Contemporary University Design: Ravensbourne College Building in London

27 Mar

http://interiordesignsense.com/tag//

The digital media and design section of Ravensbourne College in London can now take pride in their new college building. The project below was completed by Foreign Office Architects in order to meet the shifting demands of 21st century learners. Here is more from the project developers: “The architecture of the building has been designed to express the culture of contemporary production, by using a non-periodic tiling system which symbolises a more diverse and contemporary approach to technology. Gothic rose windows and flower patterns have also been a rich field of inspiration for the project, but in this building they will not be produced as an imitation of nature but as an abstract construction. To achieve this we have resorted to the use of a non-periodic tiling pattern on the façade, which allowed us to build seven different types of windows out of only three different tiles.” Freshome readers, what is your choice-’  traditional or contemporary university building designs?

John Kestner’s ‘Tableau’ Is A Photo Scanner

28 Dec

Whoever said “never judge a book from its cover” was a wise man and in this case never judge a table from its exterior facade. It is not unusual to mistake John Kestner’s ‘Tableau’ as an antique piece of furniture though thats so far from the truth. In fact ‘Tableau’ is all about technology since it is a photo scanner disguised as a table. Closing in the gap between physical and digital media, the table scans and posts photographs that have been placed inside the drawer to social networking sites like twitter! Made foam reclaimed materials and discarded electronics, ‘Tableau’ is seeking to revolutionize our approach towards technology and consumer electronics.

Smeg FP 610 Series Pyrolitic Oven Series

15 Oct

When it comes to designing modish and rather quirky home appliances no one does a better job than Italian company Smeg. Known for brainstorming with leading architects to create domestic appliances that usually border on the retro, Smeg’s appliances embody post war american design. Marc Newson’s FP 610 Series Pyrolitic Ovens for Smeg also plays with the past but stays rooted in the present. The oven is available in vibrant colors like yellow, green etc but those who prefer something subdued can opt for the rather staid steel, black and white. However what truly makes the oven special is it Pyrolitic technology which uses e pyrolytic decomposition (extreme heat) to oxidize dirt and its ultra chic touch sensitive buttons.

The Living Kitchen Probably Knows What You’re Thinking

11 Oct

When looking at the images below you’ll think I’m showing you a concept kitchen that’s light years away from becoming an actual product but a Living Kitchen might be closer than you think. The Living Kitchen in the images below is supposedly uses a technology called claytronics. The material contains millions of small robots that are able to stick and communicate with each other. That means the owner of such a Living Kitchen would be able to play with the material as she or he sees fit. Create shapes out of such a wall and then transform them into sinks, cutting boards, strange cutting devices, and even plates, which can be cut out and taken with you around the house. Would you get yourself such a Living Kitchen? Via Michael Harboun
