Power – When You Need It

12 Mar

Blessed with uninterrupted power supply in a city like Mumbai, its ironic that the capital city of New Delhi has to rely on invertors because of the frequent outages. Lights, fans and appliances are no longer the basics, it’s stuff like cellphones, laptops and portable devices that demand energy consumption in a average household. Addressing this need to bridge the gap of supply and consumption is the Ovia, a power reserve that illuminates and juices up devices when needed.

Features:

  • Illuminate homes with reserve power battery that charges when the electricity is running.
  • Charge cellphones and laptops with the reserve power.
  • Carry each unit independently, whether if it is to the kitchen or the bedroom.
  • Afford a unit of OVIA in homes because of its low cost to manufacture and package.
  • Access replacement parts (i.e. battery) easily.

Sarah emailed to share her house.

We have just finished (but not completely styled) a renovation of our 1880s workers cottage in Adelaide, South Australia . As a bit of an amateur designer, I drafted a plan and gave it to an architect whose house I’d seen at an open inspection 5 years previously. I tracked her down (Sophie Fielder) and when we met for the first time couldn’t believe our eyes when we discovered we had the same photos in our scrap books! We even had photos from the internet of houses in other states! Due to budget constraints and the love of a challenge, I project managed the job with our builder and we’re thrilled with the result. We wanted to create a home with a slightly industrial/warehouse/barn feel that was practical and didn’t waste space.

The garden is yet to grow but already it is a sanctuary with birds and chooks (over the back fence!) waking us up each morning and we absolutely adore the  50 year old olive tree right outside our bedroom window.

I’ve already informed Sarah to expect me any moment, bags in hand, because I’m moving in. What a wonderful marriage of old and new.

Sophie Maillot-Juillet

21 Dec

Christmas is only 4 sleeps away and thankfully I finally finished my Christmas shopping. Every year I say I’ll get it done early and it NEVER happens. Wishful thinking. Now I’m trying to get some baking out of the way. I made some butter tart shortbreads last night and they actually may have turned out okay. (Phew!) Anyway, hope you’re all on track with your holiday “to do” lists and have a bit of peace and calm before the big day. Perhaps I give you a bit of a break from the chaos with some soothing photos from the website of French interior stylist and journalist Sophie Maillot-Juillet.

Ingenious Storage Locker Hidden in a Fake Support Column

15 Dec

For today we decided to showcase this brilliant storing solution from Sophie Mense: a capacious locker concealed in a support column. The incredible “product” consists of two distinct elements, an elegant Cedar wood cabinet and a Carrara marble pedestal which can be moved around in order to access the locker more easily. Here are some of Sophie’s words describing the project: I have chosen to work with a shape that gets absorbed by the space; the column, a constructive element of the house. A column is also a monument to impress, to remember important events that may not be forgotten. The column as a monument and the column as a constructive element are like the equivalent of my Column, but in the size and scale that fits to our interior. The original furniture piece is custom made for each interior and is a daring and functional idea for both private and public spaces. What do you guys think of it?

Column Storage Concept Levitates; or Hangs From the Ceiling

11 Dec

Admit it, you always wanted at least a piece of furniture capable of doing some levitation to impress your friends. And if you didn’t, well, you’re still going to enjoy the Column. As you can see in the images below the Column is an out-of-the-box storage solution that simply hangs from the ceiling giving the impression that it has some levitating skills. Each Column is custom made for a special interior and consists of two parts, the marble pedestal at the bottom and the actual cedar wood cabinet that’s supposed to help you store stuff around. The pedestal gives the impression that the cabinet is floating on top of it but it will also provide plenty of support when it comes to reaching those top shelves. Anyone ready to order his or her own Column? Via Sophie Mensen
