Gripping That Milk Bottle Better

26 Aug

As an able bodied person it’s hard to comprehend how simple things like opening a milk bottle and pouring from it can be a challenge for some people. This Milk Bottle Re-design takes into consideration, the use by people who are suffering from dexterity problems; however it doesn’t ignore normal usage either. The solution is one where less or even no clamping force / grip force will have to be applied in order to lift and pour the milk out of the bottle. And thus this new design.

The Pros and Cons of Having an Open Floor Plan Home

22 Aug

Home floor plans have evolved over the years.  In the 1950’s-60’s, the idea of compartmentalized rooms was a common theme.  Starting at the entry door, individual rooms were centered off a main hallway and the activities of each room were isolated. By the time the 1980’s floor plans evolved, rooms began to flow into one another. The concept of half walls and visual dividers allowed a family to converse and interact while staying in their separate rooms.  Today, the open floor plan has become a sought after amenity in homes. For some people the noise travel, and visual distractions is a con of living in an open floor plan.  Follow these tips to see if the pros and cons of having an open floor plan are for you and your family.

1.) Assess how clean you keep your home, honestly: One of the pros of having an open floor plan is being able to visually connect living spaces in décor and aesthetics. The cons of this concept are if your family isn’t tidy, your entire home will always look this way. If your family leaves a trail of destruction in every room they touch, an open floor plan may not be for you.

2.) Determine how much art work you have to hang: Art work, especially large pieces require space to hang.  Since open floor plans are removing many of the dividing walls between rooms, the area to hang and display artwork will be minimal compared to a closed floor plan.

3.) Watching children in an open floor plan can be safe: Open floor plans that are open from the kitchen into the living spaces are great for monitoring children while they play, and you make dinner.  This reduces the amount of time away from your important tasks, but for safety reasons allows you to watch them out the corner of your eye!

Noise tends to travel in an open floor plan: For those who love to listen to their surround system televisions in the family room while the kids play in an adjacent room, talking on the phone could be a challenge. Open floor plans allows for visual connection and also allow for sound to travel easily.  Remember this when considering if a floor plan is for your family.

Open floor plans allows for more natural light: Since many interior walls are reduced to half walls or are removed totally, natural light from windows can reach further in to the house.  For those of you trying to renovate your home to achieve more natural light into interior spaces, think about removing (non-load bearing) walls. This will bring in more light and will make your home feel more spacious.

6.) Assess your entertaining needs with an open floor plan: If you love to have guests over and enjoy cooking, mingling and engaging in conversation at the same time, an open floor plan is right for you. Depending on the floor plan the kitchen can overlook into the dining and living rooms and often out to a porch or lanai areas – perfect for entertaining!

Entertaining guests from the kitchen has a downside: If you’re a chef, the idea of a few dirty dishes doesn’t concern you.  For those of you that like to entertain without the sight of dirty dishes in the background, an open floor plan may not work for your needs. You will have to determine if your lifestyle will fit into an open floor plan concept.

Home floor plans have come a long way in layout and feel.  Long hallways have been replaced with half walls, and dark rooms now get natural light from the perimeter adjacent rooms. The open floor plan concept is not for every family. Use these tips to see if it will be a fit for you.

Solar Flashlight Splits Apart to Transform Into a Lamp

11 Aug

Most people have a flashlight sitting in a drawer somewhere for use in an emergency… but wouldn’t it be cool if it could serve another purpose instead of standing idly by? Well that’s exactly what this transforming flashlight by designer Jia Dai does — it split opens to become a lamp! The only foreseeable problem is that if you’re constantly using it as a lamp, you might find yourself out of juice when you really need it as a flashlight, but the designer thought of that too — since the device is solar-powered, it constantly recharges in the sun.

A Country Summer House on the Isle of Wight

3 Aug

Whenever the words “a place in the country” are uttered the usual reaction is to think of a large rural house with a long drive leading up to manicured lawns and finely cut hedgerows, of course, that is Jane Austin and this the real world, where most people have to make do. However, making do, does not have to mean going without, take this small country cottage for instance, it is located on the Isle of Wight, which is along the southern coast of England. The building is nothing more than a summerhouse, which is a posh name for a shed. Yet this place has style and feeling, sure, not everyone can have the lakeside location, but the building is within the reach of most people. As for the decor, what grabs the attention is the simplicity of pastel shades and a minimum of furniture that makes the most of the space that is available without overcrowding the limited floor space, it is truly a place in the country, where relaxation is the order of the day.

