Innovative Bookshelf, Boldness Pinned on Your Wall

21 Mar

There is absolutely no doubt that sex sells like nothing else on the planet and is the most searched item on the Internet. Designer Arun Kumar Francis has taken that obsession a step further and nailed it quite stylishly on the living room in the form of a cool little bookshelf. The bold and innovative design borrows quite obviously from the three letter word and the design has a very uncomplicated and ergonomic feel about it. You can of course store all kinds of books in there, but maybe a version of the ‘Kamasutra’ would go perfectly with all the sexiness in the air. Isn’t it?

Freeing Up Space: How to Get Rid of Clutter

1 Mar

Decorating is a lot more than just getting all the fancy stuff from the nearest store and throwing them inside, without any sense of order or form. It is not about how much you can cramp into the given space, but is more like the way you do it to accentuate the beauty of the home with what’s available. Failing to understand this, one often tends to clutter their homes hoping that use of excess accessories will actually bring beauty to the room. On the contrary, it makes your home feel suffocating. Here are a few ways on how you can get rid of the mess and move towards gorgeous interiors.

#1 Stuff you no longer use in one way or another

If you are not using something since long and feel that you will not use it anytime in the future, then just throw it out ruthlessly. You can either have a yard sale for all such stuff or even give them away in charity to people who really need them. There is no point having that old chair you never use or that lonely table in a corner which made way for the brand new one.

#2 Do not buy anything that will be too large for your interiors

If you do not need it or if you feel that certain furniture will be too large for the dimensions of your home then do not buy it. The most important aspect of getting rid of clutter is making sure that you actually do not get more useless stuff into your home. Shop smartly and do not bring things home impulsively. If you do, then you will find that the interiors of your home always appear cluttered no matter how hard you try.

#3 Create a separate and well-defined storage space

There is stuff lying in our home that we use sparingly, but cannot afford to throw away (”I’ll use/need them at certain point”). This could be all the mess in your bedroom, kitchen and even in your living room. Instead of spreading them all over the home, create a separate storage space and put them in there. No one is going to check it out, so you can shove in. This will assure that the rest of your home feels more spacious.

#4 Decorate each room around a centerpiece

Each room needs to have a centerpiece which will ensure that there is order and method to the way you decorate stuff. The furnishings and accessories must be spaced evenly and need to be spread across the room rather than forced in a single corner. Uneven patches of free and cluttered space make a room look poorly decorated. Your centerpiece could be a fireplace, a TV in the living room or maybe your bed in the bedroom.

#5 Switch to smart furniture and modern shelve spaces

Switching to multi-purpose furniture is a way to save on space immensely and this gives a larger look to your interiors. There are many such options available today which allow you to use a couch as a bed or a center table as dining space. You can also use the folding shelves such as the modern ones provided by IKEA in corridors to hide away the clutter.

#6 Maximize the usage of storage space

By maximizing the available space – using the walls for storage by using hanging shelves for example, you can always create more walking space and avoid the feeling of being cramped in the room.

The key to getting rid of clutter is to ensure that you know exactly what you need and what you can do away with. When your mind is clear, then so will be your home!

Tree hotel / Tham Videgård Hansson Arkitekter

26 Feb

An interesting concept for a camouflaged hotel on a tree by Swedish architects Tham & Videgård Hansson Arkitekter:

The concept is to create a shelter up in the trees, a lightweight aluminum structure hung around a tree trunk, boxes clad in mirrored glass, 4×4×4 meters. The exterior reflects the surroundings and the sky, creating a camouflaged refuge. The interior is all made of plywood and the windows give a 360 degree view.

The functions provides a living for two people, a double bed, a small kitchen and bathroom, a living room and roof terrace. The access to the cabin is by a rope ladder or a rope bridge.

To prevent birds fly into the windows, transparent stickers, visible for birds, will be added to the facades.

