Environmentally Friendly for the Audiophile

9 Feb

The Ashcraft Aria headphones are a combination of recycled materials and advanced audio technology designed with the audiophile in mind. The headband is wrapped in wood recycled from acoustic guitars. The satin spun finished ear cups are made from reclaimed aluminum. The quilted leather surrounding the ear cups and lining come from reclaimed from bags, jackets and other articles of clothing. Sound is driven by 40 millimeter titanium-plated drivers tuned to deliver extreme clarity, true to the musician’s intention.

Edible Dishes

8 Feb

The following project is one with far fewer hard specs than it has big notions about how the future could be. This project is not a stack of dishes, nay, it is a dish creator. This “Piece of Plate” creator is responsible for the creation of the places where your main course meal will be sitting. Each plate produced will be edible in some way or another, it being organic and made of bio-degradable bits of our mother earth. I cannot speak for its taste.

Last time I had an edible piece of what’s normally porcelain or something similar, it was a bread bowl at the Renaissance fair. Beer cheese soup in a big fat bread bowl? There is nothing better. And now you’re telling me I can have lasagna on an edible plate? This must be love.

Chair of Suggestion

7 Feb

The following, if I’d not pixelated the first photo, would be considered NSFW. Every once in a while here at Yanko Design we’re submitted a project that is so very adult in nature that we cannot post it in full lest our supporters all bail ship and call us design heretics. Furthermore, this is a PG-13 blog at its most scandalous. That said, the project contained in this post is called Adela [Erotic Chair]. It’s made of fiberglass, polyurethane, and vinyl plastic. The designer is Andres Amaya, and I’ll leave the many uses for the chair to you.

Bird of Limb Enhancement

7 Feb

Let’s take a dip for a moment into the world of fashion in a very general way. We don’t often cover fashionable items here on Yanko Design because more often than not industrial design ends up being about as far from the clothing and decoration world as it gets. On the other hand, every once in a while something spectacular comes along and we just can’t help ourselves.

Take a peek here at the “Vibba” bracelet by Xanath Lammoglia, a designer / artist who brings not only a bit of jewelry to accent the most beautiful of ensembles, but a sculptural piece of art that looks amazing sitting all by itself.

Resourceful and Giving Tree

4 Feb

What we generally see at airport lounges or public spaces are very drab looking charging stations for cellphones. A very artistic and pleasing way to provide the same service is the Giving Tree. The green cords (hopefully retractable) can be pulled out to reach the phone, rather than the other way around. I say it’s artistic enough to be placed at home as well, what do you think?

Ergonomic Strap

3 Feb

The Split Strap is designed and developed with maximum ergonomics and comfort in mind. After studying how straps interact with the structures of the shoulder, neck and back, designer Benjamin Wong discovered that the planar/flat profiled nature of existing straps did not contour to the body well causing unequal weight/force distribution, discomfort and possible strain. The design utilizes a split in the strap which creates multiple points where the strap can sit and conform to the body -distributing weight evenly and increasing comfort. Gimme!

If BMW Designed Rails

3 Feb

The Siemens group commissioned BWM’s subsidiary Designworks USA to develop a sprawling metro railway for Los Angeles, Munich and Singapore. Aptly called the Metro Inspiro, the design is meant to make all facets of public transport in a train easier. Innovative door-lit graphics, iconography to indicate status and time, and the tree referenced hand rails for passengers of all heights intimate a more user-friendly train.

The interior has a warm, almost organic feel. Materials like cork, rich woods and adaptive lighting make the Inspiro one of the most comfortable and eco-friendly trains to ride. Good news is Siemens just received an order for one in Poland. Not sure when construction starts but I’m already anxious to ride it.

Our buddy Dean Heckler of his eponymous Heckler Design has something new up his sleeve called OneLessDrop. It’s a simple, elegant solution to cable management. A New Kind of Aluminum Can

2 Feb

106,000 aluminum cans are discarded every 30 seconds in the United States. Efforts to recycle the mounting heaps have met with mild success so Haoshi Studio in cooperation with PLA Studio have created a new kind of can called TIN CAN. It’s made of PLA yet it’s fully insulated and can be heated up to 110ºF. It even squishes like an aluminum can except it’s 100% organic and biodegradable.
