Tower City, another concept from the 2010 eVolo Skyscraper Competition, re-envisions the city of Marseilles as a stacked skyscraper that sits on stilts above the water. Rather than letting cities spread out as population increases, a the design calls for a new city to be created out on the water, complete with work, housing, transportation and amenities. The futuristic development is based on a stacked framework built using recycled building materials from the old city.

The OOoo Chair Uses Zero Materials

6 Mar

We love seeing new furniture ideas that implement used, discarded, eco-friendly and recycled materials, but it’s not often that we find a chair that uses zero materials in construction. The OOoo Chair is an innovative concept that presses us to consider all of the energy and material waste issues associated with furniture production and disposal, but with a bit of amusement. So what do you have to do to get your hands on one of these chairs? Cut two leg-wide holes ergonomically apart, line them with recycled plastic, and you’ve just made your own OOoo Chair!

There’s no doubt that Google Earth has given us all a new perspective. Apart from being able to see our own houses from above (weird!), we can even monitor global deforestation and track migrating animals. And while US Secretary of Energy Stephen Chu would like us all to paint our rooftops white - sending excess heat and blinding glares back into space – artist Molly Dilworth is interested in a Google Earth eco-venture that’s a bit more colorful - vivid rooftop paintings that can be seen from outer space!

Architecture is knowledge, history, research and trend. This is literally evident in Book Cell, an octagonal building made entirely from books that was installed in the Modern Art Center in Lisboa. Slovakian artist Matej Kren built an octagonal framework, filled it with books and removed it, leaving a symmetrical, enclosed room of stacked literature.

Isn’t it great when you don’t have to sacrifice beauty for sustainability? Case in point: Bio-Glass, a striking material made from 100% post consumer recycled materials. Reader Jacostarubio just tipped us off about it saying:

Bio-Glass offers a clean technology hard surface material without compromise on aesthetics. 100% recycled glass: no colorants or other additives. 100% recyclable: can be placed into the same recycling container as drink bottles. Post consumer recycled content may help contribute to LEED® credits with USGBC project certification.”

Thanks Jacotarubio!

In Andrew’s words, “the ECO Traveler concept is a shed office on wheels, specially designed to be towed by a car, van or pickup by means of a bumper or frame hitch. The ECO traveler provides all the comforts and necessities of a home while on the road.” More and more people are looking at more mobile lifestyles. Coupled with the desire to live more eco-friendly, there likely is a future market for living spaces such as these. Via – Andrew Scherr.

Vespa Rocking Horse, vespa rocking horse, diy, recycled materials, upcycled vespa, green toys

This ain’t your grandpa’s rocking horse! Well, okay, it actually is – sorta. This beautiful baby blue Vespa was recycled by one loving grandfather into a totally revved up “rocking horse” for his grandson. This DIY gift is so rad that we would love it even if it wasn’t green, but it is, which makes it twice as nice!

Planter Wall Tiles by Maruja Fuentes

9 May

Presented at Milan Furniture Fair 2009, Green Pockets is an innovative idea designed by Maruja Fuentes a designer from Puerto Rico. Green pockets are ceramic tiles which fuse nature with the interior space, improving both air quality and health. They attach to the wall to create the illusion as if they were actually growing from them. The tiles, made from recycled materials, serve as planters and their unique shape allows them to interlock, thereby creating different patterns depending on the vegetation planted. The pockets bring a soul-soothing dose of greenery and nature to an interior space, improving a room’s aesthetic and air quality. – Via – Thedesignblog
