If any of the furniture in the Vitra Haus looks familiar it should, these are some of the most iconic designs of the current and past generation. The entire collection of Vitra classics are now housed in the new addition to the Vitra campus which was commissioned by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron and recently finalized. The construction situated in Weil am Rhein on the border of Switzerland and Germany is a series of twelve houses positioned to make the best of the landscape attributes and features special areas for specific designers and room settings. The snazzy modern furniture from GAEAforms caught my eye, what can I say I love the clean lines and lustrous finishes that accentuate their diverse color palate. Since 2003 GAEAforms has worked to advance the use of composite materials and the functional shapes that can be made from them. If you’d like to send us photos to include in next week’s “pets on furniture” post, please ensure your photos follow our basic rules: First, the pet must be on a piece of furniture. And said piece of furniture must be clearly visible in the photo, so it takes center stage rather than your pet. (Think of it more of a photo of a great piece of furniture…and your pet happens to be sitting on it). And second, the photo must be of decent quality. We mostly think they are little dweebs with big hearts. If they are not in bed cuddled up napping, they are on their favorite chair, sunbathing or sitting at the table waiting for first course. Sometimes Mona gets a little confused, jumps on the table and lays in the middle, like she is the main course. Seymour loves to watch people cook or sit in front of the oven cooking mom’s cookies. He won’t budget if highly anticipates a fresh batch. Good luck trying to break that concentration.“

Abril is the latest collection of furniture from MOBILFRESNO, expected to be launched this April. The elegant set brings together dining chairs, bed frames, interesting wardrobes and great looking night-stands. The designers like to say they are “suffused with the self-same light of the serenity and elegance of April”. Leaving poetry aside and looking at these interior from a practical point of view, we can not help but noticing a harmonious combination between classic and contemporary. The items go great in combination but can also be purchased individually and be integrated in any  similar classic-modern environment.  Elegant and refined, some of the products (such as the desks) could also be used as office furniture. The unusual shapes contribute to the collection’s originality. Feeling inspired? -via 3rings

My intern Colette is an Art History student at Northwestern and recently reminded me about the fascinating history of the now legendary Barcelona Chair.  I am a big fan of the Barcelona Chair for its timeless design and the instant pop of chic it adds to a room.

The Barcelona Chair was actually designed by acclaimed architect Mies Van der Rohe himself for the German Pavilion at the Barcelona World’s Fair in 1928.  However, the chair was not designed by Mies alone…his partner and companion Lilly Reich also had a large part in the design. It is hard to believe this chair was designed over 80 years ago, for its design is not at all antiquated.  Rather, I think it still looks incredibly modern!

The chair is said to have been inspired by the folding chairs of pharaohs as well as the x-shaped footstools of the Romans.  While the original design was made in stainless steel with ivory leather, the Barcelona Chair now has many variations and has inspired countless other furniture designs.