How to Select the Right Window Curtains

20 Feb

When it comes to decorating, there is one element in the room that is often forgotten, and that is the window treatments. Most people will purchase curtains as an afterthought, something that needs to go up but doesn’t really matter. The problem is the window treatments do matter and it should be an active decision when you are designing your decor. Selecting the right window curtains can be surprisingly complex. If you choose the wrong type or the wrong color, it can completely ruin the design that you have. Finding the best curtains for your room can lead to a flow in style that will have any professional interior designer borrowing from your idea for future projects. When a window treatment works, it really works.

window-curtains

If you are trying to select window treatments for your home but are unsure of where to start, there are a few pointers that will help make finding the right window curtains much easier.

Keep the curtains in the room:

This is actually a mistake that many people make. They find a curtain style and they put the same curtains into every room whether it looks good with the decor or not. The simple fact is each room can have different curtains, unless you are working with an open floor concept and you will not want a child themed curtain in a living room any more than you would want bold and luxurious window coverings in a child’s room. Be aware of this fact and make sure that you change up the curtains from room to room.

Understand your privacy:

One of the more popular window treatments that you can find are sheer drapes. While these are wonderful in many different areas, they are not the best style of drape to purchase if you want to have a little privacy since you can see through most sheer drapes. Bedrooms should never have sheer drapes solely, and neither should bathrooms for that matter. Instead, pair them with a darker drape or window covering that does just that; covers.

Understand the lighting:

When it comes to windows, not all of them produce the same amount of lighting and this will affect the type of drapes that you use. Drapes that are heavy can block out a lot of light and this works well in a bedroom, especially bedrooms that offer amazing views of the sunrise. Sheer drapes are excellent for sun rooms that don’t need a lot of privacy. Sheers provide a light airy feel that work wonderfully in many spaces. When you know the amount of light coming through the window, you can plan accordingly.

Materials are important:

There are many different materials and fiber combinations that you can use for a curtain but your should choose materials that are fade resistant, especially if the room gets a lot of light, which is common in south facing rooms. Although silks may seem luxurious for a room, they are better left on the pillows and other accents since silk curtains will fade quickly and you will be left with dull and ugly curtains on your windows.

Tie in the design:

While you may not realize it, it is very important to tie the curtains in with the theme. This does not mean that you have to play it safe and make the curtains match perfectly but they shouldn’t clash with the decor. Make sure that the materials reflect the materials in the room, the color works with your color palette and the thickness of the material works with the feel of the decor. The last thing you will want is a heavy drape in a light and airy design space.

When it comes to the color, you can use the curtains to add depth to a space or you can use the curtains to provide a little pop of color or a statement piece to the room.

If you are still unsure how to use curtains in your space, I would strongly recommend reading through freshome.com or browsing through a few show rooms to gather a few ideas before applying them to you room. Lastly, I would recommend sketching out the window area and drawing in the drapes before you go out and purchase them.

One designer’s trouble is another designer’s treasure…

17 Feb

As a designer, I'm often faced with the "problem piece".  A client wants to go Tuscan in style, but they still have their mother's danish modern buffet in the dining room.  Or maybe they like mid-century, but their last designer convinced them to buy a chesterfield sofa for their living room.  It's not that they hold these pieces in great sentimental value, but they are too high in quality, or they spent too much on them, to just give them away or sell in a garage sale.  Besides, it's not very sustainable to just throw out the old, simply because it doesn't work visually.

Well, there is now a great alternative called Former Furniture.  Created by interior designer Lindsey Dann, Former Furniture is full of stylish items just looking for the right owner.  According to their website…

"Former Furniture is an online marketplace for buyers and sellers of previously owned furniture and exclusive showroom pieces. At Former Furniture, buyers can find a treasure trove of well-priced, beautiful furniture and accessories while sellers can maximize their initial investment by finding a new home for their goods."

Check out just a few of the cute things I found on their site:

A. Rudin olive print chair

A. Rudin chair in "olive" print

red metal side tables

Red powder coated vintage industrial side tables

1960's Danish Modern Settee

1960's Danish Modern settee

Best of all, the furniture, lighting and accessories on their site have all been personally inspected by Former Furniture, and they will set-up shipping and delivery.  They can even arrange for items to be reupholstered or refinished for you.  Be sure to look towards the bottom of each listing's page to find Lindsey's design tip, tailored to each piece.

 Love it!
