and steel-frame of the outer volumes create a sensational look. The architects consider that: “With Ribbon House G2 Estudio close a small cycle of evolution in the search for housing types, and launches into new spaces for these architectural exploration, arguing that every expression of architecture should be unique and unrepeatable as the users are.”

The Meera House was designed by Guz Architects and is located on the island of Sentosa in Singapore. We consider it a daring and original project- after all, not many homes feature green spaces for every floor of the building. Here is a short description from the architects: The plots on the island of Sentosa are not large and neighboring buildings are built close to the sides of each house. Thus our strategy was to build a solid wall to each side neighbor to provide privacy where possible,  while creating a central light and stair well which would funnel the sea breeze through the centre of the building. 

The front and rear of the building meanwhile, terrace back allowing each storey to have visual or actual access to greenery. The intention was to try to allow each roof garden provided a base for the storey above allowing the layered effect to make each storey feel like it was a single storey dwelling sitting in a garden…..as much as we could do in the close confines of Sentosa island and with such a large building!! Designer Cody Stonerock is the mastermind behind this creatively composed chair. The Kurven Chair has drawn inspiration from the nautical sphere, allowing a comfortable seating experience and a modern, beautiful shape. The designer is a student at University of Cincinnati and one of his teachers gave him 10 weeks to create the concept of a chair and then construct it. And so the Kurven Chair was born: a surprising place to rest, made from a bentwood frame and leather upholstery. Imitating a hammock, the chair can be used with or without the leather upholstery, which can be removed or changed with the material of your choice. The leather has a canvas backside which prevents it to stretch more than it should. The designer explains how the construction of the chair works in your advantage: “The leather seat can easily be attached or detached from the chair. The leather is sewn on each end into loops. The loops are attached by being placed through slots in the wood and anchored with a dowel rod.”

My Bearded Pigeon is an Australian brand which stands for “love of vintage images and modern organic textiles”. Trick Bookcase is an unconventional modular furniture set especially created for small interiors. Found on Homedit, the unit occupies very little space and its functionality is double: it can be used as a small shelving unit or a bookcase, as well as a small table for two- chairs included! The uncommon furniture piece is very easy to assemble and to convert from one design to another. Made from wood, it has a minimalist appearance and is highly adaptable to almost any type of modern interior. We couldn’t help but noticing a negative aspect. Even though we appreciate the originality of this product, in most homes both of the items (bookcase and table) are required simultaneously. We imagine it is quite difficult -once the unit is used as a shelving system- to remove all the books and make it a table. What do you think?

House Carqueija eas designed by Bento e Azevedo Arquitetos Associados and is located in Brazil. As seen on Arch Daily, the residence stretches over an area of about 260,00 sqm and takes advantage of the beautiful natural landscape within which it is integrated. Here is more information on the project’s structure from the architects: With a simple and efficient plan, it is a ground floor house with 2 rooms, a chapel and a large and flexible social area, which integrate living, dining and tv room in a open space, linked to the outside area through a porch. In order to have the best orientation, in a tropical county, the house closes itself from the front street view, which is west, and opens into the backyard, creating a privative and integrated place. That way, on the front facade, architectural elements, as a narrow windows and a pare-soleil was used to protect the house against solar irradiation, while the back facade, on east side, completely integrate the inside with the outside, through large windows, sliding doors and a porch, connecting the house with the green area. This modern home is not just “well organized”. Its beautiful white facade, the generous pool and terrace as well as its interior design make it inviting to say the least.
