Interior Design Sense

We received the following email recently from Ewelina: I am a young interior designer from Poland (Europe), taking my first steps in designing. It’s not easy in my country to change peoples’ mind and attitude as far as interior design is concerned. Many people still don’t care how they live, but hopefully it’s changing, slowly but still it is. Ewelina sent along photos of 2 of her projects which I’d love to share with our readers. (Check out the second one, my favourite, after the jump).

First set of photos is my latest project of a living room combined with kitchen. It’s an old apartment, so it required to be change almost entirely.The only thing that hasn’t been changed so much, is the kitchen. Before the renovation the kitchen had olive-green colour, so that the room seemed to be sad and dark. Thanks to the great material that it is made of (oak) I decided to change only the colour, despite it would be much easier and cheaper to make a new kitchen. All the shelves where hand-painted!. It took a lot of work form my carpenter The living space has a silk curtains and cushions, and a silver and glass accessories, such as table and the bracket next to the door. One of my favourite thing in this interior is a crystal table lamp, it gives romantic, warm light.

There aren’t a lot of homes that can take pride in having an ocean for their back yard. This opulent Kaanapali estate is located near the Pacific Ocean and has breathtaking beach views. The residence consists of 11, 000 square feet of living space and houses two master suites, six guest rooms, a media room, library, home office and separate caretaker’s quarters. It is a mind-blowing residence not only in size, but also in location and design. We particularly enjoy the landscape architecture elements which do a great job in welcoming the building’s inhabitants and guests. The interior design is a harmonious mix of modern details together with more traditional ones. Other home “additions” include a oceanfront pool, a Jacuzzi, a yoga pavilion and an exercise room. The 8 bedroom residence is being sold online here, for $ 23,800,000 ! We are looking forward to your likes and dislikes. – via Luxury Retreats

Don’t you just love it when you see a home that emphasizes on its many, many books? In this post we would like to showcase an original apartment designed by Triptyque Studio for Houssein Jarouche, owner of the design boutique Micasa in São Paulo. The striking element of this uncommon home is a giant curved bookcase that seems to be warped around the main living space of the apartment. Here is a small description from Triptyque: This project embodies the idea of global design – it’s a completely artistic project. A contemporaneous and singular architectural plan is established from the layout to the faucets. The 300 square feet apartment was planned as a great gallery with aligned rooms without an established function. The goal was to stimulate unexpected occupations and give a certain gratuité to the spaces. Here is a modern crib that spells freshness and vitality. Designed by architect Steve Kent and located in Santa Monica, this residence seems sprung out of a postal card. With a simple rectangular shape, white walls and plenty of colors, 24th Street House looks like a giant gift box. The contrast between the front and back of this building is striking. While the facade (facing the street) seems to reveal a cold, concrete home, deprived of an expansive personality, the back (overlooking the pool) shows the true nature of this spacious crib filled with energy. The interior arrangements are simply breathtaking, featuring state-of-the-art furniture and tasteful decorations. Each room faces the pool and has a unique design. Intriguing art works are present, turning this home into a cozy, noble and original living space.

When it comes to pets, some people have a tendency to go out of their way to ensure that these little animals are taken care of in the best possible way. Today’s special dog splurge comes from Best Friend’s Home and it consists of a handcrafted, state-of-the-art “modern” dog house. “Cubix” is a spacious and airy miniature architectural work inspired by the Bauhaus style and especially created to provide comfort and “living space” for the cuddly creatures. The small building features a door especially developed for the canines and several rectangular windows. As for the materials used to build this extravagant home, the company utilized break-proof window glass and premium varnished wood. Can you guess the price for this uncommon crib? “Cubix” will take a dog owner back 1900 Euros, which in some countries is the same amount of money some people give away in order to furnish their entire living-room. For those of you who like more a subtle interior design, this beautiful and cosy apartment foud at Stadshem will be eye candy. Once you walk in the door of a small hallway, a rustic feeling strikes. But once you get accommodated to the environment, the modern lines of the furniture and black defined mirror seem to shine through. The short and narrow hallway leads to the living room, where we find a relaxing design in tone with the peaceful living space. The living room is a little crowded, but the fluffy couch gives it the impression of  a fun, inflatable space. The fuchsia and pink details soften the overall look of the room. Next, the kitchen: a beautiful space covered with dark tiles and contrasting with the bold white furniture. Another colourful rustic carpet brightens up the space, while a stripped window shade balances the use of powerful colours. A small dining corner joyfully recreates a modern version of the cottage family table. The bedroom seems a bit outdated, but the same rustic feeling covers the modern design. The bathroom is quite simple, it does not surprise the eye, but the rest of the house is a cute city dwelling.

