Good Things in Small Packages

8 Jul

Y’all know I love the Bluelounge CableBox but if that was a little too big and colorless for ya, check out the new CableBox Mini. As the name suggests, it’s a miniature version but in 6 different colors; blue, green yellow, orange, pink and of course white. For $29.95, you get the Mini and a 4-socket surge protector (U.S. customers only). This one will fit quite nicely behind my entertainment center.

Spindle Ball Alarms!

8 Jul

Some designers want you to stand up to wake up, others want you to stretch but Pedro Gomes wants you to play with the toy-like Sleepy Alarm Clock! Spin the spoodle and it allows you to sleep for a wee bit longer. Overall a cute design that will fit perfectly in the children’s room. What I dig the most is the fun, interactive way we can change the time by simply moving the ball back and forth.

Beer Pyramid

7 Jul

Inspired by the brass monkey used on ships to stack cannonballs is this flexible rubber mat called the Fridge Monkey. It’s designed with ridges to hold beverage bottles and cans into place, so that you can build a steady pyramid out of them. The clever little design works well with almost any bottled or canned drink. The only problem I foresee is that homes like mine don’t allow for bottles to be in the fridge for so long, they get consumed as soon as they are bought! So building bottles pyramids is out of the question.

I’m Rich With Memo Money

7 Jul

Fake Dollar bills are commonplace and illegal, but if you’re looking at playing pretend ‘I’m a Rich Korean’, then Money Memo is for you. Nothing earth-shattering about the concept, except that you get to show-off wads of Korean Won, albeit a note-pad version. Stash some in your pocket or wallet for handy note-takings (pun intended)!

Eat Where You Please

6 Jul

Recent design graduate Khatija Aslam knows the student life pretty well, especially the mealtimes! Living in dorms, the uninviting cafeteria and the lack of time to actually grab a bite…she’s been there, done that; hence this project! The Dine Away is a lunch box concept that allows you to pack in food and carry it to your comfort place to dine in peace. It’s got everything planned, right from the flatware to the mats. I know some of you could really do with this compact box.

Two Quarters Of A Bike

6 Jul

TwoQuater is a power-assisted electric bicycle that folds up when necessary. It sources the power from a lithium battery, which housed at the back of the bike in a black case. The power-assist comes into play when riding uphill and during the downhill course it recharges the battery. For a subway ride or up the elevator, the bike folds into half, but if you need to stash it in your car’s trunk or stow it away, it can fold up further to become a quarter of its size.

Usually when we try to fold a traditional folding cycle, we have to fold its handle bar and saddle separately. But with the TwoQuarter, we can fold the both these parts at the same time. Besides, the single front fork and rear fork make it much thinner and smaller after folded.

I almost forgot, you can remove the battery from the black housing and plug it up like regular ones, for recharging.

Beetle Juice Inspired!

5 Jul

The onymacris unguicularis is a beetle found in the Namibian desert and has the most unique way of procuring water. Early in the morning, when the dew enriched fog is settled over the dunes, the beetle goes to the peak and positions its body in such a way that it helps in dew formation, and slurps up the water thus formed. Using this technique is the Dew Bank Bottle. It’s made is such a way that the steel body helps to assimilate the morning dew and channel it into the bottle immediately. Ideal for the nomads in the desert!

Be sure to watch the BBC clip at the end of the post, which explains this ingenious tactic.

It’s Zip Up Time

11 May

The Zipper Bracelet Watch is just that, of course there is no watch face; otherwise why would it be here on YD! This concept is a wide leather bracelet where the zips actually display the current time when you hit the central buttons on the wrist. Each zip displays a digit, which you are supposed to combine together to read the time. Sounds confusing right now, but hit the jump to see what I mean. Definitely easier than a Tokyo Flash!

Extended Life Of A Toilet Paper Core

10 May

Do you really care about your toilet paper? Is its lifecycle really worth a mention? Do we want to discuss toilet-habits on YD? So many questions…and there is only one answer for this… “Day Re”! The deal is that once you’re done with the tissue part of the toilet paper roll, you toss the brown core into the trash, right? However if you buy a Day Re toilet roll…you just extended its life and purpose on earth! The core comes with a sticker tab that unfolds to a memo pad. Good enough to take daily or weekly notes! Question is; do we want toilet paper to be like a coconut tree and use every bit of it? Or do we just want some soft tissues to wipe our bums clean, and that’s the end of its story! You decide.
