Stand-up Toilet

7 Mar

Going weak knees outta love and romance is a good thing, but when age (or aching gym-tired muscles) catches up, even simple tasks like sitting on the toilet seat become a pain. The Stand-helping Closestool Toilet Seat features a seat with a hydraulic-powered lever function, which helps you to stand up with ease. I’d be more comfortable if the design included a hand rail to stabilize the standing-up process. Tippling over will be such a shame!

Stand-helping Closestool is a 2011 red dot design concept winner.

Eclectic Kitchen Designs: BeauxArts.02 by SieMatic

We love the wide-ranging mix of matte and polished stainless steel, wood, glass and the StoneDesign island countertop in this eclectic kitchen design from SieMatic. Designed in collaboration with designer Mick De Giulio (the “rock star of kitchen design” in the U.S.), the BeauxArts.02 kitchen lets you become the creator of your own space. Combine these different elements, finishes and colors to design the kitchen of your dreams – they way you envision it. Your only boundary is your own imagination. A modern interpretation of a classic culinary space, the BeauxArts.02 kitchen is delish! More details are available by visiting SieMatic.

Cool couch!

6 Mar

We received an email recently from Sara, who is one of six editors from around South Africa reporting on trends, fashion, culture, design, photography, interiors and local creatives on the site Itswhatiminto. Their site is a must-read, and in particular this story that features the home of Kelli Crawford and her AMAZING couch. It’s gorgeous. I think I’m in love.

Hold the Phone

Gotta love the í¼ber-cool iLoop iPhone holder! The designer was inspired one day while playing with an phone in one hand and an old exercise hand grip in the other. The resulting design has a playful aesthetic and is a nifty solution for stabilizing your iphone when you’re recording videos, FaceTiming with friends, or playing music.

L’idylle rustique

5 Mar

I love the make-do, and touches of elegance. The stainless steel cabinetry of the kitchen… not so much. It’s strange how little room there seems to be between the tub and the wash basin – you have to sidle in to brush your teeth, it seems. The windows in the children’s room are so wonderful, and I love the multiple levels.

Home of a collector

Thanks to Carl-Johan for sending us this link to the Swedish home of Peter Pluntkys, an antiquities expert and regular on the Swedish version of “Antiques Roadshow”. I love the quirkiness of this home, and the fact that the owners believe their home should still be practical (and not a museum), where everything can be used.

Material Girls Blog

2 Mar

I have to admit that when I first heard people talking about the book 50 Shades of Grey I was excited to see that someone had finally come out with a book that highlighted the best shades of grey for everyone to use in their home.  It was about time that we were given a guide on what shade to use (where and when) because we all know how difficult it is to get that perfect shade of grey on our walls.  Sometimes it comes out a little too blue or has a hint of purple when all we wanted was straight up grey!  Well, the book wasn’t exactly a guide to grey paint but more of a romantic thriller that explores new love and the complexity of human connection.. and while it’s supposed to be amazing and a MUST read, it has nothing to do with decorating!  So, with that being said, I still plan on reading the book 50 Shades of Grey and I’ll continue to narrow down my favorite grey paint colors until I can create my own guide on 50 shades…or maybe  just 25.  This is where I’ll start:

Here’s how Collingwood might look on your walls but this is obviously a room with a lot of sunlight so it’s reading as a very soft and neutral grey.  It might turn out slightly darker in your space depending on the amount of natural light you get

What can I say other than it’s the perfect soft and subtle hint of grey

Material Girls Blog

Benjamin Moore 1465 Nimbus

Material Girls Blog

Nimbus is more of a greige so it has that slight beige undertone that will keep your space perfectly balanced and calm

Material Girls Blog

Benjamin Moore 2133-70 Tundra

Material Girls Blog

Tundra is a perfect soft grey that will keep things light and bright

These are the greys I’ve used on recent projects and been very happy with – I know I have a long way to go to complete my 25 shades of grey but It’s a start.
