Sublime Contemporary Residence Inspired by Traditional Japanese Architecture

4 Feb

Our friends at Decoist have showcased a beautiful, modern home, with a pinch of traditional Japanese influences. Inspired by the former traditional Japanese house that used to rise in the middle of the uncommonly shaped lot, the T House generously uses the available space to the maximum. Designed by Kazuya Morita Architecture Studio, the distorted pentagonal structure is located in Tsushima City, a small village in the vicinity of Nagoya, Japan. The young couple residing here wanted a modern home with comfortable features that would remind them of their Japanese heritage without having to give up space or aesthetics. Five main structural walls separate the indoor living areas under an uncommonly shaped roof. A dome-shaped ceiling, dressed in wood, covers the bright interiors. Natural light coming from every angle is ensured by the large windows. Japanese white plaster was used to create the round corners seen around the house and all the interiors use traditional wooden construction methods. The fortunate combination between old and new has left this particular residence with a gorgeous interior design, while the exterior respectfully blends in with the neighborhood.

Modern Residence Overlooking the North Bay by Prentiss Architects

3 Feb

With an amazing structure that combines stone, wood and glass, this next beautiful residence comes from Prentiss Architects. The house is located in San Juan Island, Washington State and it was named The North Bay Residence. Beautiful and natural colours were used to create a connection to the surroundings. Stone was combined with wood to create an interior design that would soothe and comfort the family living here. Large windows bring the sunshine in and allow a panorama of the natural beauty surrounding the home. The wood chosen for the furniture complements the interior design and lots of lights were used to create a fresh atmosphere. Terraces offer a complete panorama of the bay just like the large windows allow the residents to retreat inside and enjoy the view whenever the weather does not allow the full outside experience.

Charming Victorian Makeover with a Welcoming Interior Design

1 Feb

A Victorian terrace house in the heart of Paddington needed a makeover and what resulted from the work of Stanic Harding Architecture and Interiors you can see below: a beautiful and modern structure, that retained the original Victorian facade, but opened it to a new world. The backside of the building faces north and offers beautiful views of the surrounding neighbourhood. Here are a few words from the architect: “The project was an exercise in exploring the contemporary reworking of the standard terrace model, within the confines of heritage constraints, while accommodating the needs of a young family. The main street entrance was relocated to the new portion of the building. This provided a strong circulation spine from which all other parts of the house are accessed. The children’s bedrooms are accessed from the entry area with a further stair linking to the master bedroom suite and study on the upper level. Visitors are brought down into the main living areas of the house as directly as possible via the open wide stair within the vertically oriented entry volume.” While the entertaining room runs from one side of the building to the other, the space needed to be opened to the outdoor space, creating an indoor/outdoor passage that fills the room with fresh air. A built-in sofa softens the step down in the living room and sets of stairs make the connection between the floors.

London Google Office By Scott Brownrigg Interior Design

31 Jan

Google has the coolest workspaces hands down and the new Google office in London also proves that work and play isn’t mutually exclusive to each other. Inspired by the famous Brighton beach in the UK, the interiors pay tribute to popular Brit icons by incorporating dodgem cars, red telephone booths, beach huts and giant dice into the work area. Designed by Scott Brownrigg Interior Design, the 40,000 sq ft office can accommodate over 300 staff and seeks to make Google one of the most desirable place in the UK and from the looks of it, they have achieved their goal.

Incredible Black&White Hand Drawn Illusions by Charlotte Mann

28 Jan

Why should walls remain static and dull? On Freshome we try to gather a large variety of solutions that can transform a regular interior into a vivid work of art. For today we have a special suggestion. Charlotte Mann is a talented British artist who became famous due to her fascinating wall drawings and drawn room installations. Her work includes drawings of “rooms in room”, created with a black market on a white background. The scenes are characterized by a large density in details and- as one can see in the photos- by a scale of 1:1. Charlotte not only creates art installations for shows and presentations, but is also involved in several other projects (in 2008 she created wall drawings for the School of Life class room). From where we’re standing, her work looks absolutely amazing. We featured this post on our blog, as we believe this idea could be taken forward and applied to home decors. So Freshome readers, bring out your markers and put that creativity to work!

