Mercedes and cute are two words that are rarely used in combination, but there’s no denying the cute factor in Mohammad Ghezel’s Mercedes ELA concept for the 2011 Michelin Challenge Design Showcase. The ELA’s lightweight but structurally sound body reflects what could be the future look of HOVs to come. In contrast with it’s bee-like exoskeleton, the interior is intimate for both passenger and driver.

Move over Metro. Introducing the EOL maglev train concept. Magnetic levitation replaces mechanical components to launch this aerodynamic choo-choo to speeds exceeding 480 kilometers per hour; all while you relax or work from the comfort of your personal business class cabin in absolute silence. Though it’s optimized for long distance travel; I’d sacrifice my long-time chauffeur fantasy for making the daily commute on the EOL in a heartbeat.The solar paneled roof and magnetic technology make the train more cost-effective and energy efficient than any existing railroad system. Not to mention, it’s functional and customizable yet polished and minimal interior is just plain hot.

Rain, snow, and cold weather can be incredibly discouraging for even the most serious biking enthusiasts. Inflatable Fairing was designed with this in mind. The inflatable lightweight shield provides temporary armor against the elements and can quickly be deflated and tucked away in a small protective casing attached to the bike. This is a serious solution for all those cycling addicts out there.

Check out this polarizing coffee table called Crucifixion. The inspiration came from religion, aesthetics and geometry – complimenting each other  to create this stainless steel and polycarbonate figure. It looks almost alien. Quite austere but in a way that makes you stare. The aerial shot is gorgeous. Great proportions.

5% annual growth of global commercial air passenger traffic means more people in an airport terminal at one time. The AEROS  project looks to improve seating efficiency by tackling personal space issues through the use of table and seating arrangements. Current tandem seating is ineffective. People tend to avoid sitting next to strangers. In some cases bags are put on top of seats intentionally to create a barrier.

The layout proposes an alternating 1 : 2 seating arrangement with tables in between. You gain more seating capacity and provide more utilitarian space for passengers. Thin metal sheets with thin high density foam form the streamline feel to the chair. Neutrals are used in order to blend well with most airports while the plywood is used to bring warmth to these pedestrian spaces.

The Writable is a fun and interactive look at how we can spark up the conversation around the coffee table. Three flip panels at the centre house chalkboards on the underside with a chalk discreetly held in place. I love the way it changes the outlook of a simple structure to something more eloquent. Definitely a conversation starter!
