47 Park Avenue

5 Mar

Instead of doing my usual blog favourites of late post today, at the last minute I decided to instead feature one really inspiring blog instead. I heard about 47 Park Avenue a while back via an email from one of its creators, Michael, an owner of London based locations company Shoot Factory. Michael and his partner Jonathan purchased 47 Park Avenue in May of last year, a stunning home (with 3 reception rooms! 5 bedrooms!) that was desperately in need of some wallpaper removal, paint jobs, walls knocked out and pretty much a complete overhaul. They’ve been working very hard to get their home out of the 50′s and into the new millennium and while still a work in process, what has been accomplished so far is incredible. The vintage furniture and lighting they have sourced is all TO-DIE-FOR, and everything being painted black and white is just right-on. And their dogs are too cute! Their blog and the progress on their home is a must-follow. (I had to include some before photos so you get the full effect of the transformation).

Detroit was one of the US cities hit hardest by the recession, and this winter it finds itself with 18,000 individuals without a home – a quarter of whom are children. To help these individuals achieve some level of comfort in a dire situation, Veronika Scott, a junior at the Center for Creative Studies, designed a heated, waterproof jacket that turns into a sleeping bag at night. But best of all? Scott is employing the homeless themselves to produce the jacket, providing jobs and imparting valuable skills to these people in need.

Rainy days and rubbish skips

4 Dec

My weekends are being devoured by new old house jobs. The painters start on Monday and to ensure our weekend is action packed my husband has hired a rubbish skip for the week. Think of me as the rain pelts down, lugging stones and rubbish from the backyard and removing old flyscreens and strange bits of timber nailed to walls for unfathomable reasons. The next old house before video is up on my page as well as a few of my recent thrift  and secondhand store finds like my new murano glass bowl on a thrifted ikat. That glass is almost edible! Yum!

Delicious Wave Microwave Oven Moonlights as a Lamp

23 Nov

We’re living through some harsher economic times and even home appliances have it tough. In order to survive day-to-day life they’re forced to get second jobs and make sacrifices. But seriously speaking, the Delicious Wave Microwave Oven will not only work as a regular microwave during the day but it also help you illuminate your kitchen and/or dining area. The Delicious Wave Microwave Oven will make popcorn now or keep food warm for yoy, only to act as a handy lamp thereafter, so you would probably use it around the clock. The concept is very interesting so we can only hope it will be picked up by Electrolux later down the road. We also hope that the Delicious Wave Microwave Oven will use microwaves only when heating up our next meal and not when bringing some light to our kitchen. Via Yanko Design

Wheelchair Only For Transfers

14 Sep

The caregiver for an invalid or a patient is one mighty soul! He or she needs to be physically and mentally strong to offer impeccable services to their ward. One of the most physically draining jobs is to carry and transfer the patient from the bed to the toilet or even to a chair. The IX Transfer System is a wheelchair intended for such short distance transfers. It’s more to be used in communal spaces such as a hospital and works both automatic and manual. Indeed, a very different orientation for a wheelchair!

I’ve never been much of a wallpaper guy myself although I did see plenty of such intelligently designed solutions for covering your walls. I am though a tech guy and therefore couldn’t pass the opportunity to show you the Living Wall, an interactive wallpaper that will make your otherwise boring wall a lot more interesting. As you can see from the images below, the Living Wall offers you light, color, and then more color. And everything changes once you touch it, every time! In fact you can even play your favorite tunes by touching the Living Wall and even send a SMS message to your special someone with a simple swipe. Would you try the Living Wall yourself or would you stick to regular paint jobs like yours truly? Via High-Low Tech

Top Home Improvement Retailer Home Depot hit by Recession

27 Feb

Top home improvement retailer Home Depot Inc said per-share profit would fall for a third consecutive year in 2009 as the recession and softer U.S. housing market eat into sales.  The company has been hurt as fewer of its customers are buying new homes and spending money on repairs and remodeling. Home Depot posted a net loss of $54 million, or 3 cents a share, for the fourth quarter ended February 1, compared with earnings of $671 million, or 40 cents a share, a year earlier. Home Depot is also cutting 7,000 jobs as it shutters its Expo Design Center chain and trims corporate costs. – Via

The Pasinetti House: Restoring an old work of timeless art

24 Feb

the-pasinetti-house

Named after its first Italian owner and having been designed by the famous Romanian architect Haralamb Georgescu, the Pasinetti House in Beverly Hills is steeped in rich tradition and great history. And that’s exactly why the arduous task of restoring this neglected real estate jewel was assigned to expert restoration architect Aaron Torrence. The resulting structure is a flawless blend of old designing principles and modern flair, that adds glass for better ventilation and enhances the wooden interiors. Looking fabulous on a hill side with its simple box–like structure, it uses the huge space inside to make it a complete delight once again. Looks like one of the best “facelift” jobs in a while, isn’t it? – via

French Stimulus Program Preserves Historic Buildings

9 Feb

Charles Laughton as the Hunchback of Notre Dame

We have appropriated Steve Mouzon’s line “The Greenest Brick is the One That’s Already in the Wall” and have noted that the skills needed to restore our heritage buildings are the type of green jobs that will be needed for almost every building in the country. The French get this, and are spending 15% of their stimulus program funds on fixing their heritage. …
