New book!

New book!

I was stoked to get my hands on a new book (out November 1st, from Clarkson Potter) by Celerie Kemble called Black and White (And a Bit in Between). Being a HUGE fan of black and white decor, this book was completely for me. It’s got a bit of everything, from classic to rustic to über modern. And I was pleasantly surprised to find some of my favourite black and white spaces – including photo #3 below (which Celerie also loves, as she has had it hung above her desk for years). There’s even a photo of Celerie’s to-die-for bathroom (photo #2 below). This book is a keeper, and I would highly recommend it to anyone with a love for this colour scheme. Get yourself a copy here or here (among others).

For Celerie Kemble and her acclaimed designer peers, the possibilities of black and white home decor are endless and suit any aesthetic. In BLACK AND WHITE (AND A BIT IN BETWEEN), Celerie welcomes readers into more than 75 homes, sharing advice on choosing the best paints and finishes; adding patterns, accessories, and collections; building an entire room scheme based on inspiration from nature; and even choosing the perfect accent colors.

P.S. More photos from the book and some Ottawa news after the jump

And for some quick local news – Mike from The Modern Shop emailed me that he is having a HUGE sale at the end of November. As I am a lighting whore and his shop sells all of my favourite brands, I’m booking it in my calendar. I think I’ll stock pile some fixtures (and maybe yet another chair) for the new house. :-)

London real estate stalking #1

26 Oct

The kind folks over at Domus Nova (estate agency extraordinaire) must have sensed how swamped I am these days so they ever so graciously sent over some photos of some of their latest homes for sale. This first one if fantastic for the most part – but I am not loving the sterile kitchen and what’s the purpose of 2 dining tables? The distortion thanks to the camera lenses used would certainly have me calling us Domus and asking for an appointment to view in person. I do however adore the bathroom, staircase, wood stove setup and furnishings (helloooooo TWO Papa Bear chairs!!). I’ll be posting another home shortly so stay tuned!

Just gets better with time

25 Oct

Rooms ripped from the latest pages of the your favourite magazine, right? Would you believe that this Antwerp home by Vincent Van Duysen was designed in 2001. It’s so fresh. So now but still so timeless. Fads come and go but 10 years later we can look at these photos and say not only fashion forward for the time but just right for now.

My dream home

25 Oct

Over the weekend my husband was researching Ottawa architects online, and came across one of our favourites, John Donkin (I featured him last year). He found a recently completed home in his portfolio that is EXACTLY what we’ve been dreaming about. We drove by it on Saturday and after picking our jaws up off the ground we managed to snap some photos of it with a cell phone like a couple of stalkers. The exterior is perfect for us – tall and narrow-ish with a huge garage (it is really deep and wide once you drive in) where my husband can hang out and do guy stuff. These folks have a fairly wide lot so they were able to plan for alot of windows on the more private side of the house, which we may not be able to get away with given our narrow lot.

I love that the facade is not made up of 8 different materials in 8 different colours like all the other modern homes going up around Ottawa. (BLEH). The simplicity of it is perfection, and draws your attention to the wonderful details like ALL THE WINDOWS.
Now, I have not really taken a good look at the interior as I am up to my eyeballs in French studies so this post is more about the shape and the exterior but I thought I’d show you the photos from John’s website of both so you can see what this fabulous home is all about (after the jump).

TGIF…and I leave you with the following photos from a real estate listing on Bolaget. The details in this apartment are fairly ornate (ie. ceiling, floor and wood stove), and then there’s this gorgeous vintage dress hanging on the wall that made me sigh and smile.

A fun family home and studio

17 Oct

I saw this house tour on Dos Family recently and fell in love. It is in fact 2 tours – the studio and the home of artist and fashion illustrator Lisa Grue. The workspace is so open and bright and would be an amazing place to bring out one’s creativity. Lisa’s home is equally bright and colourful and would be the perfect place to raise a family. The studio is up first, and her home is after the jump. (Photos by Jenny Brandt).

Sergio Ghetti

14 Oct

Happy Friday everyone! Hope you all get to enjoy some great weather and fun activities. I will be taking a break from studying tomorrow night for dinner out and a Kings of Leon concert (LOVE them Followills!). I leave you today with some fine images from Italian photographer Sergio Ghetti. I find portfolios like Sergio’s very intriguing. The spaces are rather raw and natural (he even had the opportunity to photograph a grotto doubling as someone’s home!). It is a nice break from the overly styled photos you find in magazines where everything is far too perfect. I am not a fan of perfection.

Simple

12 Oct

Jason Gibney created this beautifully crafted apartment in Bronte for his family. Minimalist. Streamlined. Honest in its materials. Clever in its use of space. Look closely and you will realise that he has extended into the roof space of his typical “six pack” apartment block. As for the kitchen hidden behind the wall … brilliant! Jason is Managing Associate Director at Sydney architectural firm Tobias Partners. All I wish for (besides the ability to live so simply) is for larger photos! Via the Houses Awards.

Round Top Round Up- Fall 2011

3 Oct

I spent last Saturday and yesterday in Round Top, Texas. It’s that time again – the big, huge, massive Antiques Show that has now spread practically from’ Brenham’ all the way toWarrenton. I love that I live a mere hour and a half away. They were two very busy full days so I don’t have tons of photos (and these are from my iPhone), but I still wanted to share. These show(s) are really a must see if you love furniture & antiques!
