Furniture on casters

10 Feb

Estelle wrote us recently with a request: “I like furniture on casters a lot. I would appreciate if you can have a post showing how imaginative (DIY) people have added casters to their furniture.” This was a tough request, especially looking for imaginative uses for casters, but regardless, here are a pile of photos I managed to find in my stash.

World’s Tallest Building – Empty

Burj Khalifa – Closed

The world’s tallest skyscraper has unexpectedly closed just a month after it opened. The viewing area had been the only portion of the 2,717 foot building open to the public and it is now indefinitely closed amid Dubai’s struggle to revive it’s economy.

Electrical problems are at least partly to blame for the closure of the Burj Khalifa.  But little has been reported by the spire’s owner leaving it unclear if any of the empty floors will be open any time soon.

From Archinet:

The precise cause of the £960m ($1.5bn) Dubai skyscraper’s temporary shutdown remained unclear. In a brief statement responding to questions, the building’s owner, Emaar Properties, blamed the closure on “unexpected high traffic”, but then suggested that electrical problems were also at fault.

“Technical issues with the power supply are being worked on by the main and subcontractors and the public will be informed upon completion,” the company said, adding it is “committed to the highest quality standards at Burj Khalifa”.

Reader’s home

9 Feb

For as long as I can remember I have wanted to live in a converted loft (and this desire has grown in the past 2 years since living in a 12′ wide home). What a pleasure to find an email in my inbox from Peter Wagner of Germany who wanted to share his loft with our readers. It is located in an old factory and in one year Peter converted the space HIMSELF into a spacious and cosy home that I am utterly envious of. Here are a couple before photos that show how much work he took on:

And now photos of the newly renovated space that he did such a wonderful job with. I especially love his use of Ikea storage units throughout. (Photos by the talented Michael Berger).

Beautiful and Fresh 81 Sq Meter Apartment in Sweden

With vivid colors, a strong appearance and stretching over a relatively small area, this apartment really stands out A funky, open floor plan connects the  kitchen and the  living room. There are two bedrooms, one of which features a double bed, a bedside table, huge windows and a practical wardrobe wall with sliding doors and mirrors which scores high in matters of storage space. The slightly smaller bedroom is similar: it also accommodates a double bed,  a desk and a  built-in spacious shelving system. The living-room is cozy and airy, colorful, perfect for socializing. There are also cables for surround sound systems and concealed wiring for flat screen TV and media equipment. The kitchen has stainless-steel units and it is connected to the living-room. Check out the photos and tell us what you think! -via Innerspec

Anna Williams

Dreams. I dream of rooms like these. I imagine that I’m climbing those stairs. (I wonder what I’ll find up there?) I also dream of being able to take photos like these. To be able to convey the joy of a family’s room, the allure of the aspirational, the beauty and warmth of a space, that elusive dream. Photographer Anna Williams is a spinner of dreams or is she a dream catcher? She’s a fabulous photographer. I know that for sure.

Stuart McIntyre

Jaw-dropping, awe-inspiring, mind-blowing…anyone with even the slightest appreciation for interior photography will likely use these adjectives when they see the photos below of Danish photographer Stuart McIntyre. His photography has me so mesmerized I may have to do an encore tomorrow. :)

Joanna Moorehouse

2 Feb

When you love what you’re doing it shows in your work. Finnish (and half English) photographer Joanna Moorehouse obviously loves what she does. Her work is refreshing and bright, real and believable. These are rooms that we could walk right into and make ourselves at home. Joanna’s photos make us feel that way and that’s her work done.

Rustic Sparkle

28 Jan

I recently selected this sink for a client’s teeny-tiny Powder Bathroom.  It is so beautiful in person.  I love the hand crafted nature of the bowl, and the way the imperfect hammered finish refracts (is that the correct science term?) light in different directions.

Here is my drawing of the narrow sink wall (sorry for the small size, if I enlarge it, it skews the drawing).

This porcelain tile mosaic (also gorgeous in person) will be installed vertically on the entire wall (in the lighter color).

This is a sconce option.  I’m still looking for another mosaic tile for the splash behind the sink, as well as a decorative mirror.  The sink base cabinet is also still up in the air…it’s a process, people :)

I just had to share some more photos of Native Trails’ sinks…I really love the hammered nickel finish because it can go traditional or contemporary!

And the piece de resistance…a GORGEOUS bathtub:

Charleston Homes remodel

27 Jan

Nataleigh emailed Jo and I the other day asking our advice on a vintage chair she was thinking of purchasing (which she thankfully did because it was REALLY cute) and also sent us a link to photos (taken by Chris Colegrove) of a home her mother, Wendy Roach, remodeled for someone a few years ago. The name of her company is Charleston Homes, located in Fort Worth, Texas. It is a beautiful house with stunning views. I can’t decide what I prefer more – the deck and huge party dock, the 2 story wall of windows, the front door, the open kitchen shelving, the HUGE bathroom…(And Nataleigh, a 24 year old recent college graduate, has promised to send us photos of her first home that her mom also remodeled.
