Michael Cornelissen’s Brilliant Bowls Made From Colored Pencils

Dutch designer Michael Cornelissen has created a beautiful new use for classic hexagonal pencils by arranging them into brilliantly-hued bowls. The pencils are held by a central connector created from laser-sintered polyamide using new 3D print production methods. This leaves you the fun activity of choosing a set of pencils to finish forming the bowl — and if you ever need a writing tool you can simply pluck one from the bowl’s bouquet!

Cool coffee shops are a dime a dozen, but finding a place that’s designed with function, sustainability and ambiance in mind? Not so easy. Vancouver-based Thatcher’s Coffee takes sustainably-designed interior spaces up a notch. Spotted over at Design Sponge, the beautifully furnished shop boasts chairs upholstered in coffee sacks, planters made from recycled coffee cans, and lights constructed from coffee pots — details that ensure patrons would be hard-pressed to lose sight of the life cycle of the cup of brew sitting before them.

The latest design by Chicago artist Trevor O’Neil is a funky console created for San Francisco-based DJ, Shoddy Lynn. The incredible DJ destination has been constructed using recycled materials and consists of a scrap wood frame fused with vintage hardware found on eBay. By combining a mix of different discarded materials, O’Neil not only kept costs down, but created a very eco-friendly and unique, retro-industrial piece for his client’s warehouse loft.

Bar Stools made from Scrap and Reclaimed Wood

3 Aug

The idea of furniture made from sustainable materials is catching on fast, but as with many products that use recycled materials, they often tend to work out more expensive than the non-sustainable variety, which can be a little frustrating to say the least.
However there are alternatives and these bar stools made from off cuts of wood is prime example of how scrap materials can be made into something wonderful and practical too! The wood had been used in the furniture trade, but these pieces are left over and ordinarily would have been discarded as waste. It was a firm of architects that came up with the idea of bundling off cuts of wood together and these bundles were sanded down before filling the gaps with wood putty, followed by a coating of linseed oil before a wax sealant is applied. The design came from a challenge laid down as part of the State of Design Festival in Australia, where architects were asked to use recycled materials to make design features for a developed bar.

‘Pile on Game’ Creates Stackable Stones from Waste Wood

24 Jul

The last time we checked, Jenga wasn’t constructing their pieces from sustainable wood, but here’s a clever design that takes a game of strategic block stacking to an eco-friendly level. Created by designers Mamoru Fukui, Daimon Kanno and Yuta Fuki, the “Pile on Game” is a set of nine stones made from factory waste wood cutoffs, hand-sanded and polished to create multi-faceted flat surfaces with an attractive sheen. While just nine stones to a set, the potential to stack and challenge your friends’ dexterity is endless.