West Seattle Residence was designed by Lawrence Architecture and displays an intriguing contemporary architecture. Concrete, glass and steel were the main materials used to build this house and define its appearance. Here is the official description from the project developers: “A concrete wall up to twenty-four feet high ((7,3 meters) organizes the site and the house: the garage, entry and service spaces are on the street side of the wall, while providing  privacy for the main living space which is a curtain wall-enclosed pavilion.  The wall is also the organizing element for the circulation including the stairs with cantilevered steel treads. Supported on steel frames and  triangular steel trusses, the roof  swoops over the concrete wall capping the pavilion. Eight by sixteen foot sections of the curtain wall pivot for ventilation.  The stair has demountable guardrails which are normally in place but were removed for the photographs. The master bedroom is in a loft space above the kitchen, while a family room, media room, children’s bedrooms and bathrooms occupy the daylight basement level.  There is additional living space above the garage accessible via stair or future elevator.” (photos by Benjamin Benschneider)

This next apartment has beautifully designed interiors that showcase some pretty amazing furniture, decorations and interior design ideas. Every corner of the Yaletown loft has something special. Take, for example, the kitchen: a contemporary mix of modern furniture and brick walls, high-tech appliances and an unusual place to store cold beverages in plain sight. The project area has 93 square meters and every space was carefully chosen to fit a modern lifestyle. The place used to be a warehouse, but it was tastefully transformed into lofts. Interior designer Kelly Reynolds successfully restored the beauty of the old warehouse and complemented it with modern design so that the final result is a balanced mix of old and new. The apartment received a stylish makeover and some walls were demolished to create a bedroom and two bathrooms, a living space and an open kitchen. The original warehouse brick wall became the background on which modern furniture comes to life. All the mix and match created the perfect bachelor pad.

As the years go by, we all want more beautiful things with amazing features. Some designs are classic and they only need some upgrading from time to time. This next home in Wilmslow, Cheshire was built by architect Frazer Crane in the 1970s, and it was carefully maintained by the owner to be as modern as possible. Built in one of the most desired neighbourhoods, this modern home needs a new owner. Featuring four bedrooms, a large living area opened to the floor above, the home is set on a beautiful road that borders the open countryside, making the steel and glass structure stand out on the green countryside background. The first floor shelters an open living space, where the kitchen, dining and living room are connected through an ample space design. A lounge, a study and a utility room complete the first floor, along with the large garage. On the second floor, the four bedrooms and bathrooms, together with a contemporary dressing room, make up the upstairs layout. Beautifully bordered by the countryside, the large back garden was surrounded by trees that insure the privacy of the inhabitants. Lighthouse is a fascinating architecture project designed by Linebox Studio and located in Ottawa’s Lindenlea community. Especially developed for a family of five, this welcoming home has a total surface of 4500 square feet  (418 sqm), which is more than enough living space for its inhabitants.The crib manages to combine traditional rural details with modern urban ones thus ensuring a harmonious environment. The first striking aspect of this residence is the unique façade which was oriented north in order to ensure a high level of privacy in the opposite south side. According to the project’s official description, the design is based on a”vertical stacking of both open and closed spaces and minimal details that establish an ascending hierarchy of social and private spaces. ” Answering the needs for both intimacy and connectivity and located in a serene and inviting place , Lighthouse seems like the perfect family retreat.  (Photography: Christian Lalonde)
