Ingenious Cardboard Packaging Folds to Fit Parcels of Any Shape

4 May

sustainable design, green design, UPS, packaging, green, eco, cardboard, paper, shipping, is it green, sung

Excessive packaging is one of our top pet peeves here at Inhabitat, so we were really inspired by this flat cardboard sheet that is capable of conforming to the shape of any object, saving a bundle on wasteful filler. Designed by Patrick Sung, the packaging design concept features triangulated perforations that allow it to bend around odd forms. This could also save on fuel for shipping, since all of that wasted box filler is eliminated.

Hydro Lance Recycles Jets into High-Speed Planeboats

30 Apr

sustainable design, green design, hydro lance, alternative transportation, recycled airplane boat, jet engine boat, pontoon airplane ship

Here at Inhabitat we’ve seen our fair share of airplanes repurposed into incredible new forms, but this heavy-duty recycling plan takes the cake. A company called Hydro Lance proposes to transform old, obsolete aircraft into high-speed ocean vessels by replacing their wings with narrow pontoons. An old 727-200 could be converted into a high-speed, ultra-stable passenger ferry capable of traveling at a speed of more than 120 knots (nearly 140 mph).

The Zenergy House is a 1950’s remodel that delivers high on sustainability and low on energy use — net zero to be exact — thanks to the use of super-efficient green building strategies and solar panels on the roof. Built as a prototype to showcase the sustainable potential of an existing home, the 2,450 square-foot house with 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms opened its doors to the public for the first time earlier this month, and Inhabitat was on the scene to check it out. Read on for a first look at this stunning green renovation!

The Hester Street Fair Brings Local Shopping to the LES This Weekend!

19 Apr

And Inhabitat will be there…

Hester Street Fair, Hester Street Market, Suchin Pak, Ron Castellano, Manhattan's Brooklyn Flea, Hester Street Flea, local lower east side event

Calling all NYC Inhabitat readers — come join us this weekend at the grand opening of the Hester Street Fair in the Lower East Side! Inhabitat HQ is located smack in the middle of the lower lower East Side of Manhattan (south of Delancey), and while we love our neighborhood’s quiet charm, we couldn’t help but noticed that our area is been a bit – lacking – shall we say, in community events. That’s why we are beyond thrilled that the brand new Hester Street Fair is kicking off this weekend, April 24th in the abandoned lot between Seward Park and the high school basketball courts on Essex Street — right across the street from Inhabitat central! We’re very excited to say that we’ll be taking part in the fair with a little booth of our own. We’ll be selling organic Inhabitat wares, some handmade eco jewelry from our shop, and doing a raffle to give away a fabulous prize (stay tuned), so be sure to come check out our booth and say ‘Hi’!

The conference glossed over some of the usual sustainable fanfare, but surprisingly managed to dig a little deeper into today’s environmental issues and share some realistic insights.
