Andrew Grinton

30 Nov

We received a tip the other day from a reader named Wilson regarding the photography of Torontonian Andrew Grinton. I am shcoked we have not blogged his work before because it’s fantastic. Wilson’s comment was that Andrew is a cross between 2 of my favourite photographers, Ditte Isager and Anders Schonnemann. His still life portfolio is exquisite, and my favourites are below along with some interiors. Thanks Wilson!

James Leland Day … gimme, gimme, gimme

29 Nov

…more of stylist and editor James Leland Day’s work. Kim featured James’ work a few years ago and he is responsible for styling perhaps our favourite photo of all time. (Remember red tolix chair and art wall in a white white room? …his!) I’m moving right into these rooms. I just need to figure out how to squeeze through my monitor and plop on that sofa. James you’re a genius!

Deconstructing a black box

25 Nov

Toying with space. Deconstructing floors and walls and reconstructing a big communal space. Old facade and new internal configurations. Is it thinking outside the box? Floating and fusing and looking just a little like an Escher print. House and studio transformed by Zecc Architecten and Studio Rolf.fr in Rotterdam.

A handmade home

24 Nov

Every once in a while I see a home featured on a website that makes me sit back and sigh in delight. This is one of those homes. My twin sister sent me the link to this home which I think is in Finland (since the site is) and is the home of a family of 5 where the mother creates beautiful knit objects and the father is a carpenter. I absolutely adore the rustic, natural, neutral and handmade vibe of this home. I think I’m going to save just about all of these photos in my inspiration folder. (More, including the gorgeous kitchen, after the jump).

A story of a farmhouse in Japan

23 Nov

The following was from an email we received from Davina: “I wanted to share a project with you, a short documentary I am working on called MINKA, about a 250-year-old farmhouse in Japan that was restored by an American journalist and his adopted Japanese son. I’m in the midst of raise finishing funds for the film via Kickstarter and am trying to reach as many design lovers as I can. This is the link to my fundraising page.” Everything about this video is just so beautiful – the story, the farmhouse, the cinematography. I just had to share it. And I really REALLY hope Davina is able to collect the funds to finish the film – it’s a really touching story.

Here is the trailer:

Paris through the lens of Rachael Smith

22 Nov

The last few times Kim featured photographer Rachael Smith’s work on Desire to Inspire I think I just about saved every image to my inspiration files. I think I’ll be doing the same with these three Paris homes. Fun and creative real world spaces captured in all their unpretentious beauty by Rachael. She has the eye doesn’t she? No wonder she is demand. Love!

Anna Kern encore

18 Nov

It’s almost 2 years since Kim first featured Swedish photographer Anna Kern’s fabulous work. The clarity of light, her ability to read a room and simply but beautifully capture the essence. What could possibly be better? More photos in the portfolio of course! My favourite is dinosaur as bathroom accessory. A must have this season. Hang it. A must have every season.

Mark Williams

16 Nov

What’s that you say? You came here craving a little bit ‘o eye candy? Well, let me see what I can do to help. How about some photos from the talented Mark Williams, whom I featured once before here, that I guarantee will have you aching with envy (either because you wish your home looked even remotely as fab as these spaces, or because you can’t take a decent photograph to save your life). :-)

A home in Marseille

12 Nov

Last week I blogged a reader request for industrial kitchens. As a result we received an email from Céline, who wanted to share her loft in downtown Marseille, the south of France. She sent some photos of her industrial kitchen, along with photos of her dining room and patio (which took 6 months to create) and a couple before photos. “In the dining room and kitchen we mixed vintage letterboxes, my father’s old shop ‘comptoir’ with antique carrera marble, old advertising, a station board, tolix chairs ….” I adore the kitchen – it’s far from sparse which gives it such an inviting feel. It’s eclectic and creative and the result is functional and convenient. Fantastic job Céline!!

Pinch me … I really am moving

11 Nov

… but they are all mine (and the bank’s)
It’s the simple things that make me happy. Laughing with my husband, rubbing the dog’s belly when he jumps up on the bed at 2 am in the morning and almost pushes me out, finding a perfect little bargain in a thrift store, finishing a painting or messaging madly each morning wi Kim. Simple things like holding a key in my hand. These are my new old house keys and at last I am moving! Excited, grateful and already exhausted! I’ll be offline for the next few days but if all goes well I’ll be back on Tuesday with lots more inspiring rooms and reading guides full of all the fabulous blogs I haven’t had a chance to share yet. I might even have a few pictures of the new old house. Wish me luck!

P.S. The house is called “Collingwood”. Is it bad luck to rename it? Australian readers will understand why I might just want to change it ;)
