Cindarella Table, Inspired by the Design of the 17th Century

From Duch artist Jeroen Verhoeven, we would like to present a table that definitely does not lack personality. In fact, its identity can be searched back into the 17th century, in the times of “archetypal shapes of tables and commodes” , as it was inspired by the how furniture looked four centuries ago. What is striking about this product is its elaborate production method. Here is a statement from the designer:  “This process took three months to perfect. The virtual design was ’sliced’ and each of the 57 slices, each 80mm thick (a total of 741 layers of plywood), was fabricated by CNC (computer numerically controlled) cutting machines, working on three, and sometimes five axes.  Each slice was cut from the front and from the back to perfect the curves and undercuts, pushing the boundaries of the technology. All the slices were assembled and the entire object, which is a hollow plywood form, was finished by hand.” A lot of work for an apparently easy-to-make table, don’t you think? There were only 20 of these  made, most of them purchased by museums. – via BookofJoe

Sustainable Architecture: R.B. Murray Office Building in Missouri

Huff Projects is an architecture company whose latest projects include this office building for R.B. Murray, which we would like to present today. Located in Springfield, Missouri, the development plans took in consideration a lot of nature energy sources, which is why at the moment this office building may be regarded as a sustainable one. This is proven by the butterfly-shaped roof, an innovative concept and structure that allows light to penetrate the conference rooms and the other offices. Due to this fact, there is a minimum need for artificial lighting during the day time. Natural ventilation and  air filtration are also some of the features of these construction. And if this was not enough, most of the material used to build the place where recycled. The interior is warm and inviting, with paintings in fresh colors, creating a positive environment for the company’s employees. What do you say, would this building act as an incentive to you?

Curtains in Modern Houses no Longer a Point of Interest ?

19 Jan

When looking at modern houses lately, I couldn’t help but notice curtains are no longer a point of interest. Their place was taken by the contemporary blinds, which are a lot easier to take care of and manage. However, you have to agree with us on the fact that curtains give a special feel to a room and in those homes they do exist, they bring wonders in matters of overall interior design. they have the ability of completely changing the way a room looks and also bring elegance to any space. To us, they still remain a great decorative item and a pretty convenient one as well. We put up together a few such examples. We hope you will let yourself be inspired and remember the old days when curtain ruled the world of indoor arrangements.

Black, White an Wood: How is That For An Apartment Design?

Black&White has become a classic in the world of design colors combination. Stylish and elegant, black and white interiors are usually also quite sober and serious. However, this is not the case with this beautiful apartment in Sweden. Because of the touch of color here and there and due to some really interesting and fresh decorating items, this place looks extremely friendly and warm. Every room is special in its own way and the details are worth a second look. But this apartment is not based entirely on the black and white theme. Wood is also present, spicing things up and making the overall design a lot more interesting. And if you thought this was not a good combination, we dare you to look over the photos and change your mind. -via

Searching and Finding Inspiration for an Amazing Apartment

11 May

In the beginning Freshome was just a small place where I’ve gathered some inspiration for an apartment that I wanted to buy in the future. Day by day I was surfing online searching and trying to find more and more ideas for that perfect apartment. As you can see today there are a lot of amazing ideas on Freshome, but what I’ve found today really blew my mind. This is not a real apartment, is just a 3D picture created by a very talented 3D Modeler from Turkey called Elftug. To be honest, now after 2 years of searching ideas, I really want to transform this idea intro reality. I don’t know if this would be possible and what kind of apartment I would need for this project, but this is really awesome …don’t you think ?

Architects: FORM/Kouichi Kimura Architects
Location: Shiga, Japan
Client: Private
Construction Year: 2008
Site Area: 227,97 sqm
Constructed Area: 181,74 sqm
Photographs: The copyright of all images belongs to Takumi Ota

The lot is located at the foot of a hill where the fields and houses are mixed together.

The client’s desire was “to live while feeling nature without being bothered by looks from the neighbors”. To make the best use of the lot, the planning was designed to enclose the lot with the trench extended beyond the building, and to provide an interior courtyard as the center.

The enclosed space clips images from the surrounding landscapes, creating a comfortable outdoor living room that is not exposed to the outside world. The position of each opening is carefully designed in consideration of “what to take in and what to conceal”. Specifically the position and form of the opening of the living/dining room with kitchen on the second floor is most effective in concert with the interior.

In this house, the most important theme is “how to close/open” in the open environment.

