Cassettes PMP Are So Reto And Cool!

2 Sep

Debating with a colleague of mine on what inspires designers, we concluded that since 90 to 95 % of designs (in any field) have already been created, inspiration comes from the ones that already exist. Like I know for a fact that many of you readers come to Yanko Design to be inspired, and during those Random Searches, the Cassette Tape inspired an idea thus the eTape born! Whatever the reason behind it, I love the refinements and in-sync designing. It’s the era of touchscreen and detailing, both of which are reflected in the product. So basically this goes a notch up to being retro (which is in demand now-a-days) looking yet modern in functionality.

Reader request – masculine decor

2 Sep

Reader request time! This one comes from Kristín: “My best friend just moved in to his new fab flat, and here’s the best part: He’s letting me decorate it! Ive been searching some picture for inspiration, and I was thinking something masculine in grey-blue colours. I still havn’t found anything though, so I was hoping you might have some pictures?” I don’t think masculine has to be blue and grey so I went through my stash and found some spaces (mostly living rooms and a couple bedrooms) that I personally think would generally appeal to the average guy, that aren’t necessarily bathed in “manly” colours.

Bucky, Foglie, Tabard Lights From Pallucco

31 Aug

Italian company Pallucco haas always made an impression with their innovative design trajectory and proved time and time again that they are not averse to experimentation. Their Bucky, Foglie, and Tabard lighting units exudes an avant-garde sensibility by bidding adieu to symmetry. Bucky resembles a kite and pays homage to architect Richard Buckminster “Bucky” Fuller, where as Foglie (“leaves” in English) is inspired by nature. Interestingly the third in the line up, Tabard seeks inspiration from something as mundane as a seamless overcoat!

Debuting nearly two years ago, gDiaper became the world’s first flushable diaper. Meeting rave reviews from mothers and fathers who were conflicted with the extra work that came with cloth diapering, and the endless piles of dirty diapers toppling over in the planet’s landfills, the gDiaper was a perfectly packaged godsend to the eco-conscious parent. Since launching their first product in 2008, the gDiaper collection has expanded turning out gCloth washable diaper inserts, fashionable new gPant styles, and the latest addition to the line, biodegradable gWipes baby wipes. An incredible endeavor that has grown to become an eco-powerhouse, we decided it was time to catch up with Kim Graham Nye, co-founder of gDiapers. Read ahead for our five questions with Kim, who gives us the scoop on how gDiapers got its start and what Kim credits as her inspiration for these planet saving products!

Beautiful Boxes Made from Repurposed Vintage Circuit Boards

The complicated connections exhibited in circuit boards definitely give way to a medium that’s perfect for futuristic creations. But there is one man out there who is more interested in taking those boards back in time. With an artistic vision and a pair of skilled hands, artist Theo Kamecke is repurposing old circuit boards into exquisitely decorated interior accents. More than just a collage of broken boards, each of Kamecke’s pieces have been painstakingly crafted, drawing inspiration from ancient cultures. With their intricate patterns and polished aesthetic, many of his pieces could be easily claimed as relics of the Byzantine Empire.

‘One Light Only’ Lighting Collection At London Design Festival 2010

28 Aug

British designer, Lee Broom will exhibit the ‘One Light Only’ lightning collection at the London Design Festival 2010. The entire collection is strikingly distinguishable and makes quite an impression which is not surprising since its source of inspiration is Art Deco jewelry and fashion photography from the late 1970’s. The jewel-like gem faceted exterior lighting shell and the subtle matt finish white interior juxtaposes beautifully and lends an air of unabashed grandeur to the entire collection.

Reader request – kitchen islands

27 Aug

Here’s a reader request that came to us a little while ago (sorry, I wish I had time to do these posts more often) from Michelle:
I’m currently having my kitchen re-designed and built from re-claimed wood. The texture of these re-fashioned door fronts is incredible. The process is an evolving one and will eventually involve a re-do of the kitchen island as well. I plan to put a small stainless sink (round) in the island. Back in April (I think) you had a photo of an island done in re-claimed wood with chrome carts placed underneath for an wonderful mix of industrial warmth (** photo below from nuevo-estilo.es). I have purchased an old (100 years + door with the original blue paint) that will be cut (yes, it will hurt to cut it in half) and used as each end of the island (the short ends). Beyond this plan, the rest of the design is an open book. I wonder if you can post some island inspiration that will help and that might allow me to think outside the box even more when it comes to how to best utilize the space inside or under the island effectively (storage & cost that is).”

I went through my stash of kitchen photos and grabbed a bunch of kitchen islands that I find intriguing. Hopefully something will inspire you Michelle, although maybe just shoving metro carts under it is a quick/simple/cheap solution. (I’d like to point out that I noticed a few islands with storage for wine which is awfully smart considering I hate most wine racks and have my meager wine collection stashed under my kitchen sink).

Earthy Kitchens by Cesar

21 Aug

What better inspiration for a kitchen than nature itself? At least, that is designer Gian Vittorio Plazzogna’s approach to kitchen design. These fabulous earthy kitchens from Italian company Cesar are natural yet contemporary, dishing out the best is both worlds.

Elegance is the word that comes to mind when we imagine the Kalea kitchen. The saw-cut oak shows slight buzz marks, giving it a distinctive patters and a rustic charm. Measuring just 12mm thick, the cabinet doors are ultra light both in look and feel. Steel-framed open shelves modernize the design.

Adding a little more fun into the mix, the Kora kitchen “doesn’t surrender to elegance in detail,” according to Cesar. This earthy kitchen is free from hardware, all you see is wood. This configuration features an extra-long extension that expands your working and eating space.

For more details on the Kalea and Kora kitchens, go to Cesar.
