High-Flying Solar Robots Designed to Soar Above Dubai

30 Aug

2010 Land Art Generator Initiative Design Competition, dubai, Carlos Campos Yamila Zynda Aiub Architects robot, robotic bird, solar power, solar powered robots, flying robots, wing, choreographies in the sky, green design, eco design, sustainable design

Soaring like robotic birds, these energy generating flying devices were conceived by Carlos Campos Yamila Zynda Aiub Architects for the skies of Dubai. Called Wings, the curious “creatures” use solar cells to store energy, which they then use to illuminate the land below them at night in a flutter of constellation-like formations.

Modern Mexican School Keeps Cool with Sun-Shading Skin

30 Aug

cool building, sustainable school design,,offset facade, Docet Institute, stación-ARquitectura Arquitectos, Mexico green building, Monetary green school,

The new Docet Institute is a preschool in Monterey, Mexico that was designed with a sensitive eye toward children’s needs, energy requirements, and the wooded downtown property it is sited on. The interior is spacious and light-filled, and it wraps around to preserve a natural area with mature trees. The architects at Stación-ARquitectura Arquitectos took the brilliant step of wrapping the school in a breathable metal skin to reduce heat gain, which in turn substantially lowers operating costs for the school in the balmy Mexican climate.

LEED Platinum House With a Brilliant Modernist Design

27 Aug

Green Modernest design, Racine Wisconsin home, OS House, Johnsen Schmaling Architects, LEED Platinum house, Green home,

LEED Platinum certification and a modernist appeal make this house a prime example of how sustainable design can be so potent. The OS House was featured in the New York Times for its capricious façade and sustainable amendments that stand out in a very staid neighborhood. Located on Lake Superior in Racine, Wisconsin the design by Johnsen Schmaling Architects is a striking and playful fusion of green tech– like ground source heating and solar thermal and electricity– with great light, views and skillful construction.

INTERVIEW: Architect James Corner On NYC’s High Line Park

24 Aug

Click here to view the embedded video.

The High Line urban park project in New York City opened last summer to tremendous excitement from locals and tourists alike looking to escape the bustling streets for a more peaceful, green enclave in the sky. NYC’s High Line is a project that exemplifies effective adaptive urban re-use in a city that is littered with structures and spaces that have since reached the end of their useful life. By turning an abandoned, elevated freight train track into a public park, this project has redefined the New York experience, affording never-before seen views of the city’s surrounding natural landscape as well as an expansive and intimate look into one of the world’s most dynamic urban environments. With the completion of the rest of the High Line currently in the works, we couldn’t think of a better time to catch up with one of the brilliant minds behind the design of this beautiful public space. I recently sat down with landscape designer James Corner, the lead designer behind the High Line, to get his personal perspective on the what it was like to take an abandoned train track and turn it into one of NYC’s best loved spots of greenery. Read on for my exclusive interview with James Corner below…