Hillside Gipsy House in Berkeley, California

29 Apr

Designed by Architect Craig Steely on a steep sloping acre lot in Berkeley, California, the Gipsy House is a modernish structure with a rich natural wooden exterior that adds to its natural appeal. With one part of the house buried into the hillside and the other one— mostly glass, cantilevering toward the view, the contemporary design is all about details, sharp edges and quality furnishings. While on the interior a “floating” staircase dominates the whole living area with its stylish wood and glass, on the outside, the strong connection with nature is all that matters. Simplicity at its best …

How to Buy a Kitchen Sink

27 Apr

You would think that selecting and buying a kitchen sink is a relatively easy job, but then it has a lot more to it than what meets the eye. Bringing home the right sink allows you the luxury of living peacefully for sometime without worrying about washing needs too much. Bring a bad one home and you will not just lose money and time, but also plenty of peace of mind. So how exactly do you pick a kitchen sink? Read on to know more…

kitchen-sink

#1 Check the basic model

While they all may have the same on top, there are various types of kitchen sinks depending on the flush system and the way they are mounted. You can opt for an insert model, under-mounted, flush-mounted or a top-mounted sink. If you are planning for your own kitchen and it’s still in the construction phase, then you can opt for an integral sink that is in-built into your “station”.

#2 Check the quality

There are obviously many choices when it comes to materials. And you get to pick from the popular stainless steel,  to the porcelain enamel, stone blend, metal or any other fancy types. The stainless steel one is a good choice, but just make sure you do not pick one with a mirror finish. It’s great in the store, but it’s hard to maintain. Also keep in mind that the porcelain sink will last as long as you do not chip it with hard objects.

#3 Size matters

The size and style of the sink vary. However, before bringing one home, take care that you get the measurements right. Since it’s the expert who will most often install them, you need not worry about every inch as long as it’s not excessively large for your kitchen station.

#4 The faucet is important

It is before buying the kitchen sink that you need to worry about where the faucet will go, what features it sports and how well it goes with the sink. If you are looking to buy a fancy faucet that is really exotic, then ensure that it has the necessary holes that should house it.

$5 Color and style that match your kitchen

If your kitchen and faucets have a certain special running theme or a unique style, then the sink has to go along. If you have a Retro theme then use bright and bubbly colors, the minimalist look needs neutral shades and straight lines, while a classic look might need to have a finishing that resembles metal with wooden lining. It is all about blending in seamlessly.

No matter where you buy your kitchen sink, check for quality and ensure that it does not give way too much when you press on it. Also ask the expert to install it for you as it is not one of the places where you need to worry about saving cash by getting cheeky. Follow these simple rules and you will not be disappointed.

Guide to Bringing Home the Right Wallpaper

14 Apr

No matter how much you invest in your interiors (paint, furniture and accessories), wallpapers add charm, beauty and a fine finish to your walls. The final and essential touch that can make or break the look of the room with proper lighting to go along, picking the right wallpaper for your interiors is much more than just falling in love with the design. Here is a simple and easy guide for the perfect wallpaper.

wallpaper-home

#1 Estimate the number of rolls

The first thing you do before you go out to buy your wallpaper is to know how much you really need and how much you can afford to pay for each square meter.

#2 Pick your patterns

The color, the style, the pattern or the material of the wallpaper should go very well with the interiors of your home. When it comes to wallpapers, contrast is also a fine way to go as it brings out the beauty of your furnishings and your accessories.

wallpaper-home2

#3 Budget! You need it

Wallpaper to the wall is much like decor to your room. And you not only need to love what you are bringing home, but your purse should be able to afford it. It is here that the choosing of style matters. While complex digital and special handcrafted patterns are costly, the more common printed wallpapers are a lot cheaper and affordable. It is balance between aesthetics and finance once again.

#4 Buy quality

The quality of your wallpaper is defined by how good the material is, how durableand how well it can withstand the rigors of daily life. In general cases Vinyl wallpaper and a blend like paper-backed vinyl are generally considered the tough lot. Try not to buy something too cheap as you might have to redo the whole thing within a few months as the poor quality paper withers away.

wallpaper-home3

#5 Adhesive

Instead of picking a wallpaper that you need to glue up using a bucket of adhesive, pick one of the many varieties that already comes with a glued back. This will go directly on the wall and will not only make the installation easy, but also the removal process stain-free whenever needed.

#6 Accommodate for paper lost in matching patterns

Once you are decorating, you will lose some paper while trying to match patterns o those walls of yours. Make sure that you compensate for it in advance. If you have no clue about what you are doing, call in an expert to get the job done.

The beauty and the refined feel offered by wallpaper, are a must if you wish to achieve a complete look for your interiors. Most often, it is a task that is a relatively easy, with a results that changes the world that surrounds you. Try it and feel the difference!
