Astonishing Campus Event Arena Built Out Of Beer Boxes

2 Sep

This unusual pavilion is called BOXEL and was designed by the students from the University of Applied Sciences in Detmold, Germany. Henri Schweynoch, together with his architecture team won a local competition with this project which is soon to house college concerts, presentations and other type of events. The surprising thing about this small arena is the fact that it is not built using common materials, but it consists of beer boxes. That’s right, in order to host campus events, 2000 beer boxes were temporarily “sacrificed” and were given a fun shape and a new meaning. We think the overall geometry of this pavilion is original and surprising. We salute this idea and awaiting more and more student projects on Freshome, hopefully involving recycling as well. -via Arch Daily

1 Sep

gessi-trimillimetri-showerhead.JPG

International company Gessi is doing amazing things with water, and its latest innovation in new shower heads is so sleek and slim, it’s hard to believe it actually works! The Tremillimetri showerhead and shower column is just three millimeters thick, but it packs plenty of modern fashion and function into that barely there measurement. This contemporary two-dimensional shower fixture boasts a basic rectangular or rounded shape that will never go out of style, which is enhanced by an elegant, hyper-polished finish. A robust, revitalizing rain-shower freefalls from this blade-thin fixture, which also incorporates an LED light for some added oomph. Proving that less really is more, the Tremillimetri showerhead takes modern minimalism to new levels of luxury. Check out these wall-mounted shower heads and shower columns by visiting Gessi.

Crucifix Surge Suppressor: Shocking or Practical?

1 Sep

Providing “comprehensive protection from evil, power surges, and AC contamination.”, this unusual electrical extension comes from architect Alexander Pincus and was designed for Means of Production. What you can observe in the pictures below is a surge protector shaped like a crucifix which has no less than 12 outlets. The project’s name is “Power”, which does not come as a surprise, considering the amount of energy it can offer indirectly. The product can also accommodate oversize adapters, ones that don’t usually fit in a common single power outlet. We have to admit we were a bit surprised to see the shape of this surge protector, but hey, perhaps the designer was not so much trying to shock, but rather offer a practical solution. What do you believe his intention was?- via Dezeen

Cheeky Boxes Modular Storage Unit Can Change Face Every Day

31 Aug

The cloud-like shelves we’ve shown you yesterday looked great but they aren’t a perfect storage solution for all the things you might want to store at any given time. That’s why today we have a more practical design for you and like always, modular designs seem to be the best fit for such storage problems. The Cheeky Boxes in the images here can be neatly arranged in any room and they can take almost any shape you wish. Bored with a particular display? All you have to do is move around those Cheeky Boxes and change the overall setup. Then rinse and repeat every time a change of face is needed; after all we have modular shelves here! Just make sure you keep those boxes in perfect equilibrium as you’d certainly hate to see them fall allover the place! Via Process

Mind-blowing Houseboat Living in the Middle of Hamburg, Germany

31 Aug

Living on water is so exotic and so unusual that more and more people are willing to give it a try. This mind-blowing residence comes from Rost Niderehe Architects and combines the comfort of a modern home with the shape and eccentricity of living on a boat. We think the most fascinating aspect of this project is its location. This boat house lies in the middle of Hamburg and it is surrounded by the Eilbek-canal. When its inhabitants get tired of the landscape, they can move their home a few meters to the left or to the right by using a tug. This residence has two levels also known as the upper deck and lower deck that host the living and working areas. Once inside, there is little trace that may lead one to believe this is a house build on water. The interior design is spotless and the decorative elements are simply surprising. Living in the middle of nature in your large city without being a part of the urban racket- how great is that?

Get on the Horn!

26 Aug

Kips Bay Decorator Showhouse- room decorated by Bunny Williams- via SF Luxe

The photo above of the Bunny Williams room featuring horns as fireplace accessories only further peaked my interest in these exotic pieces of decor.  There’s just something about their curvy, dramatic shape and sleek form that I’m really drawn to.

Horns flanking a mirror on a fireplace is my favorite application but they also look great in many other forms- chairs, tables, mirrors, and even serving trays!

I went to accessorize a client’s house the other day and was dead set on bringing her a horn accessory for her coffee table, and what do you know, she beat me to  it, and already had a horn of her own!

How Silly

26 Aug

Kids of all ages are sporting the latest craze to sweep the nation: Silly Bandz.  These small, pliable pre-formed rubber band bracelets come in all shapes and colors, each pack individually themed.  If you’re into baseball, princesses, even the Chicago Bears…there’s a pack of Silly Bandz for you!

With my daughter recently sporting her own variety, I realized the color ways of each pack are pretty well paired.  After reading the September issue of House Beautiful, the main theme being color, I decided to take a look and see if the Silly Band color ways correlated with interior color ways…and sure enough they do!  Check out some of the matches below…not so silly after all!  But don’t at all feel limited by these selected color ways; google Silly Bandz to see many more collections and colors of this crazy trend.

Modern Approach to Classic Comfort : Doda Chair

24 Aug

Doda Chair was designed by Ferruccio Laviani for Molteni & C and is a modern interpretation of the classic French bergère. You are looking at a very inviting armchair that can be easily recognized due to its unique shape. Straight lines are combined with interesting curves to create a “sliding” design, one that is able to offer its user a visual satisfaction as well. The Doda Chair comes with a base that can be either fixed or movable, it all depends on the needs of the customer. The color palette is diverse and so is the upholstering material. As you can see in the images below, there is a leather finish available as well. A complementary cushion can also be ordered. “Easy Puff” can transform this chair into a more comfortable lounger.- via 3rings
