Simulating Natural Light by Daniel Rybakken

13 May

Sometimes apartments don’t always come with the right amount of windows. This means daylight is scarce. Daniel Rybakken is a young designer from Sweden. Living in Northern Europe, a place where natural lighting is limited throughout the year,Daniel studied the effects the lack of light has on people. As you probably already know, sunlight is associated with happiness for physical reasons also. His recreation of daylight could have a very positive effect on unconsciously changing the mood of the people looking at its effects. Moreover, as we already stated, this is a wonderful idea for tight spaces with no windows. His project was present at the Salone Satellite 2010 Milan and is nominated for the “The Swedish Design Award”. Nice going!-via Yatzer

Pre Order: Spaces for Ideas Sketchbook by Brian Ling

31 Mar

As a writer it never occurred to me how important and valuable a sketchbook can be to a designer. This was till I had an in depth conversation with fellow YD-er Brian Ling about his innovative Spaces for Ideas Sketchbook. Although most ideas are refined on the computer, it’s the basic sketch that gets the design flow going and as Brian says the fastest way to get an idea out of your mind and into reality is to sketch it. Drawing from his own passion for sketching, Brian has designed an essential sketchbook that highlights the work and not itself.

The Spaces for Ideas Sketchbook: Designed for people not afraid of big ideas!

The sketchbook is well constructed and affordable. More importantly it has been designed in such a way that you can sketch on the go and there is nothing to hinder your flow, as each page is big enough to sketch on. It’s just the right size but with enough space or room to play with. A key feature to the page layout is “Boundary-less” pages. The paper quality is good enough to take on all non-wet mediums like ink, pencil or markers.

Spaces for Ideas Sketchbook is for those who want an affordable and portable sketchbook handy at all times.

A set of 5 sketchbooks is for $60 where as a single piece will cost you $15.

The special pre-order discount will last until Sunday 11 April 2010, 11.59pm PST

If you Pre Order now, you sand to gain an additional 15% pre-order discount. This means each sketchbook now costs $12.75 and $51 for 5! [ Buy it Here ]

Electricity Is A Dangerous Game

27 Mar

Developing countries and emerging economies are facing challenges in properly distributing and building out their electric grids. Unfortunately energy needs are now being met by people running the black market and many are getting hurt. Some people have resorted to stealing it by creating their own makeshift access lines leaving a tangled and hazardous mess behind. The TUME concept solves these issues by creating a new infrastructure that can grow just as fast as demand.

TUME BASE stations are setup in public spaces. Anyone with a TUME ACCESS unit can plug into the base station to draw power. Credits can be purchased online, thru mobile phones, and existing brick and mortar shops. The idea is people want to be legit about their power needs. They are willing to pay for it. They just need a safe and easy way to do it.

Affordable Fabrics That Will Add an Edge

16 Mar

People are often asking me how to update their look and bring in a modern edge without going overboard.  There are plenty of ways to do this, but the best and most affordable is by having fun with accessories, trim and artwork.  Take these fun, bold and trendy fabrics from Calico Corners and make an assortment of throw pillows.  You could even trim existing pillows, the bottom of a skirt on a sofa/chair or your curtains that are just dying to be jazzed up.   If you’re feeling brave, I highly recommend re-upholstering a traditional chair with a fun ikat or geometric pattern.  Your chair will thank you later.  There are no limits, so do your room a favor and give it some life!
Take a look at some great fabrics at great prices from Calico Corners that will help you get your project underway!

Green Covered Taipei Music Center by Mario Bellini Architects

27 Feb

Green Covered Taipei Music Center by Mario Bellini Architects, taiper pop music center, mario bellini architects, green design, eco design, sustainable design, green architecture

We’re totally intrigued by this pop music center for Taipei and its striking resemblance to a rolling green hill. Conceived by Italian firm Mario Bellini Architects, the design is “a single body wrapped in a plastic ‘mantle plant’,” according to our friends at Designboom. While we aren’t sure how sustainable this plastic ‘mantle plant’ is, or even what it is for that matter, we were taken with the creative landscaping and creation of an exciting outdoor public area for the people of the Taipei. The proposed structure would also have glass passageways, letting visitors look out onto the city. If anyone has any more information about the eco-features of this center, we’d love to hear them – so share your thoughts in the comments below.
