Original Decorating Wooden Hooks For Rustic Interiors

3 Sep

For those of you in love with rustic decors, here is a fun idea from Live Farm. These original wooden hooks come in diverse shapes in order to serve various “hooking” needs. Whether they are used as clothes hangers or as support for other decorative objects (like in the first photo for example), these simple yet very creative timber elements could help build the personality of an interior. As you can see, the hooks look good no matter what room they are placed in, even if we are talking about the living-room, the bathroom or the barn. Moreover, they give away a friendly, warm and familiar feel when combined with other wooden decorating items. New Fabric-Dyeing Technique Uses Fluid-State CO2, Not Water

The vagaries of the fashion and textile industry haven’t been kind to our waterways. In fact, textile coloring and treatment accounts for 17 to 20 percent of global industrial pollution, according to The World Bank. The solution? Remove water from the dyeing equation. DyeCoo Textile Systems is a Dutch company that is doing just that with the first commercial dyeing machine to replace water with supercritical carbon dioxide — a pressurized form of the gas with unusual liquid-like properties.

Precast Concrete Bases Improve Wind Turbine Efficiency

31 Aug

A recently-released report announced that the use of precast concrete bases can actually make wind turbines sturdier, more efficient, and less resource-intensive to produce. According to the Atlas CTB White Paper, the wider footprint of precast concrete bases adds stability to the foundation of wind turbines and can reduce the amount of concrete needed to install them by 60-70%. The precast bases also make it easier to raise taller turbines into more powerful winds, and their rapid construction time means that more turbines can be built.

Stacy Zarin Goldberg

26 Aug

I’m loving the portfolio of Washington, DC based photographer Stacy Zarin Goldberg. Her photos are striking and energetic but what immediately caught my eye is that she clearly loves utilizing her client’s pets when she shoots interiors. SO CUTE!! I also have to mention the funky artwork in the first photo – love the scale but not sure if I want those dudes watching me as I sleep.

Get on the Horn!

26 Aug

Kips Bay Decorator Showhouse- room decorated by Bunny Williams- via SF Luxe

The photo above of the Bunny Williams room featuring horns as fireplace accessories only further peaked my interest in these exotic pieces of decor.  There’s just something about their curvy, dramatic shape and sleek form that I’m really drawn to.

Horns flanking a mirror on a fireplace is my favorite application but they also look great in many other forms- chairs, tables, mirrors, and even serving trays!

I went to accessorize a client’s house the other day and was dead set on bringing her a horn accessory for her coffee table, and what do you know, she beat me to  it, and already had a horn of her own!

60+ New Items at Made Goods!

12 Aug

I ordered a mirror from Made Goods for a client of mine and we have been anxiously awaiting its arrival ever since.  It came in last week and let me just tell you, it’s PHENOMENAL in person!

The Isabella (above) is so intricate and the level of detail really exceeded our expectations.  I knew it would be beautiful, but I was seriously wowed when I saw it up close and personal.  (excuse the iPhone photo- the mirror and wallpaper is not pink in person, I promise!)

Made Goods just launched a  new collection of more than sixty products and mirrors that will blow your mind!  If only I could see them all in person…

JDArchitect

12 Aug

As I’ve mentionned a couple of times, my husband and I have been doing a bit of research looking for architects to help us plan the additions we want to make to our WAY too small and WAY too boring home. Our cat-sitter used to live on a street a few blocks from us where there was one of the coolest yet simplest homes I’ve ever seen around Ottawa. We recently saw the home in Ottawa Magazine and found out it was designed by local architect John Donkin. It’s 1700 square feet and his client had 3 requirements: a garden, a visitors’ apartment, and a strong street presence. The visitors’ apartment is cantilevered sideways over the lot which creates a shaded area in summer and a covered parking spot and sheltered entrance in winter. The mix of materials on the facade is exactly what I’m looking for and the kicker is the front of the home (iron?) has rusted over time and turned the most beautiful deep orange shade (second photo found on the blog Move That Bus!!!). Check out more of his designs after the jump.

Reader request – long narrow hallway

6 Aug

It’s reader request time, and this one comes from Sarah. “I love your site, and wanted to write in with a design problem I’m facing in an NYC apartment into which I’m about to move. The apartment’s front door opens into a very long, very narrow hallway with no room for furniture and no windows. Do you have any wall decoration recommendations to create a cool entrance effect?” Here are some inspirational photos for you Sarah. Now, some are not THAT narrow and have room for a bit of furniture but I found how the spaces were designed very intriguing (ie. the Domino mag photo after the jump).

Jeffrey Gordon Smith landscape architecture

30 Jul

I love gardening and really appreciate decent landscaping when I see it. I nearly had a coronary when Jeffrey of the firm Jeffrey Gordon Smith Landscape Architecture contacted us and I had a peek at his website. His landscape design skills are incredible and so freaking creative. His firm is based in Los Osos, California, and ‘he has a strong conviction toward a “regional style”, encouraging the owners of his designs to celebrate where they live and create a stronger connection through their landscape‘. I have a slightly different mindset living so far up north (unfortunately) that I love to use tropical plants (succulents are my favourites) so I can pretend I live somewhere far warmer. LOL. In any case, I’m not sure how feasible that driveway in the photo above is for Canadian climate when it would be covered in snow at least half the year and require shoveling but I’d LOOOVE something that non-traditional.

Studio Public

13 Jul

Alistair Graham, creative director of the new, small, yet highly creative interior design company Studio Public in the UK sent us a little taste of his latest project. A seaside getaway for a city couple. Can you imagine soaking in that tub? Not to mention that shower! It’s a fabulous sleek minimal interpretation with a restrained luxury. The perfect getaway within your getaway.

P.S. The photo of the sea scene is an artwork printed to the glass screen dividing the bath and walk in shower!
