Luxury Beachside Vicino House in SoCal Earns LEED Platinum

Overlooking the bluffs of Pacific Palisades, California, the ultra-sustainable Vicino House features 180-degree views of both the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Monica Bay. The original house, built in the mid 1950’s, was gutted and rehabilitated into a LEED platinum marvel. Additional square footage was added to the final design, which incorporates a remarkable range of sustainable and energy-efficient systems and materials.

Charming Sustainable Home in Washington With an Inviting Interior Design

The Hill House was designed by David Coleman Architecture and is located in Winthrop, Washington. According to the architects, the project is composed of a 20′ wide x 115′ long stepped platform, a shelter formed by the roof and east wall, and several gabion stone walls. It is sited on a long, narrow, rocky hillside, sloping gently to the south and steeply to the east and west. The building reads and lives like a habitable landscape, adapting to the changing seasons and needs of its occupants. Sustainable materials, technologies and techniques are used throughout. Recycled steel, sustainably harvested wood, BIBS insulation in oversized wall and ceiling cavities, on-demand hot water, low-flow fixtures and convection heat are just a few of the strategies employed. In short, this is a modest, sustainable building with a big presence in a big landscape. We were truly impressed by this home’s flawless interior design and the overall warmth it inspires. When UK-based architecture firm Stride Treglown sat down to design their own office, they took on the challenge of creating the most sustainable building they could afford. The result is the earliest pre-emptive BREEAM Outstanding award conferred for any building. The prefabricated building features an efficient envelope that encourages a well-balanced synthesis of natural light and ventilation. A biomass boiler, green roof and solar panels help propel the design into the elite class of buildings that consume net zero energy.
