We’ve all been in bathroom stalls where poetry (at least by a loose definition) has littered the walls. But who’d have thought that poetry in the potty could make you use less toilet paper? A study by the research center Japan Toilet Labo showed that it can make a big difference – cutting down paper use by 20%….

Ahh they don’t build things like they used. The glory days of European architecture make the cheaply built mega-mansions of late a difficult pill to swallow. For a glimpse of what once was you need only jaunt over to Italy to see the stunning ancient architecture built in the glory days of Venetian society. The Artisans Consortium International (ACI), a group of classically trained plaster artisians is bringing this ancient green art of plastering to some modern buildings….

Come next May, if you were to look out across the mighty waterway running through the middle of Istanbul, you might see shoots of green growth rising up from the endless urban sprawl and crossing the Bosphorus Bridge that connects the city’s European and Asian sides. This is no post-apocalyptic scenario of nature run amok in a ruined world, but, much to the contrary, one artist’s vision of peaceful connection.

Economical Crisis and the Bilbao Effect

19 Jan

During the last few months we have been constantly featuring amazing works in ArchDaily, which show the good state of some economies, at least until the economical crisis started to hit.

With the  announced tallest tower in the world now on hold, and while big firms in the US are laying off a large amount of their staff (I´ve seen a lot of coleagues with a lot of free time lately….), the inmediate future doesn´t sound promising. This crisis puts and end to an era of mega developments started by the Bilbao Guggenheim by Frank O Ghery, that brought a bonanza that created the stararchitects and put Dubai on the spotlight.

Will the projects that are now on the developer´s desk be put in motion after the crisis is over?

Robert Campbell wrote an interesting article on this on the Boston Globe that i recommend checking out.

Time To Grow, Cut and Use More Wood

John Laumer wrote an important post about Canadian forest policy promoting the logging of pine beetle infested forests. He thought it was misguided; I am not so sure, and have promoted the use of wood in buildings as a great way of sequestering CO2, of actually building a carbon-positive architecture. Over in the UK, Chris Goodall writes in <a href=”http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2009/jan/08/benefits-using-growing…

Would a Fridge Curtain Save Electricity, or Should You Just Unplug?

10 Jan

(Photo from Metblogs)

This is a simple, clever idea that you can try for your refrigerator. Hang a piece of clear plastic on each shelf, to avoid cold air escaping when you open the fridge door, which will save some electricity. You could use a shower curtain cut to the right size.

Then I thought: “Why not unplug the old $%&# altogether?” How much energy would I save?…
