Nicola Marc

I have been a big fan of Montreal-based Nicola Marc‘s styling for years, since I first started religiously reading shelter magazines. She has worked for all of my favourite magazines (all of which I have/had subscriptions for) like Canadian Home & Country, Canadian House & Home, Style At Home, Chocolat etc. Needless to say her portfolio is filled with gorgeously styled spaces that are without a doubt magazine worthy.

Walls of wood

2 Oct

I was thinking about doing a blog favourites post today as I typically do on Sundays but I am a bit too distracted to spend the time blog surfing. You see, back in April I mentioned (ok, bitched about) a French oral test I had at work. Unfortunately I did not get the grade I needed, and since then I have had no French training (due to lack of a training budget). All of a sudden on Tuesday I found out I am permitted full time training for the month of October, then I have to take the test, and once again I need to pass the freaking thing or potentially lose the position I have been working towards for the past 8 years. No pressure or anything. So if I have any spare time for the next several weeks, I need to have my nose buried in my French notes. *insert expletives here* The joys of working for the government of a bilingual country.
I was trying to figure out what post I could do relatively quickly, and realized I had some photos saved of “wood walls” – inspiration for my house when it finally gets renovated (on that note, we’re now considering tearing it down and rebuilding, which has thrown me for a loop, as that was never the plan when I bought this house). I want a rustic touch to the place, and what better way than a wall covered in wood slats…or maybe panels, but I’m leaning towards slats. Here are some photos with walls of wood that I really like. (See also this post on wood panelling)

Reader request – exposed brick

15 Jul

Today’s reader request comes from Erick: I wanted to know if you could help me find ideas for designing/decorating an apartment with exposed brick wall. I think I’d like to see more of a modern take rather then a rustic one. I’m open to the industrial look also. Jo and I are HUGE fans of exposed brick. H U G E. And I think exposed brick works with any type of decor. Smooth and sleek modern furnishings add an interesting contrast to the rough and raw edge of brick walls. And industrial mixed with brick just makes total sense. WORK IT ERICK!

Chair porn

10 Jul

It’s been ages since I’ve done a chair porn post. I have a chair fetish you see, and have a hard time not bringing home a cool chair every now and then. And because I’m feeling a bit guilty for not having blogged last Sunday and wanting to spend the evening with my husband off the computer for a change, I thought I’d just slap up some chair porn for your viewing pleasure.

Reader request – kitchen islands with no sink/stove

24 Jun

Here is a reader request from Monika: I’m about a year away from a major kitchen/family room remodel and our architect is recommending we have a large island that would stand alone without a sink or stove. The sink and stove will be on the wall opposite the island. I love the idea of a large open space with no sink/stove paraphernalia to clutter it up, but I haven’t seen an example of this in real life and would like to see a few examples before I give the go ahead… my mother in particular is skeptical siting the importance of the “work triangle” while I feel a large clutter free expanse creating a sense of calm & cleanliness trumps the triangle. If you find examples of large islands with no sink/stove, I would love to see them. I am absolutely with you Monika. Plus, with the main sink in the island, you’ll always have a pile of dishes there. Who wants to see that so clearly?

Color Punch!

13 Jun

Lately I have been seeing interiors (& fashion!) that are infused with punches of bright, bold colors – loving these bright and cheery colors!

And if you don’t want to go bold on the wall, consider a punch of color with accessories, like this purple area rug.

Even the Victoria’s Secret models look hot in bright colors!

Modern Tripod Floor Lamp gets restyled – Fortuny Giudecca 805 by Pallucco

8 Apr

A popular modern tripod floor lamp gets a makeover with some chic new threads – new lampshade materials, that is. Now featuring long fiber Egyptian cotton, the Fortuny Giudecca 805 floor lamp by Pallucco has been restyled and revived. The design by Mariano Fortuny boasts the signature tripod base with an umbrella-style shade, which can be raised, dropped and rotated for different looks and lighting effects. The shades some clad in fabulous new fabrics to splash up the style at home, boasting patterns that run the gamut from subtle to bold. This floor fixture looks great in living rooms, bedrooms and even in the dining room, thanks to its soft, romantic light. Check out this new and improved, tripod lamp at Pallucco.

Reader requests – what to do with a television

27 Jan

I have gotten a few reader requests lately having to do with televisions and how to decorate around them and make them less of an eye-sore. There are all sorts of ideas below – hide it within built-in shelving, wallpaper the wall behind it (or paint it black), place it on top of a hot pink credenza as a distraction, hang art around it (like I did)…..and at the end of the post is an example of what NOT TO DO.
