Lily Lamp was designed by Spanish company Yonoh for Fambuena and takes the elegance of the lily flower to a more playful level. The colorful pendant lamps have an impressive size and could become the focal point of a room. Their uncomplicated shape makes them suited for a wide variety of interiors with a modern touch. When the light is not on, one can look up and see the lilies in blossom. When opened, warm glow spills through the semi-transparent material creating cozy shades and a delightful atmosphere. Wow, beautiful decorative toilets and bidets! Some people choose to hide the toilet and bidet – and there certainly are some creative concealed toilet styles out there – and others, like Italian company Stile, prefer them to stand out and shine! The Mosaiko collection of handmade decorative toilets and bidets is a certain instant focal point. These contemporary Scandinavian pendant lights Octo by Finland’s Secto Design are edgy, but still evoke a sense of nature. Your current bedroom side table probably houses a lamp, an alarm clock and your night time glass of water. Have you ever thought of how to beautify your side table to compliment the bedroom décor? Your side tables can be matching or not, minimal or robust. Some prefer side tables that hold their collectibles, while some see it as a place to house a beautiful piece of décor. Whichever is your style, here are tips for making your bedroom side table beautiful.

• Choose the role of your side table: Your bed is usually the focal point of your bedroom. Decide how you use your side table (s). Do you only use them to hold a lamp, or do you keep books and important ‘arms length’ supplies at your bed side too? If you just want it for decoration, then choose one that fits with the décor and compliments the style of your bed. If you want it for function too, assess how much should be housed here and what can go on a bookshelf, cabinet or other storage area.

• Accentuate your side table with décor: If you prefer to use your side table for display, choose décor that won’t hinder your sleeping. For example an expensive vase on a side table in a home that has two large dogs that sleep in the bed every night is not a good idea. You may opt for wall sconces that hang from either side of the bed as your décor, and keep the side table for the alarm clock and a family photo. Determine how your bedroom will benefit from the addition or sometimes the subtraction of one bed side table.

• How many bed side tables do you need: In a perfect world of huge bedrooms, two large bed side tables are ideal.  In the real world where bedrooms are smaller than we’d like, it may be more feasible for only one side table to adorn your bedside. Remember, side tables don’t have to match. Consider using different heights or even different types of side tables. If you can unite them together with a common theme, like matching lamps, then the actual tables will flow effortlessly in with the décor.

• Beautify with storage: To make your side table beautiful and add storage consider choosing one with drawers and/or shelving.  These are perfect for storing a few books, reading glasses and the remote controls. If you prefer to have all of your storage hidden, consider using under bed storage along with your bed side tables. From rolling plastic sweater bins that fit under your bed to gorgeous baskets, under bed storage is often forgotten.  This will free up your side table for only holding and displaying what it needs.

Bed side tables are the balancing feature of the bed and they make your bedroom a complete concept.  Whether you choose to use yours for function and/or décor, the side table can do it effortlessly. For the holidays add seasonal touches to your tables to bring festivity into the bedroom. Don’t neglect your side table, they are the forgotten gem in the bedroom that can make it shine!

You and your living room are happier because you have just acquired a flat screen television.  Although, you seem to be having a small problem, everything around the television seems not to work. The furniture no longer faces the right direction, the wall art is being blocked, and the armoire you’ve placed the television in is too big.   These are all common decorating dilemmas when you acquire a flat screen television.  Read on to see how you can keep that television and make the rest of your room look beautiful around your new addition to the family.

• Plan for space: One of the beautiful advantages to having a flat screen television is the ability to view it from many angles of the room. This same advantage is its disadvantage when it comes to placing furniture in the room.  The challenge is that you can’t have obstacles that are within the line of sight of the television.  Stand back in all angles of the room and assess what furniture is too tall and plan for space around it. Another trick is to stand at the television and look back at the room. You will easily see what is obstructing the view and space.

• Highlight the wall: Your television can blend or it can be the focal point.  Most people want it to be the focal point as it costs a lot of money, and you want everyone to see it! For you, painting an accent wall that your television is hung or placed in front of will draw emphasis to this wall.  If you are one that would like the television to blend, consider housing your television in a piece of furniture that can be closed, such as an armoire or entertainment center.

• Viewing height: Depending on the height you choose to view your television will dictate how to add artwork or decorative items around it. For those that want it stand mounted on a low console, you will be able to optimize more of the wall behind it for artwork.  While if you decide to mount it on the wall, the television can compete with artwork – which can be distracting. For larger rooms that have a long viewing range, a wall application will work better. While smaller, narrower spaces will benefit from the lower console.

• Hanging artwork: If you have high ceilings, artwork placed above the line of television sight viewing is a good idea.  Consider making the artwork simple, and more abstract. Artwork that has physical content will cause television viewers to concentrate on the artwork. For shorter ceilings, but longer walls, consider putting small collections of artwork, paintings, photographs etc… to the side(s) of your television.  Whichever you design preference, try to let the television compliment the space, or be left on its own.  For visual interest for wall mounted televisions add wainscoting or build decorative architectural niches into the wall.

Your flat screen television can be a welcomed addition if you can determine how to decorate around it. Before you buy your television take these tips into consideration.  Remember, the smaller the room, the smaller television that is needed. Often time’s people buy too large of a television for the space, and viewers can get headaches, and the picture will also appear pixilated if the viewing distance isn’t enough. Placing a flat screen television above a fireplace or on an accent wall will give visual interest that may need additional décor. You decide and make your television a welcomed addition to your home. Add some wow to your walls with these amazing engraved stone walls by Lithos Design. We recently received this amazing interior design project from Sybarite, an architectural and design studio founded in 2002. Here are some extracts from the press release they sent us:  “This complete refurbishment of a four floor / four bedroom Victorian townhouse in West London’s Brackenbury Village required  sensitivity. The brief was to completely gut this wreck of a house and create a very liveable and practical home for this busy family with three young children. Although great design was on the wish list, the house mainly had to become a comfortable family home maximising the usable space and storage. The interior intervention juxtaposes old and new, respecting the Victorian heritage while applying a contemporary intervention which works seamlessly without jarring. The original staircase runs like spine through house, its minimal restoration allowing you to read its age so that it becomes the focal point against which a simple, elegant refurbishment is contrasted. Tying together the modern aspects of the house is the use of concrete, which is utilized in various places, polished as flooring and shuttered to clad several fireplaces throughout the house.

An important element of the brief for this area was to maximise storage so that the whole family could easily share this space without it becoming too cluttered. Deep, floor to ceiling lacquered cupboards run along one whole wall, providing ample space to pack away toys and games so the room can be easily transformed from child’s playroom to relaxed entertaining area for grownups.”

We really enjoy it when we find a residential project that has to do with art. Sure, you could say that most buildings relate to art one way or another, but Villa VH en T was especially developed to house the extensive art collection belonging to the owner. This beautiful and creative home comes from Beel & Achtergael Architects, has a total surface of 862 m2 and is located in Flanders, Belgium. The plan was to create a “small world” by organizing all the rooms on the ground floor U-shaped around the outdoor patio. The living room is the focal point of the whole residence and also the place where guests can gather around, have fun and talk about art while actually admiring it. Floor to ceiling windows and walls painted in white transform this architecture project into a “spotless” (to be read “without fault”) home whose features are worth discovering step by step. Sometimes it’s our “imperfections” that make us worth knowing, and by the same token, these contemporary “cracked” tiles from Refin are worth a closer look.
