Transparent Chair is a project envisioned by Japanese design firm Nendo and was created in order to serve as a relaxing seating unit. According to the designers, you are looking at “a chair made with polyurethane film, a transparent film commonly used as a packing material for precision instruments and products susceptible to vibrations and shock, thanks to its high elasticity and ability to return to its original state. Looking at the chair, it seems to consist of nothing but a backrest and armrests. It wraps and supports the body like a hammock, providing a light, floating feeling for the sitter“. These unusual looking ceramic tiles come from Nendo and present a really cool hidden function. Thickening the list of unusual speaker designs on Freshome, these unique works have an interesting story behind. Former Japan footballer Nakata Hidetoshi contacted five curators in order to stimulate traditional crafts in Japan. Each of them named one designer and one ceramists that formed a team and worked on a single, unique piece. Nendo was invited to collaborate with Mitsuke Masayasu ( a skillful potter) and the result consisted in the speakers seen below. Here is more from Nendo’s official site: “We decided to complement the infinitely sophisticated, elaborate lines of Mitsuke’s red-glaze designs by fusing them with the infinite sophistication of digital manufacturing techniques to create a set of high-end audio speakers in 1mm thick ceramic substrate.” A revolutionary way to listen to your favorite music, wouldn’t you say?

Looking at the pictures below, one wouldn’t guess that they are looking at an audio speaker! The uber chic Ceramic Speaker is the brainchild of Tokyo studio Nendo who collaborated with a traditional Kanazawa-based Japanese potter. Nothing short of a piece of art this speaker is the anti-thesis of the traditional audio equipment. The Modernist/Futuristic footprint was possible thanks to the use of 1mm thick ceramic substrate which has a high heat resistance and works flawlessly with digital manufacturing techniques.

It is true that fitness clubs today would do almost anything to impress and attract customers. But this idea pushes the limits of creativity and brings something truly unique. The people in the images below look quite unusual doing what they do. But keep in mind that this is a very efficient sport, with immediate results. The uncommon climbing wall below is just one of the “accessories” of the much talked about Illoiha Omotesando fitness club in Tokyo and was designed by Nendo. Instead of the usual rock-shaped holding elements, this wall features plenty of unexpected objects which the climber will definitely find… propulsive.

Here is the official project description from Nendo: To express the original brand concept of “becoming beautiful through movement”, we chose the theme “rock-climbing in Omotesando” and developed a design that uses the mismatch between a rugged outdoor sport and Tokyo’s fashion district to its advantage. Instead of the usual rough and outdoorsy climbing wall, we came up with the idea of using interior design elements like picture frames, mirrors, deer heads, bird cages and flower vases to create a challenging wall with hard-to-find holds and unusual finger grips. We hope that our uniquely Omotesando-style climbing wall inspires newcomers to try out the sport, and starts a new wave in fitness with style.