Uncommon Japanese Home Design in Nagano: Villa K

25 Jan

This is definitely not an example of typical Japanese home designing. Villa-K was developed by Cell Space Architects and is located in Karuizawa, Nagano. Situated on a hilltop, this residence did not have to deal with space constraints, which is why its overall appearance could remind one of a typical modern American home. Built around a central sustaining pillar, Villa K is made out of four floors built on different levels. Windows connect the four otherwise separate volumes and offer the owners a 360 degree panorama of the surrounding landscape. The interior design is minimalist and inspirational. The open floor plan allows an abundance of natural light and provides a few great places for socializing. We particularly like the storage cabinets situated below the widow levels, as they are very practical and don’t obstruct the views. Have a look at the photos and let us know if you see other inspiring decorating elements.

Friendly Dental Office with Baroque Design Influences in Bucharest

21 Jan

For those of you thinking of opening up a dental office, we have an interesting project for analysis today. Royal Dental is a Dental Clinic designed by Stefan Lazar & Adrian Hanas and located in Pipera, Bucharest, Romania. Here is the description we received from the project developers: Royal Dental Clinic was an ambitious project in all respects. Finding a concept to translate the idea of excellence into dental imaging was a challenge that we accepted, proposing a simple but effective solution. Combining the latest technology with experience and professionalism, we reinvented the classic style, a characteristic of boutique-like premises, thus creating a friendly ambiance. The simple chromatic design emphasizes on the elegant Baroque decoration in the reception of clients area and to an overall feeling of order n areas of management and treatment. Find it appealing enough for a dental inspection?  (photos: Andi Popescu, presentation film: Catalin Balasa, concept: Razvan Savu )

C. Jere Everywhere!

17 Jan

I borrowed Mad Men (seasons 1-3) from my grandparents a few months ago, and let me just tell you, I’ve been HOOKED ever since!  This isn’t the first time an MG has blogged about the set design from this addicting AMC show, but there is one element from the set, that hasn’t been pointed out here yet.

The Curtis Jere wall sculpture that you see above the sofa in the photo below really caught my eye for two reasons- 1) it’s amazing and 2) I’ve seen it many times before but just now discovered that it’s a vintage piece.

These pieces of wall decor are not just things of the past (50’s, 60’s, 70’s) …they are incredibly hot right now!  C. Jere pieces are being sold on 1st Dibs and Ebay and according to Elle Interiors-  ”the value of (Curtis Jere) wall sculptures is increasing all the time and should prove a great investment.” You’ll also notice that a bunch of designers as of late have incorporated his sculpture into their projects.

{Sterling Cooper’s former lobby}

Here’s the skinny on these fabu sculptures-

-They were first created in the 50’s by Jerry Fells and Curtis Freiler.

-They are hand-made and constructed out of metal.

-They come in abstract designs and also scenic designs.

Design inspirations from Poland

12 Jan

We received the following email recently from Ewelina: I am a young interior designer from Poland (Europe), taking my first steps in designing. It’s not easy in my country to change peoples’ mind and attitude as far as interior design is concerned. Many people still don’t care how they live, but hopefully it’s changing, slowly but still it is. Ewelina sent along photos of 2 of her projects which I’d love to share with our readers. (Check out the second one, my favourite, after the jump).

First set of photos is my latest project of a living room combined with kitchen. It’s an old apartment, so it required to be change almost entirely. The only thing that hasn’t been changed so much, is the kitchen. Before the renovation the kitchen had olive-green colour, so that the room seemed to be sad and dark. Thanks to the great material that it is made of (oak) I decided to change only the colour, despite it would be much easier and cheaper to make a new kitchen. All the shelves where hand-painted!. It took a lot of work form my carpenter :) The living space has a silk curtains and cushions, and a silver and glass accessories, such as table and the bracket next to the door. One of my favourite thing in this interior is a crystal table lamp, it gives romantic, warm light.
