Eco-friendly, sustainable design, pop-up restaurant by Joost Bakker for the Melbourne Food & Wine Festival. The building and furniture are made from reclaimed or recycled materials, organic waste is composted and feeds the herbs, no mains electricity (it’s generated and fuelled by pure, unrefined canola oil), wall cladding and structural bracing is all-natural, formaldehyde-free plywood. (You can read more on Joost’s site). Raising grid like around the structure is Joost’s signature reo bar grid gardens. Beth generously shared these photos with us after her visit to the restaurant and I guarantee as great as these shots are her food shots will have you salivating.

White outdoor furniture looks so sharp in a green space, and these pieces by Bysteel are just beautiful. Made with matte white lacquered aluminum, these outdoor furniture ranges from chunky and solid to sweet and delicate. It’s great how the tables have room for planters in the center perfect for savory herbs, pretty flowers or even a tree! We love the loungy Dita chairs, cozy enough for the indoors as well. And how about the Pli piece? Seating and table in one, the design is daintily modern – almost origami-like in the way it folds out to serve different functions. If you are looking for an elegant floor lamp with a chic presence, take a look at Idaa and Anemoni lamps by Bysteel. Anemoni is described as a ‘light-emitting column’ and is made in matte white lacquered aluminum with a stainless steel base. Idaa has a more traditional floor lamp shape and the shade boasts an intricate yet lovely pattern. It is also made with a lacquered aluminum but comes in matte white or black. These items are produced with recycled materials, keeping sustainability in mind during the whole process, as are all other Bysteel products. Steve Shaheen has recently completed an original seating unit entitled Metrobench and created using 5000 Metrocards. Here is the concept behind the design as explained by Steve: “Metrobench is a conceptually-driven sculptural seating element using recycled materials (New York City Metrocards).’ I was inspired to use these discarded objects–at once very personal and expendable–in a way that reflects the manner in which mass transit joins many diverse lives into a single moment or path together.’ ’ The Metrocard represents movement for people;’ Metrobench is a point of rest for people. Millions of New Yorkers, with their separate lives, are brought together on the transit system every day. In this sculptural seat, each card, with its distinct and intimate history is stitched together into a fluid tapestry. Metrobench was assembled completely by hand, card by card.’ ’ Using Craigslist, I harnessed the people of New York to help me gather 5,000 Metrocards in under a week.’ ’ There is something very personal about handling so many small belongings that were once riding around in peoples’ pockets. There are untold personal stories in that inconspicuous, flimsy plastic.” Did you ever think Metrocards could be this practical?

Using wood and recycled materials, the Sismo bathroom concept has an appealing eco design. It’s part of a collection at Delpha called “Collections Inédites”, which means it’s still in the concept phase. The look is inviting, natural and modern. The designers were inspired by the notion – “If we took the time to live”. Many features bring nature to mind, such as the tree-like lamp that is part of the vanity, which also serves as a place to hang things and holds a mirror. Or the delicate blue climbing vines as a decor feature repeated on certain items. We especially love the idea of an illuminated mirror, equipped with shelves and a stylish clock. Sk8ter boys (and girls) will want to check out these gorgeous iPhone 4 cases recycled from skateboards. A limited edition collaboration between Grove Made artist Lindsay Jo Holmes of MapleXO, the cases were created by cutting old skateboards into narrow strips and gluing them back together to create beautiful, rainbow patterns. Each case is unique and there are only 50 in all, so get ‘em while they’re hot!

Who didn’t love playing with Legos and Construx as a kid? Now that we’ve grown up, 3form has made the adult equivalent: Ditto, a modular cross-shaped product that forms together to create partitions, sculptural center pieces and wall art.