Regarding Beauty in Audi

21 Jul

A fabulous design comes to my internet doorstep today, Amar Vaya, a designer who takes extra philosophical time in designing a car, one called Axiom in this case. Branded with the Audi name, the Axiom is an exercise in emphasizing the idea of “beauty” within the tradition of Audi’s idiom. What’s that mean? It means it’s gotta look like an Audi. People HAVE to know that it’s an Audi when they first peek at it. But right before or right after that, their next thought has to be “wow, that is quite the sight to behold, wouldn’t you say so? Yes, yes I would.”

Has Amar Vaya done it? Let’s take a look here. Vaya notes that success and progress through technology are tenants of the Audi brand, indeed that is one of the main driving forces behind them. Through this, Vaya promotes the Axiom as hope through progress, a freedom or refuge from an uncertain world as you sit inside a shell of futurism.

The second area where Vaya explores beauty through Audi is time. Through what Vaya describes as the “history, wisdom, knowledge, and legacy” of Audi especially through their design and technological advances, the Axiom describes all of this aesthetically.

Power, agility, beauty, Audi. Hotness, Vaya.

If you read Inhabitat on the regular, you know that two topics we’re gaga about are electric vehicles and industrial design mastermind Yves Béhar. That’s why we’re thrilled to announce that Béhar and his studio fuseproject teamed up with GE to create a brand new electric vehicle (EV) charger called the WattStation™ — and word on the street is it can power up cars in just 4 to 8 hours (as compared to the standard 12 to 18 hours of other stations). The two green powerhouses officially unveiled the new consumer-friendly design today in San Francisco, and we think it may change the way people use and see electric vehicles.

Beautiful Desert Prefab Home For Animals and Animal Lovers

2 Jul

anderson anderson architecture, prefab house, prefabricated construction, chain link, metal siding, animal friendly

Not only is this striking metal-sided house a beautiful example of prefab architecture — it was also designed not just for the people who reside there, but also for their animals! The owners of the home wanted a safe haven for their many animals that would protect them from local predators, so the home was designed with special areas just for pets. Located in the New Mexico desert on the Rio Chama, the Abiquiu House by Anderson Anderson Architecture also utilizes a number of energy and resource-efficient construction techniques.

5 Ways To Win Over Green Bloggers, green marketing, green bloggers, eco marketing, eco bloggers, green blogs, eco blogs, environmental marketing, environmental bloggers, enviro bloggers, marketing to bloggers, working with bloggers, winning over bloggers, how to win over bloggers

The market for eco-friendly products and services has exploded in the past five years, and it is pretty clear that companies with environmental brand cache have an edge over their competitors. If you think you have a solid eco story to tell about your brand and you are trying to engage in some ‘green marketing’, bloggers can be a real boon to your businessIF (and only if) you can get them to like your brand and want to evangelize your products. The flipside to this, of course, is that bloggers (like any other type of journalists) can just as quickly throw a major wrench in your public brand perception with negative articles and bad publicity if you get on their bad side. So what is the best way to win over eco bloggers? Here are 5 tips from a green blogger who has been working in the space for 5 1/2 years. (Yes, I’m talking to you PR people! ;) )

Rainproof Solar LED Bulb Could Illuminate the Developing World

10 Jun

kerosene replacement, replacement for kerosene, light for the developing world, electricity in the developing world, LED light bulb, solar powered light bulb, nokero light, nokero

1.6 billion people in the world still use kerosene lamps for light. Not only are they non-renewable and expensive — they can consume up to 5% of a family’s income — they also give off noxious cancer-causing fumes that amount to the emissions of 30 million cars. Nokero plans to improve air quality and reduce global warming emissions by replacing the unhealthy use of kerosene with their durable, rainproof, solar powered LED light bulb. They hope that this low cost, rechargeable light bulb will improve lives in the developing world by allowing people to kick kerosene to the curb.
