Douglas Friedman

The last time we featured Douglas Friedman’s work a few comments popped up revealing that not only are his photographs gorgeous but he’s a looker too. (I think the word was hot.) Having googled for photos of Douglas I can now confirm the veracity of the comments but more importantly ;) it’s obvious from these new shots that Mr Friedman is still one super talented snapper. Favourites? The minimalist white rooms that thanks to the wonderful lighting are warm and inviting. The man has a fabulous eye!

Tim Beddow

26 Feb

Whether it’s portraying the freshness of a contemporary space or revealing the aged splendor of a country farmhouse, I can’t get enough of the soft light and gentle beauty of Tim Beddow’s photographs. He understands the individuality of these homes. Definitely not cookie cutter. Soft shadows, bright light, rich colour and texture, beautiful rough texture. Tim captures it all.

Mark Eden Schooley

19 Feb

Can I describe photographs as clean and minimal? Refreshingly simple but cleverly composed. Spare elegant spaces captured in an instant. Messages cleverly conveyed through a lens. This room is graceful, that design is effortless, unforced and natural. All these thoughts tumble through my mind as I view photographer Mark Eden Schooley’s work. Honest and beautiful. Real and remarkable. P.S. Has green ever been so beautiful?

Sarah Dorio

16 Feb

Passion and a love. A belief in beauty and the dreams of a child. Cameras and travel and pictures and passion and a love. A love of photographs and images of other worlds, other people . Photographer Sarah Dorio’s work is all about a journey from her first camera at age eight to these gorgeous images of stunning homes. You see it’s Sarah’s passion that makes these rooms “pop”. (Oooh am I actually going to say passion pop? Ooooh yes I did!) The heart and soul of photographers are often seen in the images they capture. Do these rooms speak to you? Maybe because Sarah Dorio caught their essence through her lens.

P.S Don’t miss her other portfolios. Stunning!

Residance O / Andrea Tognon architecture

Architects: Andrea Tognon architecture
Location: Teolo, Italy
Collaborator: Roberta Cazzaniga
Design Year: 2008-2009
Construction Year: 2009-2010
Photographs: Andrea Tognon

The building we were call to refurbish was built in the 70’s as an imitation of vernacular architecture of the Veneto countryside area. Was looking pretty fake. The floor plan was a square with a missing corner (so was an L shape). The roof was a concrete slab outing out in a very inelegant and with bad proportions.

So we decide to add the missing corner to complete the square floor plane. Because the total redefinition of the insulation parameter we reshape the building profile, cutting the old roof edge and redesigning the junction between roof and perimetral walls. The entire interior layout was redesign, all the walls and roof insulated, the heating system switched to solar energy.

A large operable skylight marks the center of the room.

Architects: CEBRA

In Cooperation with: JJW Architects and Kollision
Client: The Municipality of Gentofte
Project Area: 25,148 + 52,584 sq. ft. new building and rebuilding
Project Year: 2005-2008

Søgaard School is one of the municipality of Gentoftes school expansion projects, which CEBRA developed in cooperation with the users of the institution. Søgaard School is a special school for socially challenged children with general learning disabilities. The project is based on the school’s value program and the needs expressed during workshops with staff and parents. It has been a goal to collect school scattered buildings in a coherent structure that enhances the natural opportunities for collaboration across school departments.

The architectural intention of the project is to provide elements that link to the neighborhood – its scale and characteristics. The new building is therefore divided into sections in the plan as a duplication of the existing building’s footprint. These are shifted in relation to each other and vary in size. Each section has its own pitched roof – a recognizable form in the surrounding residential neighborhood, and by letting the pitched roofs have the same direction as the existing building, reveals a picture of several joined villas.

House Q / Vaillo + Irigaray

13 May

Architects: Vaillo + Irigaray / Antonio Vaillo + Juan Luis Irigaray
Location: Gorraiz, Navarra, Spain
Project manager: Ibón Ibarlucea Ochandiano, architect
Graphic design of facades: Alex Viladrich, ALDRICH
Riggers: José Ingacio Sola y Julián Damboriena
Structure: Gonzalo Díez
Contractor: GOSA S.L.
Project year: 1998
Finished year: 2004
Photographs: José Manuel Cutillas, Albert Font, Joan Mundó

Location: Many small plots around a golf course,  mis-ordered devices external to the individual qualities of the environment, backed, resulting in an almost monstrous mix.

Adaptation is key into abstraction mimetic. The green totally invaded the facade, and the house disappears: as a large magnifying glass focusing on a piece of grass.

Internally an impluvium (water, light and oxygen) defines the organization, around which living gravitates. As in Alice’s house, it becomes a hole where golf balls slip.

Exploitation Center for Forest Fire Fighters / N+B Architectes

13 May

Architects: N+B Architectes / Jacques BRION, Elodie NOURRIGAT
Location: Brissac, France
Associated Architect: Julien WAFFLART
Client: Conseil Général de l’Hérault
Delegated Client: Hérault Aménagement
Structural Consultant: SOTEC INGENIERIE
Constructed Area: 1,619 sqm
Budget: US $ 2.64 M
Year: 2008
Photographs: N+B Architectes

The exploitation center and the building for forest fire fighters, takes place on a site to be located in the very heart of a huge green zone. It is composed of hills covered with scrublands and with vast agricultural plains which transcribe the very specific character of this region. These natural elements are a major asset.

The project tries to join as a line of supplementary slope which complies to by-pass and protect major elements of the landscape, such as the big trees or the standing banks. So protecting these recognizable elements, the building goes from the basement of the hill and develops three main facades: the roof, the East façade and the West one. The whole is homogenous, thanks to the choice of the “corten”, a textured matter, the tones and nuances of which are in harmony with the environment.
