Interior Design Sense

Rowena, a Freshome.com fan just moved to a new place, and she decided to email us an ask for some interior design advice for her space. After I’ve read her email I’ve got an idea …to post the pictures on the website and ask for opinions from our readers. So I’ve asked Rowena to send me some pictures and a few words about her place …

When I rented it, the furniture that you see came with it. As with all rented home, we cant do much when it comes to painting, hammering etc. The window that you can see covered with the curtain is not really functional. As in, it opens to a balcony that was later roofed. I cannot seem to re-arrange the furniture around to make it look decent. I do intend to buy a couch or a sofa set. What I buy is depending on how to arrange the room & I would like to buy a center piece rug as well. I do like to read & would like a little corner with a chair and the tall lamp. Maybe in the wall corner of the window on the right, I could put the shelved corner stand, for little show pieces. I don’t intend to buy anything expensive just something that does not look cheap and yet makes the place look really peaceful. – Rowena

Here on Freshome you’ve seen a lot of themed bedrooms for kids. It is true, fairy tales, castles and princesses provide a wide range of ideas for bedrooms, but today, we would like to show you something new: hearts. You’ve seen them drawn on every teenager’s diary, piece of paper or bumper sticker. And it’s a known fact: young ladies love hearts. Which is why these six bedrooms below all feature heart themed furniture. The colors are also typical for teen girls (pink, light green, yellow, red, baby blue). Chairs, pillows, bed covers, nothing escaped the mighty heart-shaped plan.Some of these interiors are a bit too crowded for our tastes, but then again, it is not us who the manufacturers target.

To be honest I hate to see cables all around the house, but with so much electronics in our lives, the cables are an inescapable fact. When wireless electricity will be available all these cable problems will be solved, but who knows when something like this will be available ? Fortunately, there are ingenious people who are dedicated to solving this problem by creating decorative objects that precisely camouflage those cables that are almost impossible to hide behind furniture. An example of such an idea is this bird and leaves solution that can be attached to a cable and give a funny twist to our room. These accessories can be purchased at Pa-Design, but they are so simple that some of you might actually find a DIY solution. – Via – PA

It’s true, most of the people out there can’t get enough mirrors. But is this a reason to create mirrored furniture? It’s up to you to find the answers to this question,  but in the mean time we would like to show you some of the positive examples of what this type of furniture has to offer. Classy and elegant, the items below can really bring up the aesthetic value of an interior. We enjoy the fact that they are not too flashy, which is actually the first thing that comes to mind when you thing of a reflective furniture item. We think it’s all in the images they reflect. In the pictures below, you will notice classy arrangements and mellow colors, which go great with this type of unusual designs. We are waiting for you reply on these items. Ekateryna Sokolova is a young designer from Kiev, Ukraine, with works in the field of furniture and industrial design. Today we would like to present an unusual washbasin, a project called “Iris”, due to its shape correspondence with the elegant flower. Here is what Ekateryna stated about this design: “The idea is that the wash-basin is manufactured from sheet material, corian or metal. Thanks to these materials the basin becomes visually light weight and elegant and resembles a flower, at the same time retaining its strength. The sheet is bent in such manner that a functional shelf is created, where towels, accessories, and cosmetics are kept.” It would sure be interesting to have one of these around the house- perhaps in an environment with similar shaped elements- in order to create a light atmosphere. -via 3rings

This may not be the most comfortable chair in the world, but you have to admit the concept behind it is pretty cool. The Wolfgang Keyboard Bench comes from designer Nolan Herbut, who’s keyboards experiments also feature a lamp made out of keys. Getting back to our chair, at a first glance I had the feeling that it is some sort of fancy, expensive crystal furniture item, due to the way it sparks in the light. But the fact that is made out of letters, numbers and question marks is even better than that.The only draw back  is the fact that it could get really uncomfortable in a short while. And it is not all that hard to picture how standing on a few keyboards stuck together should feel. However, we think this is a pretty fun item to have around. It could also serve as a typing machine simulator when things get boring around the house. -via Nerd Approved

Here is an inspiring way of putting 93 square meters to good use. This freshly redecorated and renovated apartment is not that big, yet in the pictures it almost looks double it size. This is due to the fact that designing it did not only take into consideration aesthetic features, but practical ones as well. The white walls give the feeling of space and the color can be combined with any type of furniture. Good taste was brought to the the highest levels in this apartment and everything look fit in to its right place. Black is also present, whether it is in fancy wallpapers or interesting carpets.  There is also a pink room in the house, with a fresh feel.  The kitchen and bathrooms are all-equipped. Stairs, flower arrangements and small decorating items cheer up the place and make it very cozy. -via Alvhemmakleri

When it comes to home audio systems, a bumpin’ subwoofer is a key part of the listening experience. However subwoofer cabinets can be hard on the eyes, which is why we like the Automan 500, an eco-subwoofer made entirely from a recycled tires. The chic concealed subwoofer is one of 18 finalists in this year’s Greener Gadgets Competition.

More and more companies today go over their heads in order to promote -an let people know they are doing so- a sustainable environment. However, in the long run this turns out to have positive effects, so who are we to complain about the subliminal effects? We hope in this situation there are none, which is why we decided to present this interesting idea in the first place. Located in Reggio Emilia, in northern Italy, and designed by Francesca Signori this eBARRITO store is 100% organic and its furniture was improvised using cardboard. Here is a better explanation from the official web site:  “The new eBARRITO stores consist of modular, double-pressed cardboard walls equipped with wavy-style shelving – an  effect achieved with interlocking tubular sections and modular lamps resembling bird-cages.” We really appreciate this sort of designs and hope to show you more similar ideas in the future.

Located in Cainsdorf, Germany, The Concrete House comes from Atelier st architects and stands out primarily due to its exterior design. An original shape, the house features large concrete blocks that seem to blend in order to form the walls of the residence. In between them, large windows are asymmetrically placed and allow beautiful views of the surrounding areas from every room of the house. The interior is mostly decorated in white and red, with surprising furniture elements and an overall modern feel. An interesting looking pendant lamp seems to dominate the entrance hall and a staircase with a wooden finish connects the rooms. Take a look and tell us what you think.
