Cue the violins

14 Apr

I don’t really know what to write as an intro to this post. Basically I am stressed out and preoccupied to the max and my brain is just not functioning up to par. My day job has been REALLY busy for ages, we’re trying to get plans finished for the house which is a little tough working with an architect AND designers (both of whom are swamped), I have a French test (for said day job) the day after Easter weekend that if I don’t pass may mean having to leave my team (where I have worked for my entire career as a public servant) and go back to programming – something I REALLY don’t want to do. And I f*cking hate tests, especially verbal ones. With that whining, I leave you with some photos from Avotakka, a very cool Finnish magazine. (P.S. I really want to make a floor lamp like the one in the first photo.)

Charming L-Shaped Addition to a Seattle Residence by Shed

6 Apr

http://interiordesignsense.com/tag//

Southender Addition is a modern project designed by Shed Architects and located in Seattle, Washington. The clients needed an extra space for a bedroom and a guest bed, as well as for various storing needs. The result? An L-shaped volume which was added to the existing building, forming a tasteful and aesthetic architecture contrast. The new extension houses a bedroom, a dressing, a bathroom and a beautiful hallway with bookcase. Large windows ensure just the right amount of natural lighting needed by the owners. Moreover, the addition provides a shed for the outdoor dining table and creates an atmosphere that is perfect for socializing. Check out the “before” and “after” photo at the end of the post for a better understanding of the project and let us know if you would go for this type of home addendum.

This is It!

28 Mar

As I’m perusing the internet for design inspiration, I came across this beauty from the Elle Decor Showhouse 2010 by Jay Jeffers design. ‘ It’s hard to put into words how obsessed I am with the colors in this room. ‘ From the taupe walls down to the pink, yellow, and turquoise artwork, I am totally smitten. ‘ I’ve seen this photo before, but keep stumbling upon it by chance and have decided that the style and colors of this room are exactly what I want to incorporate into my work-in-progress living room! As they say, when you know, you know. ‘ What great inspiration! ‘ Thank you Elle Decor…

Pedestal Lamp

18 Mar

L.OOD is a pedestal lamp, a concept based on creating open forms and functions from a single refined object. It’s’ an assemblage of recycled things like lampshades, glass vases, pots, candy dishes and fruit trays. By layering these odd bits and ends together, you create a new form with new purpose purpose.

Help the People of Japan!+ A Tribute to Japan’s Ingenious Eartquake Engeneering

12 Mar

We would like to use Freshome to make a call to action. We know most of you out there would like to help the people in need in Japan, which is why we will count on your belief in solidarity and recommend a link with a few steps you can follow. From helping people reconnect with their loved ones in the area to forwarding a donation, here is where you can start. In order to be in tune with the content of our sire, we found a video filmed during the massive 8,9 earthquake that struck Japan at 2:46 pm on Friday. We were absolutely amazed to see how the buildings move slightly from left to right while in complete balance. It is not everywhere that seeing something like this is possible, which is why we would like to salute Japan’s ingenious earthquake engineering solutions. (photo via BigChief)

Design crew

5 Mar

Got a problem? Need some help? Just standing there shaking your head? Don’t know what to do? You’re not alone. Send us a link to photos of your design quandary and let the Desire to Inspire design crew help you …. that’s you lot … the readers …. get to it! You are coming up with some stellar ideas each week so it’s time to do it all over again. Besides I have a Saturday to enjoy.

“I could really use some help with finishing off my living room. The major elements (couch, love seat, ottoman, and cowhide rug) would remain intact, but I need some help filling in the accessories, especially what to do about curtains. We are hoping to add 2 low chairs, as the living room is a great room, with the kitchen and entry stairs behind where the photo was taken. I would love any ideas that people have to share. I am thinking of taking out the existing lamp and putting in a larger floor lamp in the corner (like this one).” – Jennifer

A week of stalking – Thursday simply in the city

3 Mar

Today’s stalking couldn’t be more different from yesterday’s sumptuous terrace. Same suburb but it in a simple terrace, tiny but terrific. How about that bath? And I love the simple earthy kitchen. Would love to see this house styled for a photo shoot.  Here while the link lasts. (Another stalking coming soon.)

Cozy Home Filled with Color and Charm in Barcelona

27 Feb

This inspirational home (re)decoration was realized by architect Gianni Ruggiero from Tool Studio. According to micasa, the project was developed’  in downtown Barcelona and is a true showcase of freshness and tasteful design. Sand-tone walls enhance clarity and enable a suggestive decoration, with very colorful furniture and objects. The living area is bathed in light and opens towards the dining room and kitchen. A wooden coffee table, a guitar and plenty of paintings make this room feel alive and welcoming. The other end of the house, facing the inner courtyard was reserved for installing the master bedroom connected to an adjoining room, perfectly suited for a working area. In the bathroom the fusion of ancient and modern is spectacular. The floor and walls have an interesting vintage appearance which goes well with the windows and original radiator. Be sure to have a look at the home plans (last photo of the post) for a better understanding of this crib’s structure.

Exterior ideas

20 Feb

I am in panic mode now – my trip is less than a week away and I have hardly crossed off any items on my TO DO list. AH WELL. As a result I did not have time to travel around blogland looking for my favourite photos of the week to post today. Rather, I had to spend some time digging through my photo stash looking for photos of the exterior of homes because my architect emailed the other day wanting to know what we were thinking of (we’re replacing the ugly-ass siding on the existing house too so it will be a BIG job with a hefty price tag) . I have no freaking clue what to tell him – all I know is because it’s pretty much 2 flat 2-story rectangles perhaps some of the windows could protrude a bit and at least 2 different materials could provide some visual interest. I have never had the opportunity to deal with the exterior of a home before so I figured we could just send him some photos of inspiration and he could figure something out for now. I narrowed it down to the photos below. If anyone has suggestions please feel free to leave them in the comments (plans we have so far for the new house are here).

Freedom Autumn 2011

19 Feb

Here are the last of my snaps of Freedom’s new Autumn collection. Contemporary, clean lined and urban. I’m loving the grey pinstriped dining chair. My photo just doesn’t do it justice. I’m scheming on how to include it in my black bedroom redo. The cane canopy chair is a great statement piece as is the oversized red lacquer Chinese chair. I can’t wait to see the collection in store mid March. There was so much to take in on launch day I think I need to take my time and visit them all again. Thanks again to Freedom for allowing me this sneak peek (and the chance to schmooze with Australian and NZ magazine editors and stylists).
